I pumped a Russian soldier full of lead after he killed my comrade, says Brit fighting for Ukraine in BBC doc
A BRIT fighting behind enemy lines in Ukraine says he pumped a Russian soldier full of lead at close range.
Civilian James Dee said only seconds earlier, the enemy had killed his medic pal Craig Mackintosh, 48, in a surprise attack.
Recalling the deadly encounter in the eastern city of Kharkiv, James told the BBC the Russian was only “10 metres away” when he opened fire.
The volunteer fighter, who had no previous military experience, revealed: “One of my friends was digging a trench and I was sitting on the edge.
“You know when you get that feeling someone’s behind you, I looked behind me, surely enough, there was someone there.
“He was only 10m away from me, looking all confused.”
James said he saw the attackers “face change” before he made eye contact “with me”.
The Brit screamed “put your gun down” but in a flash the enemy dropped to the floor, opened fire and a frantic firefight exploded.
James unloaded six shots into the attacker, killing him, but it was too late.
Craig, a landscape gardener from Thetford, in Norfolk, who had joined volunteers in August, was dead.
It is believed he was hit in the neck.
Recalling the aftermath, James said: “I looked down and I’ll be honest, I cried. Not because I was scared.
“But seeing it up close and personal, you’re talking with someone, having a laugh and life’s just gone within the click of the fingers.”
I didn’t find out until the day before he was going… I was gutted
Adrian Macrow, Craig’s brother
Craig had two daughters and two step-daughters and had served in the Territorial Army between the ages of 16 to 23 when he had the ambition of becoming a full time soldier.
But an inoperable cyst near his brain meant he failed a medical examination to join the British Army.
After an accident involving a chainsaw left him in constant pain, he decided to volunteer to join the Ukrainian war effort as a medic, leaving the UK on March 24.
He returned briefly in April for a spell of leave before starting a second tour with a volunteer squad in August.
He died on August 25.
‘CRUSHED’
James’s brutal account was revealed in the documentary ‘Brits in Battle: Ukraine’, availiable on BBC iPlayer.
The show features Craig’s broken family, including brother Adrian Macrow who was “crushed” by Craig’s death.
He said: “I didn’t find out until the day before he was going… I was gutted.
“Even on the way to the airport just anything to get him home, but he had his heart set on it.”
Daughter Kiya Mackintosh said her dad’s August 25 death “didn’t feel real” but she praised him as “courageous” for his actions.
A Google Doc ruined my Age Of Empires II binge
This year, I decided to make a New Year’s Resolution for the first time in my life. I’m 21 and my knees click, which means I must be turning into stone faster than someone having a staring contest with Medusa. So, I vowed to exercise a few times a week. Then, during my first week back at work, vid bud Liam told me to try Age Of Empires II. Never before has a New Year’s Resolution been abandoned so fast. I really wanted to stick with it. Promise.
But! After my first match, the following 30 hours vanished quicker than the Galaxy Caramels in a box of Celebrations. I became obsessed. I mastered AOE II’s low AI difficulties and quickly used the Advanced Techniques tutorial to learn build orders. Before I knew it, I had a Google Doc filled with step-by-step plans for various playstyles, the perfect strategies for any scenario. But that Google Doc ended up ruining everything for me. If that recent Xbox release with the good gamepad controls has you tempted to revisit Age Of Empires II on PC, do not make a Google Doc. You’ve been warned.
Was Lichtenstein a Great Artist or a Rip-Off Artist? A New Doc Investigates
Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein’s work is instantly recognizable: the giant, colorful canvases; the Ben-Day dots; the distinctively comic book-inspired images. That last element has caused controversy over the years, as critics point out “inspired” can sure look a lot like “ripped off.” A new documentary digs in.

Harry & Meg branded ‘irrelevant’ & ‘very troubled couple’, as pair face call to have titles stripped after Netflix doc
PRINCE Harry and Meghan Markle were branded “utterly irrelevant” by a government minister last night – and faced a call to have their royal titles removed.
Harry has been accused of attacking vital institutions in Britain during the controversial documentary, which touches on alleged racism and bigotry in the royal family.
Senior members of the royal family are reported to be saddened by the documentary[/caption]
Guy Opperman has slammed the series, calling the couple “irrelevant”[/caption]
Bob Seeley has suggested stripping the couple of royal titles[/caption]
In the show, Harry was quoted as saying royals have “a huge level of unconscious bias”.
His wife Meghan said the media was set on “destroying” her.
Employment minister Guy Opperman said the couple are “utterly irrelevant” to the progress of the UK and the royal family.
Speaking on BBC Question Time, he said they were a clearly troubled couple, which is a “sad state of affairs”.
He said: “I don’t think it has a fundamental impact on the royal family. I certainly won’t be watching it. I would urge everyone to boycott Netflix and make sure that we actually focus on the things that matter.”
Conservative MP Bob Seely said the prince’s comments on the documentary raised a political issue.
It’s been two years since Harry and Meghan quit working as full-time royals, and Seely plans to bring forward legislation which would take away the couple’s royal titles.
If the proposed legislation passes, MPs would vote on a resolution which would give Privy Council the ability to strip away the couple’s titles.
Mr Seely said: “As well as trashing his family and monetising his misery for public consumption, he is also attacking some important institutions in this country.”
The royal couple have gained an immense amount of wealth from the Netflix series, estimated to be worth £100million.
The fourth, fifth and sixth episodes are due to be released next Thursday.
In the series, the couple slammed the British press, calling stories “salacious” and “planted” leading up to their wedding day.
Harry also spoke about what he called the Windsors’ “unconscious bias”.
Harry said: “In this family, sometimes you are part of the problem rather than part of the solution. There is a huge level of unconscious bias.”
Meghan said she was surprised at the formality of the royal family – even behind closed doors – thought to be a dig at William and Kate.
Prince William is understood to feel “betrayed” after his brother allowed deeply personal attacks on both him and wife Kate to be aired.
Last night the Royal Family were said to be “in a state of sadness” after the couple’s latest barbs — but fear the worst is yet to come.
A senior palace source said Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace and members of the family were not approached for comment on content in the series.

Meghan Markle wears strapless white dress to accept ‘anti-racism’ award with suited Prince Harry ahead of Netflix doc
MEGHAN Markle wore a strapless white dress to receive an award for her and Prince Harry’s stance against “structural racism” in the Royal Family.
The Duchess of Sussex , 41, and Harry, 37, who wore a blue suit, were due to pick up the Ripple of Hope award at a lavish New York ceremony where tables were sold for up to $1million.

Meghan wore an off-the-shoulder white dress by Louis Vuitton, complete with thigh-high slit, after the Princess of Wales wore a similar style of dress design at the Earthshot gala in Boston.
The gown was paired with a black clutch and long gold earrings, while her hair was slicked back into a low bun.
The couple arrived in the rain with Harry holding a brolly over his wife’s head as they made their way into the event.
They then made their appearance in front of photographers with Meghan seen wearing a large blue ring, which appeared to be an emerald-cut aquamarine once owned by Princess Diana.
But Megan and Harry refused to answer questions from assembled journalists as they posed for photos with Kerry Kennedy, John F. Kennedy’s niece.
Earlier the eco-warrior couple arrived in New York after flying in by private jet from their California home.
The award honours “exemplary leaders” who have demonstrated “an unwavering commitment” to social change.
The star studded event was attended by celebrities including Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin.
Asked what he admired about the couple he said: “They way they deal with difficult circumstances in the press without to much difficulty.
“They’ve obviously chosen a different path. Good for them. They’re newly arrived in the States.
“I think it’s great they’ve agreed to support this cause which we have for years.”
The couple we honoured by Kennedy at the annual bash, which is organised by the Robert F Kennedy Human Rights foundation.
It comes after Hours earlier they were mocked over inaccuracies in a trailer for their Netflix docu-series in which Meghan is seen to break down in tears.
Harry and Meghan will join previous winners Joe Biden and former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.
U2 star Bono, Hillary Clinton and Desmond Tutu, who helped to end apartheid in South Africa, have also received the award.
The couple are expected to attend the extravagant gala, where the cheapest ticket will set guests back $2,500.
It comes after Meghan accused an unnamed royal of raising “concerns” about the “skin colour” of her and Harry’s children in her Oprah Winfrey interview.
She declined to reveal the identity of the racist royal as it would be too “damaging” for them.
Ahead of them accepting the award, the couple wheeled out a supporter to claim they had suffered “hatred” and racism.
US businessman Christopher Bouzy, 47, was a little-known tech guru before turning his sights on the royal family last year.
But yesterday he was given a starring role in the streaming giant’s second “official teaser” video.
And in a dramatic intervention, Bouzy told viewers: “It’s about hatred. It’s about race.”
His claims were screened moments after the couple’s lawyer, Jenny Afia, insisted there was “a war against Meghan to suit other people’s agendas”.
The latest salvo against the Royals is likely to fuel demands for Megahan and Harry to be stripped of their Royal titles.
The King and Queen will both be out this week at pre-arranged engagements and vowed not to be distracted from the job, it is understood.
Insiders say the Royals are finding the Netflix row “wearying” coming so soon after the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the King taking on a new role.
