Cops confirmed both the young mum-of-four and her partner are believed to have been knifed during the horror attack.
A moving tribute has now been placed at the scene by her kids which read: “To our beautiful mummy. We love you with all of our hearts.”
Surrounded by flowers, the card was signed: “Your four precious babies xxxx.”
A bunch of carnations was also left at the scene with a card saying “for my mummy”.
A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of both murders and remains in custody.
Formal post-mortem examinations are yet to be conducted, but both victims suffered injuries caused by a bladed weapon, police revealed.
In a heart-breaking tragedy, Katie and her new partner were stabbed to death “while her kids were in the house”, according to loved ones.
Katie’s former brother-in-law said yesterday that told how his sibling dated the mum for seven years and was the dad of her oldest two children.
He said the children were “in the property when the incident took place”.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed it has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following prior contact with the “parties involved”.
Tributes have flooded in for mental health nurse Katie, who had four children including a six-month-old baby.
Katie’s former brother and sister in law said the family was “absolutely devastated” as they placed flowers at the scene.
Pals said she had recently starting dating her new partner, Steven Harnett, 25, who was tragically declared dead alongside Katie.
Paying tribute, another friend added: “Katie was one of my best friends.
“She was a brilliant mother and great nurse carer for the mentally ill.
“I’m heartbroken for her and her four kids – the littlest boy is only six months old.”
While one pal wrote: “RIP my gorgeous! You made me laugh when I needed to laugh and you were such amazing mum to the kids and amazing person!
“Don’t know how I’m going to carry on without seeing your kids, having a conversation with you or even our funny dances!!
Soo sorry gorgeous you were taken too soon!!
“Your kids will be looking up at you I promise!! Love you lots missy! And will miss you so much!!
“Rip to the man as well he didn’t deserve it.”
Tributes have also poured in for Steven who had a “heart of gold”.
A friend of the dad said: “RIP Steven I will always make sure your daughter knows who you are.
“You loved her with all your heart and I will always make sure she knows she is daddy’s favourite girl.”
Cops raced to the property on Harpe Inge just before 10am on Monday.
Katie and her boyfriend were found inside with multiple injuries after the “exceptionally serious” attack.
Their deaths sparked a major police manhunt, with armed officers raiding several addresses looking for a suspect.
Detective Superintendent Marc Bowes of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “This has clearly been an exceptionally serious offence and I can promise residents that a full investigation is ongoing into the murder of this man and woman.
“We are conducting extensive enquiries at the scene and at other locations in the Dalton area as we investigate the circumstances of what took place.
“I am appealing for anyone who saw suspicious activity overnight or this morning at the property on Harpe Inge to contact us.
“Residents in the nearby area will also note an increased police presence on their streets and I want to reassure them and the wider community we are doing all we can to bring persons responsible for this offence to justice.”

Photo of Grace, 4, who longed to fly is found hidden on plane with a heartbreaking note eight years after she died
A PHOTO of a little girl who dreamed of flying was discovered on an aeroplane with a heartbreaking note years after her death.
Grace Kelly, 4, passed away in November 2014 from a rare form of kidney cancer.

Just a few weeks after her death, her heartbroken relatives took a flight with Monarch Airlines and stashed a photo of her sitting in a plane on a funfair ride behind the jet’s bathroom mirror.
A touching tribute on the back of the snap read: “Our little angel had always wanted to fly – so she flies with Monarch – hidden away for as long as possible.
“Happy travels darling Grace, you made our life just perfect for all too short a time.”
The beautiful gesture has only just been discovered during a routine check by Frontier Airlines, which took over Monarch after its 2017 collapse.
Airline mechanics Cullen Johns and Shaun Brown found it as they worked on the aircraft in Tampa Bay, Florida, half the world away from Grace’s home in Crowle, Worcestershire.
The pair were so touched by it that they used social media to track down Grace’s mother, Dr Jen Kelly, and inform her.
Dr Kelly said: “I am so proud of Grace and all that she has managed to achieve.
“I always knew that Grace would move mountains.
“This is not the way anyone would have chosen, but now Grace is not only moving mountains but soaring above them too. She never had the chance to fly in a plane, so to know she is flying around high in the clouds is truly special.”
Johns and Brown also told her that they would keep the picture of her daughter on the plane in her memory.
The heartbroken mum added: “We are so thankful to Frontier Airlines for keeping Grace on board and we are truly grateful they tracked us down to let us know.
“Thank you so much to everyone who has made this possible for our girl.
“It feels so special to know that Grace’s photo has been flying for so many years and continues to do so.”
Dr Kelly founded and runs The Grace Kelly Childhood Cancer Trust in her beloved daughter’s memory, raising funds to fight the awful disease.

Paul O’Grady’s heartbreaking final post mourning loss of beloved pet days before he died aged 67
PAUL O’Grady spoke of his heartache at losing one of his beloved pets just days before he died at age 67.
The Lilly Savage and Radio 2 star passed away “unexpectedly but peacefully” yesterday evening.
The star’s cause of death is yet to be confirmed[/caption]
Paul‘s cause of death is yet to be confirmed, but he had struggled with his health in recent years.
The shock loss has left fans and fellow celebs around the world heartbroken.
And just two weeks ago Paul told how he was grieving – after the loss of one of his beloved pet pigs.
Along with a video of the hog, animal lover Paul wrote: “Got back from a week in Newcastle playing Miss Hannigan in Annie to find that Tom Tom, one of my pigs had been put to sleep.
“I knew it was coming as he’d been diagnosed with a tumour but even so it’s awful when you lose a pet.
“He was the cheekiest of the gang and one of the other pigs who was obviously very fond of him is now depressed and gone into mourning and there’s those who say that animals don’t have feelings.
“On a lighter note I’m thoroughly enjoying playing Hannigan again after so long especially with a truly amazing and lovely cast. Next stop Edinburgh.”
Last night, Paul’s husband Andre Portasio said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening.
“We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss.
“He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion.
“I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years.”
Paul had been touring around the country in Annie, playing character Ms Hannigan right up until his death.
He had been booked to play the part for another week in Liverpool in June.
Born on June 14, 1955 in Birkenhead, before he hit the big time, TV star Paul performed as Lily Savage in the 80s.
He started off working the drag circuit with his act across pubs and clubs, and as he grew popular he eventually toured the country.
From 1989 to 1992, Paul performed annually as Lily at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, gaining increasing recognition for his act.
Paul followed this with a show titled Lily Savage Live from the Hackney Empire, which proved to be a sell-out.
Once he had gained national success, Paul was then asked to bring his act to mainstream TV.
He made guest appearances on TV programmes like The Bill and Brookside.
But it was when he took over from the late Paula Yates on The Big Breakfast from 1995 to 96 that he really hit the big time.
However he packed it in after one year saying that the early mornings “didn’t agree” with him.
As Lily he also hosted a reboot of hit BBC quiz show Blankety Blank.
Paul and Cilla Black were firm friends right up until she died back in 2015.
He even delivered the eulogy at Cilla’s funeral.
