Ryan Blaney’s NASCAR Consistency Is Fueled by Core Work and Mario Kart
There’d be no Mario Kart 8 Deluxe without Mario Kart Wii – here’s why
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is one of the best-selling games of all time. The little plumber and his ragtag bunch of unlikely friends have convinced over 50 million people to empty their wallets and purses for his tarmac-based exploits since the game launched in 2017.
However, none of that would have been possible without Mario Kart Wii, which first hit Nintendo’s motion-tracking mini-console 15 years ago today. The oft-overlooked entry in the esteemed karting series introduced new ways to race, welcomed some magnificent new tracks, and even layered in new mechanics that are enjoyed to this day in the more modern Mario Kart titles. So why does Mario Kart Wii get pushed to the side of the road when we discuss the success of the series as a whole?
Many gamers look down on the Wii due to its casual game lineup, but Mario Kart Wii is an important stepping stone in the series – even if it does, often, get drifted past. Mario Kart Wii brought in bikes for the first time in the series’ history, allowing players to wheelie and race around at top speed. On two-wheelers, it was tough to steer around corners – but if you mastered the bike, you’d certainly gain an advantage because of how light the vehicle is, and how that affected its ability to speed up.
Trying to recreate Mario Kart in the Fortnite editor could get you banned
Epic Games’ new Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) toolset has only been out for two days, but the company is already having to threaten permanent bans for creators making content that violates copyright. That even goes for violating content that creators post about on social media and content that they aren’t going to actually publish.
“All content in Fortnite must adhere to Fortnite’s game rating, Fortnite Island Creator Rules and intellectual property and DMCA guidelines,” Epic wrote in a blog post on Friday. “Those who create violating content in UEFN — even if they never intend to publish it in Fortnite — or share violating content on social media, will face content takedowns and enforcement actions, up to and including permanent…
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is getting 5 more characters
With Wave 4 of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC out in the wild, players have noticed the character selector screen is missing a few entries.
These entries are denoted by five question marks, indicating more racers are coming in the future.
There are at least two more DLC waves slated to release, so it appears Nintendo will have to drop multiple racers per wave.
Nintendo takes Wii U games ‘Mario Kart 8’ and ‘Splatoon’ offline over security issues
Nintendo has taken Wii U titles Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon offline indefinitely while it attempts to resolve security issues. “This network service is currently unavailable due to urgent maintenance required to fix a vulnerability related to online play,” reads a message posted to Nintendo’s website at 11:30PM ET on Thursday. “We do not yet have information on when network services can be restored. We apologize for any inconvenience caused.”
As VGC notes, the vulnerability could be related to an exploit that allows an attacker to take control of a victim’s system simply by way of being matched with them in an online multiplayer game. Dataminer OatmealDome suggested the issue is “almost certainly” due to ENLBufferPwn.
Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS was previously vulnerable to that exploit. Several Switch games apparently were too, including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Nintendo Switch Sports and Splatoon 2 and 3. Nintendo has seemingly patched all of those titles to protect them against the exploit.
A video posted by YouTuber PabloMK7 in December shows ENLBufferPwn in action on Mario Kart 7. It’s used to inject custom firmware onto the targeted console. PabloMK7 wrote on GitHub that “it would be theoretically possible” to steal an account or credit card information and to record a victim using the 3DS’ mic and cameras.
With nearly 8.5 million copies sold, Mario Kart 8 was the biggest-selling game on the Wii U. The original Splatoon sold almost 5 million. Those who are still playing the games on the discontinued system might be disappointed that the online features are currently unavailable, but it seems Nintendo was left with little choice but to take them offline for now.
The issue emerged only a few weeks before Nintendo shuts down the Wii U and 3DS eShops. After March 27th, owners of the systems won’t be able to make purchases on the digital storefronts, but they’ll still be able to download titles they previously bought. Meanwhile, Nintendo just revealed the latest courses that are coming to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch next week as part of the Booster Course Pass.

Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon on the Wii U go offline due to vulnerability
Nintendo has taken down the online features of the Wii U versions of Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon today due to an unspecified security vulnerability. VGC reports that the games were taken offline at 11:30PM ET last night and that the company suggests the fix could take days (via IGN). The Nintendo Switch versions of the games are not affected.
At time of writing, Nintendo’s server operational status page currently has this message posted:
Splatoon , Mario Kart 8 — This network service is currently unavailable due to urgent maintenance required to fix a vulnerability related to online play. We do not yet have information on when network services can be restored. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. (Error Code: 106-0811)
