Scientists Propose Turning Carbon Pollution Into Baking Soda and Storing it In Oceans
Scientists have set out a way to suck planet-heating carbon pollution from the air, turn it into sodium bicarbonate and store it in oceans, according to a new paper. The technique could be up to three times more efficient than current carbon capture technology, say the authors of the study, published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances….
The team have used copper to modify the absorbent material used in direct air capture. The result is an absorbent “which can remove CO2 from the atmosphere at ultra-dilute concentration at a capacity which is two to three times greater than existing absorbents,” Arup SenGupta, a professor at Lehigh University and a study author, told CNN. This material can be produced easily and cheaply and would help drive down the costs of direct air capture, he added. Once the carbon dioxide is captured, it can then be turned into sodium bicarbonate — baking soda — using seawater and released into the ocean at a small concentration.
The oceans “are infinite sinks,” SenGupta said. “If you put all the CO2 from the atmosphere, emitted every day — or every year — into the ocean, the increase in concentration would be very, very minor,” he said. SenGupta’s idea is that direct air capture plants can be located offshore, giving them access to abundant amounts of seawater for the process.
Stuart Haszeldine, professor of carbon capture and storage at the University of Edinburgh, who was not involved in the study, told CNN that the chemistry was “novel and elegant.” The process is a modification of one we already know, he said, “which is easier to understand, scale-up and develop than something totally new.”

New On Peacock In December 2022: The Real Housewives Of Miami Season 5, Baking It Season 2, The Goonies
It’s almost Turkey Day, and December is right around the corner. A new month also means a whole bunch of new shows and movies to watch on Peacock. Some of that content will be available on December 1, while other shows and movies will be available a little later next month.
Peacock isn’t exactly going hard in the paint with original content in December, but there are still some good selections, provided you’re in the right mood. For example, The Real Housewives of Miami are back for Season 5 on December 8, and those words alone will tell you whether you’re interested or not. According to a synopsis, Season 5 will be “muy caliente” with “new alliances, loyalty, and relationships on the line.” If it’s your favorite guilty pleasure, you’ll have plenty of time to retreat from friends and family and stay current with the new season.
On December 12, Saturday Night Live alums Andy Samberg and Maya Rudolph return for Season 2 of Baking It. This time out, the Peacock show is a competition inspired by the holiday season, where teams of home bakers create delicious festive treats to win a $50,000 prize and the title of “Best in Dough.”

I’m a baking expert – how the color of your pans can affect how well your cakes and cookies come out
A BAKING expert has revealed how the color of a pan affects the color of freshly baked cakes.
The TikToker’s secret has shocked the internet and made viewers of his video rethink the way they bake.
@benjaminthebaker on TikTok shared a secret on how to get the perfect type of cake by using different colored pans[/caption]
Lighter-colored pans conduct heat much less, so they are better for cakes with softer edges, Benjamin said[/caption]
Benjamin, known on TikTok simply as @benjaminthebaker, regularly shares his baking expertise via the social media platform.
“Whether its cookies, cakes, or brownies, the type of pan you use has a big impact on how your desserts bake,” he began his video on pan color.
“Cookies baked on a dark tray will have a more crispy edge, and the bottom will brown more than those baked on a light tray,” he explained.
When it comes to cakes, the baking expert explained that, because darker-colored metal conducts heat more rapidly than its lighter-shade counterpart, the bottom of the cake will be darker.

This also explains why the edges of a cake baked in a darker pan will finish more rapidly.
The result is a “shorter cake with a more rounded top and a thick crust,” according to the baking expert.
Brownies that are baked in a dark pan make for edges that cook very fast, “before the middle has a chance to catch up.
If you prefer brownies with a harder edge, Benjamin said, this is perfect.

To bake your brownie batter into a treat with a softer perimeter, a lighter pan should be used.
For one commenter, the choice to use a darker pan came down to aesthetics.
“Well damn I just like the look of dark trays better,” they said.
Another viewer wondered why they didn’t come to this conclusion on their own, saying, “This is so obvious after it is explained, and I never ever thought about it before said explanation.”
A third TikTok user didn’t need Benjamin’s advice, as they were not looking to change the finished product of their baked goods.
They said: “Well, I like crispy edges.”
