This 7-Game, $9 Bundle Comes With A New Metroidvania
Fanatical’s New Realms bundle collects some of the coolest new indies of the last few years, offering $96 worth of PC games for just $9.
The seven-game bundle includes a few metroidvania titles like the side-scrolling action-RPG Elderand, which just released earlier this year. There’s also Clunky Hero, which is a narrative-focused metroidvania platformer with humorous dialogue and a unique hand-painted graphical style.
Fans of action roguelikes will likely enjoy Orbital Bullet, which is a side-scrolling 2.5D shooter where you blast waves of enemies in 360-degree circular stages.
Stop the ‘prophetic birth of a new miracle child’ in this deeply weird Metroidvania
RPS@PAX 2023: We chat with solo dev Billy Basso and publisher Bigmode about their upcoming moody metroidvania Animal Well
Out of all the game demos Liam and I have played at PAX East, we both agree that Animal Well is something special. It’s a 2D metriodvania where you play as a little blob trying to navigate a subtterranean labyrinth filled with creatures – some cute, some not so cute.
To find out more about this strange puzzle platformer’s beginnings and development, we spoke to solo develeoper Billy Basso and Bigmode’s Leah Gastrow which you can view in the two videos below.
You can watch me interview Billy here:
Is Patch Quest a roguelike, Metroidvania, bullet hell, or Pokémon-like? Yes
Patch Quest performs an impressive juggling act
The Knight Witch shows a magical bullet-hell is a great match for a Metroidvania
Bullet hell shooters have never been one of my fortes in games. There is certainly something magical about watching masters of the genre weave effortlessly in and out of flying orbs in the likes of Gradius, R-Type and Ikaruga, but whenever I attempt to step up to the gamepad myself, my movements have always proven too flighty, too seized by panic, to make much headway with them. Enter The Knight Witch, which takes the thrill of the bullet hell shooter and wraps it up in a lovely Metroid-like-shaped package my brain can actually understand. It’s a fantastic little game, and I’m only sorry we didn’t cover it in more detail when it came out at the end of November last year.
Intriguing pixel Metroidvania Animal Well has found a publisher
Platforming adventure Animal Well has been picked up by Bigmode, the indie publishing company set up last year by YouTuber Videogamedunkey. The Metroidvania is being developed by Shared Memories, another name for solo dev Billy Basso. Basso is crafting a multi-layered puzzle horror platformer that he hopes will keep people playing the game for years, and collaborating to solve its mysteries. You can see a bit more of what to expect from Animal Well in the preview video below.
Far Cry 6 expansion Lost Between Worlds is a multiverse metroidvania
Ubisoft has revealed the first major Far Cry 6 expansion, Lost Between Worlds. The DLC adds a new storyline to the FPS game, tossing hero Dani into an alien multiverse version of Yara where they’ll have to fight and explore in order to return to reality. Plus, some major new features have been added to Far Cry 6 today, including New Game+ mode and a chunky free trial.

Ghost Song review: a melancholy Metroidvania with a hint of Hollow Knight
Ghost Song is a 2D Metroid-like that’s always a feast for the eyes, but a frequent frustration for your head and hands. Its gorgeous art direction depicts a vibrant alien world that bubbles and throbs with bio-mechanical life, where spore clouds and fleshy organic tunnels live side by side with floating metal skulls and impenetrable thickets of wires and cables. It’s a fascinating place that seems to morph and change with every passing map segment, calling to mind the animated techno gunge of Akira and Metropolis one minute, and the flowering brilliance of Alex Garland’s Annihilation the next. Its roots sink deep, creating a world you’ll want to explore every last nook and cranny of as you delve deeper into its underbelly to find out why you’re here.
But Deadsuit, your android-like protagonist, makes for a slightly rusty-feeling companion at times, lacking the grace and elegance of Nintendo’s Samus Aran, and the nimble dexterity of Team Cherry’s nameless knight. It will tide you over until Silksong arrives, for sure, but it also never quite sings in the way you’d hope.
The Siege And The Sandfox is a sneaky 2D Metroidvania
I assumed we must have written about The Siege And The Sandfox before, but nope. It therefore falls to me to tell you about this “2D stealth Metroidvania”. Those words alone are enough to get me interested, but there’s a trailer below that shows it in action if you need a little more.
