Steam indie RPG turns underrated Final Fantasy game into trash
There are two kinds of Final Fantasy fans: those that have played Final Fantasy Tactics and constantly talk of its brilliance, and those that keep saying they’ll play it eventually. A new indie game on Steam, Trash of the Titans, offers something for both camps that channels the spirit of Tactics, but gives it a trashy spin.
10 More Sci-Fi, Horror, and Fantasy Books to Read Ahead of Their Upcoming Adaptations
Last year, io9 took at look at Hollywood’s upcoming calendar and assembled a reading list of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror books tapped for movie and TV adaptations—some of which, like The Changeling and The Fall of the House of Usher, have since been released. We’re still waiting for others (Dune: Part Two is soon, but …
What do you get when you mix Final Fantasy 7 and Resident Evil? My favourite Steam Next fest demo
Do you ever hear a pitch for a game that immediately perks your ears? A combination of words or ideas that makes you think “well I have to experience this as soon as possible”? That happened to me with Crow Country, the latest title from SFB Games, a developer you’ll probably best know as the team behind the puzzle game Snipperclips. Where Snipperclips is quite cute looking, Crow Country still is, somewhat, but is instead a survival horror game set in an abandoned crow-themed theme park that’s inspired by Final Fantasy 7 and Resident Evil. Yeah, now that’s what I call a good pitch. And the best part is, you can even try it out for yourself thanks to a Steam Next Fest demo. But first, let me sell you on it even more.
Crow Country puts you in the shoes of Special Agent Mara Forest, a mysterious character who’s design quite quickly fits into the history of all time female horror game protagonists. Booting up the demo brings you to the start of the game, and tells you incredibly little – literally just Mara’s name. Everything else is up to you to figure out, and boy do I love a mystery, especially one set in a fictional theme park that shut down due to the strange disappearance of its owner.
Right off the bat, aesthetically, you can see where the Final Fantasy 7 inspirations come in. While maybe ever-so-slightly more defined than the polygonal Cloud, Mara has a similar, toy-like design to her, which I personally think a lot of the OG FF7 character models have. Unlike Final Fantasy 7, and the PS1 era Resident Evils, all of the backgrounds are rendered in real time, as you are able to manoeuvre the camera, but it all retains that pre-rendered feel those classic games excelled at.
Granblue Fantasy: Relink Review – Smooth Sky Sailing
Cygames has been building the Granblue Fantasy series for a decade, first with a mobile gacha-style action-RPG, then with spin-offs ranging from an anime series to a pair of 2D fighting games. Granblue Fantasy: Relink is a return to those RPG roots that attempts to retell the original story to a new audience. For the most part, the game succeeds by trimming the tale into a lean, roughly 20-hour experience, but the transition is not without its stumbles.
Granblue Fantasy: Relink follows The Captain–either Gran (male) or Djeeta (female), depending on your choice–who is the leader of a group of skybound adventurers looking for the island of Estalucia. Captain is linked via life force to Lyria, a girl with the ability to commune with Primal Beasts, who are essentially the gods of the world.
The two travel with a band of warriors, each with backstories that can be explored throughout the game. There are five constant companions: Katalina is Lyria’s sworn protector, Io is the resident mage, Rackam helms the Grandcypher airship, Eugen is a former mercenary turned good guy, and Rosetta is the mysterious femme fatale. You can add more members to the party, but while they can spice up battle plans through new party compositions, they don’t have as much impact on the overall story as the core group.

Don’t expect a Final Fantasy 8 remake after FF7 Remake, director suggests – it’s simply too much work
The director of Final Fantasy 8 has shot down hopes that the next numbered Final Fantasy might see a remake once the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy comes to its conclusion. The reason? Simply that it’s a lot of damn work.
Despite Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth not having a concrete PC release date, it’s just shot right to the top of my 2024 wish list for one hella big reason

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is gunning hard for Yakuza’s mini-game crown
Square Enix showed off 20 more minutes of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth during a special State Of Play stream last night, and holy heck, they sure are bringing it with the mini-games in this one. There’s a whole Gwent-like card game called Queen’s Blood (watch out Triple Triad), dolphin ride obstacle courses, playing with Mooglets, the return of Intergrade’s Fort Condor battles, a strange bit of chicken wrangling, photographing Red XIII, frog jumping… and that’s before we even get to all the stuff at Gold Saucer. Honestly, Like A Dragon better watch out, as Rebirth is clearly making a play for its mini-game crown in this second part of Squeenix’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake project, and man alive, I’m so very here for it.
