WhatsApp to Let Users Transfer Chats to Another iPhone Without Using iCloud
Currently, WhatsApp only lets iPhone users migrate their chat history and media to another iPhone if they have created a Chat Backup which is uploaded to iCloud.
With the new feature, called “Transfer Chats to iPhone,” users need only download WhatsApp on their new phone, register with the same number, and then use their old iPhone to scan a QR code shown on the new device to automatically transfer their chat history.
As noted by WaBetaInfo, the new built-in service offers a significant advantage to users limited to iCloud’s 5GB of free storage who do not have the space available to back up their chat history on Apple’s servers.
The new chat transfer feature is currently available to some beta testers who have installed the latest version of WhatsApp beta for iOS from the TestFlight app. It is expected to roll out to even more people over the coming days, but it’s not clear when the feature will appear for regular WhatsApp users.
News of the feature in testing follows parent company Meta’s announcement last week that it is rolling out multi-device login support for more than one phone. The change means users will be able to log into the same WhatsApp account on up to four phones, instead of being limited to just one phone and multiple desktop devices.
With the new feature, said to be rolling out to all users within the coming weeks, users’ messages will be synced across multiple devices including other phones. So even if one device is switched off, they can access the app on other devices.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns was originally going to have loads more story chats in it
Marvel’s Midnight Suns may be a turn-based tactics game first and foremost, but it also has a substantial RPG element that drives both the story and the interpersonal dramas of its superhero teams between missions. When you and your squad head back to your Abbey HQ, there are side stories and quests to investigate around the Abbey grounds, items to find, and more. It’s a sizable part of the game, but at one point it was even bigger, creative director Jake Solomon tells me at GDC.
“It’s crazy, if you go online, you can see all the Midnight Suns cutscenes and they’re three hours long. That’s as long as a movie,” he says. But during the last year of development Solomon reveals “we cut 30 conversations from the game, like 30 scenes. We cut a ton, because we realised this is just simply too much.”

Microsoft Teams adds Snapchat AR Lenses to video chats
Microsoft and Snap have teamed up to bring Snapchat Lenses to Teams. The next time you hop onto a call with colleagues or friends, you’ll be able to pick from one of 26 popular Lenses to add some visual flair to your video chats. You’ll be able to turn yourself into a cartoon character, add virtual snow and slap a variety of backgrounds onto your webcam feed. That said, it’s probably best to make sure you don’t accidentally leave a Lens on during more serious conversations.
Snap and Microsoft say the library of Lenses will rotate to keep things fresh. You can switch on a Lens in Teams by selecting the Video Effects option, then Snapchat. The Lenses will slowly roll out to everyone starting today. Most users should have access to them in Teams in the coming days.
The companies tapped into Snap’s Camera Kit (a software development kit) to bring the latter’s augmented reality tech to Teams. Microsoft previously used Camera Kit to add Snap’s AR features to its video learning platform, Flip, where educators try to kickstart video discussions among students by providing them with prompts. According to Snap, since Microsoft added the integration to Flip, teachers and students have been 60 percent more likely to post videos to the platform.
Snap used to have its own desktop app that enabled folks to use Lenses on third-party video calling services. However, the company shut down the app, Snap Camera, earlier this year.

Google Defends Auto-Deletion of Chats After US Alleged It Destroyed Evidence
Google said the government plaintiffs “contend that the Federal Rules specifically mandate that Google should have applied a forced history on setting for all custodians for all chats created while the custodian was on legal hold, regardless of the possible relevance of the message to the litigation.” But federal rules only require “reasonable steps to preserve” information, Google pointed out. “Google’s vast preservation efforts here — and specifically its methodology with respect to history-off chats — were ‘reasonable steps’ under the Rule,” Google argued. Google said the US and state attorneys general “have not been denied access to material information needed to prosecute these cases and they have offered no evidence that Google intentionally destroyed such evidence.” Google also argued that the objections came too late, alleging that the government knew before litigation began “that there was a subset of chats not automatically retained.” “Plaintiffs’ motions are barred at the outset because they were on notice of Google’s approach to chats for years, yet did not object until well after the close of discovery. Those tactics should not be countenanced,” Google told the court.
Google said its November 2019 disclosures in an ESI (Electronically Stored Information) questionnaire “show that the distinction between ‘on-the-record’ and other chats was apparent to anyone who wanted to pursue the matter from the outset of DOJ’s investigation. For instance, the ESI Questionnaire response specifies that chat ‘messages are generally retained for a period of 30 days if they have been marked on-the-record, and potentially longer if on-the-record messages are on legal hold.'” Google also said, “it is no secret how Google’s Chat product operates” because it’s a publicly available product and the Google Chat website explains the history-off feature. The Justice Department’s motion last month said things happened very differently. “Google systematically destroyed an entire category of written communications every 24 hours” for nearly four years, the government motion said, continuing […].
