Phoebe “Fleabag” Waller-Bridge is writing a Tomb Raider TV show for Amazon
Lara Croft has seen her fair share of live-action adaptations, but this time she’s raiding the small screen with a Tomb Raider TV series and a film in development at Amazon. THR reported that the Emmy-winning Fleabag writer Pheobe Waller-Bridge is set to pen (and executive produce) the upcoming show, though there’s no word on who’s attached with the film. THR states that Amazon is looking to “build out a connected world of Tomb Raider, with the video game, TV series and film.” This sounds a little ambitious, considering that Crytal Dynamics’ game is already in production, so we’ll have to wait and see how the adaptations interact with the games.
Amazon is developing a Tomb Raider series with Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge at the helm
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, best known as the creator of the Emmy-winning series Fleabag, is apparently helming a new Tomb Raider show.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Waller-Bridge is developing a Tomb Raider show for Amazon, as part of a larger deal with the company that is seeing her produce multiple projects for the retail and streaming company. According to The Hollywood Reporter’s sources, Waller-Bridge is attached to write scripts for the series, but has no plans to star in it herself. The writer-actor is also serving as executive producer on the series alongside Ryan Andolina, the former head of comedy at Amazon, as well as Amanda Greenblatt.
There’s no more details other than that on the project, so it’s obviously pretty early days currently. This isn’t the only live action adaptation of the classic series, receiving a 2001 film starring Angelina Jolie, and a later 2018 film starring Alicia Vikander. The latter was somewhat meant to be a live action reboot following on from the success of the 2013 video game reboot.
Amazon is reportedly making a Tomb Raider TV show and movie written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge
Earlier Friday, The Hollywood Reporter said that Amazon is developing a TV series based on the Tomb Raider video game franchise with scripts written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. But that’s apparently not all: later in the day, Deadline corroborated the report about the TV series and added that a new Tomb Raider movie is in the works at Amazon Studios, too.
Details are light on these new Tomb Raider adaptations, but THR says that while Waller-Bridge will serve as a writer and executive producer on the show, she won’t be starring. The show is apparently still in the development stages, so we probably shouldn’t expect to see it anytime soon.
This new series and movie could end up as more big video game franchise adaptations for Amazon, which…
Tomb Raider TV Series Coming To Amazon From Phoebe Waller-Bridge
Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny) is reportedly developing a TV series based on the Tomb Raider video games. The Hollywood Reporter was first to report.
According to unnamed sources, Waller-Bridge will write the scripts for the series, with no plans for her to star in the TV adaptation. She will executive produce the series alongside Amazon’s former head of comedy and drama, Ryan Andolina, plus former head of overall deals Amanda Greenblatt. No official comment or detailshave been issued yet.
Tomb Raider is the latest project for Waller-Bridge with Amazon under her overall deal with the streaming platform. She is also developing and writing an adaptation of the Claudia Lux novel Sign Here, which is a “darkly humorous, surprisingly poignant, and utterly gripping debut novel about a guy who works in Hell (literally) and is on the cusp of a big promotion.”

Some things belong in a museum, some things in the resume of Fleabag icon Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Or at least, so the writer-actress believes, as she’s whipping from one treasure-seeking adventure franchise to another.
