Minecraft Legends review: a cute kid-friendly strategy adventure, but missing the series’ magic
Sometimes the top-line pitch for a game is better than the actual finished product. Such is the case for Minecraft Legends, the latest spin-off intended to offer a different sort of gaming experience within the framework of the legendary survival franchise.
At preview, I was really impressed by Legends. After a successful jaunt into the RPG genre with ideal ‘my first dungeon crawler’ fodder Minecraft Dungeons, this title pitched the same again but for strategy titles. I like Minecraft, and I love strategy games, a genre that I feel is woefully under-served. Despite this, I’ve struggled to maintain interest in Minecraft Legends – and a lot of it is arguably down to simplicity.
As with Dungeons, the goal here is clearly to create something accessible and palatable to as wide an audience as possible. Minecraft is beloved by many very young children, and so any Minecraft game needs to have a sufficiently low barrier for entry. The bar is set low by Legends – but the game’s structure also doesn’t offer enough above and beyond that bar – which leads to an experience that feels brimming with potential, but lacking in its execution.

Lil’ Guardsman remixes Papers, Please in a cute deduction adventure
Last night ID@Xbox held their latest showcase to spotlight all sorts of indies. One of the highlights was the cute deduction game Lil’ Guardsman, a riff on Papers, Please where you work on a guard post, choosing to accept or refuse entry for fantasy folk wanting to get into the city. Or you can just jail them. It looks like lighthearted fun, and it’ll be hitting PC and consoles later this year.

Wildfrost review: cute, compelling, and chaotic card battling
Wildfrost is excellent at creating moments of triumph. Early on in my playthrough while I was still getting to grips with the game, I came face-to-face with a boss who got stronger when hit. Its card art had become bigger, juicier, more tauntingly malevolent, and easily could have taken out any of my team with a single hit. Thankfully, three of my team members were due to act one turn before it. The first chipped away a little of its health (its job was mostly healing) but the next doubled a stacked debuff that I had set up and turned the goliath into a giant bomb, and the effect of my two cards combined was just enough to trigger it. BOOM! My backline leader didn’t even need to lift a single finger.
Playing with turn order and setting up synergies is a key part of how Wildfrost plays as a roguelike deck builder. Each individual card on the stage is part of a counter system, with both delaying and advancing them on the playing field being strategic choices. Some actions are free, like moving your cards around the stage or withdrawing them for healing, but playing cards out of your hand or shuffling your deck will pass the turn.
EastEnders’ Jessie Wallace, 51, looks a world away from Kat Slater with ‘cute’ short hair and glasses after makeover
EASTENDERS’ Kat Slater star Jessie Wallace has a brand new look – and there’s not even a whiff of leopardprint.
The 51-year-old looks almost unrecognisable compared to her character after a major makeover.
She looked very different in a selfie showing off her new short hair[/caption]
Jessie posted a picture of her with a much shorter haircut and glasses in a simple black T-shirt.
EastEnders fans were bowled over, with one writing: “I love your new haircut and glasses! You look great!”
Another said: “Wow your hair really suits you and actually ,akes you look younger” while several called it “cute”.
Another asked Jessie, referring to her co-star Letitia Dean: “Are you and Shazza Watts drinking a magic potion? How do you stay so youthful and gorgeous?”
The actress credited her acclaimed hairdresser Lino Carbosiero, 58, for the cut in the caption on Instagram referring to him as “the scissorhands magician”.
She added that her black and white Nimmo top was a tribute to the electronic music group. Jessie wrote: “Rocking my new T-shirt from the coolest band.”
One fan joked, referring to the decades of heartache and drama Kat has endured on EastEnders: “You look marvellous for all the stress your character carries!”
The Sun revealed last month that Jessie and carpenter boyfriend Justin Gallwey, 50, are getting married after at least a year together.
Pals said the actress would be inviting her friends on the BBC soap, including Alfie Moon star Shane Ritchie.
A source said: “Jessie is over the moon about her engagement and is starting to put plans in place for her wedding.”
Jessie has had a string of boyfriends over the years but never been married.
She was set to get hitched at a £300,000 star-studded ceremony in 2011 to fiance Vincent Morse before it was called off at the last minute.
But she is said to have told pals she is ready to settle down with Justin and marry. A source explained: “Jessie has been proudly wearing the ring.”
