Seth Rogen, Chris Pratt, And Charlie Day All Want Mario x Metroid
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is here, it’s great, and it’s poised to dominate the box office and spawn a new movie franchise–or maybe even a full-blown cinematic universe with some of Nintendo’s many other intellectual properties.
It’s an enticing prospect, and hardly impossible to imagine when mega-franchises like Marvel and Star Wars continue to dominate pop culture. And so we couldn’t help but ask Mario, Luigi, and Donkey Kong themselves–that’s Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, and Seth Rogen–about the possibility of moving past the borders of the Mario galaxy and meeting some other Nintendo folks.
All three had the same first answer: Metroid.

‘Super Mario Bros’: Chris Pratt and Charlie Day unpack their ‘effort sounds’ as Mario and Luigi
What are “effort sounds” in an animated film? Especially when you’re playing Mario, Luigi, or Donkey Kong? The Super Mario Bros Movie stars Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, and Seth Rogen sat down with Mashable’s UK Editor Shannon Connellan and reporter Ty Cole to talk about how to reassure young audiences with sound effects, who their go-to Mario Kart players are, and the specific lines that get them into character.

Chris Pratt: “I Think Your Childhood Is Firmly Intact,” Super Mario Bros. Movie Won’t Ruin It
The Super Mario Bros. Movie won’t stomp all over your (touch) fuzzy memories of the Nintendo icon, according to Chris Pratt. The actor, who voices Mario, believes the animated film is worthy of the video game character’s legacy.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Pratt acknowledged the trepidation of a new Mario movie and his casting for the titular role. “Just because something has reach doesn’t mean it’s going to be a good movie, and there’s instances of people making bad movies and ruining people’s childhoods,” he said. “So the pressure was on to not do that and, thankfully, we didn’t. I think the movie is fantastic, and I think your childhood is firmly intact.”
The Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy star also admitted he was apprehensive at first about joining The Super Mario Bros. Movie. “It makes sense, I was pretty nervous when they offered it to me,” said Pratt. “I thought, ‘Wow, let’s not screw this up.'”
Super Mario Bros. Movie’s Chris Pratt defends voice-casting decisions
In an interview with Extra TV, both Charlie Day and Chris Pratt talk about the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie, and ongoing criticism it has received for its choice of cast (thanks, NintendoLife). Namely, Chris Pratt.
Unless you’ve been living under some sort of colossal rock for the past few months, you’re well aware that marketing for the Super Mario Bros. Movie has ramped up. From Mario-themed Amazon packaging to a collaboration with LUSH, Mario truly knows no bounds.
That said, you’re probably also well aware of the backlash that the voice cast for the Super Mario Bros. Movie has received. It all started with Chris Pratt saying his voice for Mario is “unlike anything you’ve heard,” and ended with the reveal of Pratt’s voice for Mario; it was, and is, Pratt’s voice.
Wahoo! Turns out Chris Pratt can do a Mario voice
When we first heard Chris Pratt’s Mario voice in the initial trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it didn’t sound like Charles Martinet’s iconic Mario voice at all. But in a new interview to promote the film, Pratt busted out a Mario voice that actually sounds almost exactly like what you hear in the Nintendo games.
Just listen to Pratt’s “wahoo” and “it’s-a me” yourself in this video from BBC’s The One Show:
