The US strengthens air quality rule for soot
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized a significantly stricter standard today for fine particle pollution, commonly referred to as soot. It’s the first time in twelve years that the agency has updated the rule to reflect current science and the culmination of a power struggle that has spanned three presidential administrations.
Tackling this kind of pollution is like battling a dragon with many heads — it comes from power plants, factories, vehicles, wildfires, and anything else you can imagine that produces soot. That’s made this rule a major target for both health advocates pushing for more protective policies and industries lobbying to keep current, more lax regulations in place.
For now, at least, health advocates are…
YouTube TV gets a 1080p Enhanced option that offers better video quality
YouTube TV users are getting a higher-quality video option for everything from binging their favorite shows to catching a live game. Google is rolling out a new setting called 1080p Enhanced for YouTube TV and Primetime Channels subscribers. The 1080p Enhanced setting improves on the existing 1080p60 resolution with its upgraded bitrate.
Google confirmed the update after a Reddit user posted about it on the platform. The 1080p Enhanced setting “delivers our highest video quality,” according to the response. Reddit users who already have access to 1080p Enhanced report that the resolution is available for all of the same channels as 1080p60, such as Paramount and Syfy. The 1080p Enhanced option also follows YouTube Premium, which boosted video quality for subscribers on the company’s original platform.
In this case, any YouTube TV and Primetime Channels subscribers with an updated 4K-compatible streaming device should gain access to the option by accessing video quality settings. However, Google has discovered a bug that stops users from manually choosing 1080p Enhanced. However, the company reports that the bug doesn’t impact picture quality and that it is working to fix the problem.

Report Reveals Decline In Quality of USB Sticks, MicroSD Cards
Technological advancements have also affected these NAND chips, but not in a good way. The chips originally used single-level cell (SLC) memory cells that only stored one bit each, offering less data density but better performance and reliability. In order to increase the amount of storage the chips offered, manufacturers started moving to four bits per cell (QLC), decreasing the endurance and retention. Combined with the questionable components, it’s why CBL warns that “You shouldn’t rely too much on the reliability of flash memory.”
The report illustrates how some of the components found in the devices had their manufactures’ names removed or obscured. One simply printed text over the top of the company name, while another had been scrubbed off completely. There’s also a photo of a microSD card found inside a USB stick that had all of its identifying markings removed. It’s always wise to be careful when choosing your storage device and beware of offers that seem too good to be true.
