The singer also poked fun at the American pronunciation of St Patrick’s Day, saying: “Happy Paddy’s Day, and for all the Americans here that’s with two Ds not two Ts.”
Opening his set in the East Room, the One Direction star said: “Thank you very much for having me here.
“As a proud Irishman who travels the world it is a major honour for me to be here so thank you very much for putting me up to it.
“There’s a lot of very talented Irish singers out there, so to be chosen to represent your country on the grandest of stages is a real honour, so thanks very much.”
Niall started by singing his new single Heaven before singing Flicker and This Town.

MEGHAN Markle has cast her vote in the US midterm elections, proudly sharing an image of herself with an ‘I voted’ sticker.
The Duchess of Sussex posted the image on the website of her and Prince Harry’s Archewell foundation.

The 41-year-old is seen smiling as she wears a casual beige sweater, denim jeans, blue jacket and a baseball cap with the Archewell logo.
The picture came with a statement entitled “Vote” which encouraged Americans to cast their ballots.
“Today is Election Day in the US! Time to get out and vote!” the message said.
The statement went on to share a handful of tips for those voting in person, like confirming polling location, bringing the right ID and reviewing what’s on the ballot.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also shared a text service number, which claims to help find polling locations and other information for voters.
“Text ARCHEWELL to 26797 to find your polling location and make sure you are ready to vote,” they said.
Back in 2020, Meghan reportedly became the first royal to vote in a US presidential election after casting an early mail ballot.

“Meghan was an American long before she was a royal,” an insider told Page Six.

Centuries-old tradition dictates that members of the British monarchy remain politically neutral, and so voluntarily refrain from casting votes.
Prince Harry isn’t a US citizen and so can’t vote.
It is unknown who Meghan voted for, but she has hinted in the past that she is not a fan of Donald Trump.
It comes as she Markle has appeared to hit back at her “Duchess Difficult” label – slamming it as a “codeword for b***h”.

Later in the episode she also laughingly admitted she needs to “up her game” in raising Archie and Lilibet with Prince Harry.
