Final Fantasy 1-6 Pixel Remaster console creeps closer to definitive status, despite some small frustrations
After months of fans pleading with Square Enix to do so on social media, the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters are finally hitting consoles – available this week for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. And intriguingly, these aren’t functionally the same versions as debuted on PC and mobile. In fact, they’re subtly improved.
These are small changes, but they add up to something greater. It pushes these titles ever closer to being very nearly the definitive versions of classics. In fact, hardcore fans will now likely have a headache on their hands deciding which version of each 2D FF to play.
For the most part, our original review of the first three games stands. Back in 2021, I said these ports had vast room for improvement. The console versions are improved… but there’s still many areas where they could – and arguably should – do better. Nevertheless, they’re now far more worthy versions of these classic games.

Following backlash, Ark remaster is now more expensive, old servers still being shutdown
After some fan backlash over how the Ark: Survival Evolved remaster is being handled, Studio Wildcard has responded by… making it more expensive.
Last week, Studio Wildcard made a couple of big announcements related to the Ark series. The first one, that Ark 2 has been delayed into 2024, is completely unsurprising, as we have seen literally nothing of the game so far. The second one was a little more surprising though, as the studio announced that Ark: Survival Evolved is getting a big remaster called Ark: Survival Ascended, as well as the fact that Survival Evolved’s servers are getting shut down, meaning players would have to buy the remaster. Fans didn’t like this much, so obviously Studio Wildcard’s solution was to make it more expensive.
To further explain, in the announcement Wildcard revealed that if you want to play the game on Xbox or PC, you had to buy a bundle which also contains the upcoming second game for $49.99 (on PS5 you could buy just Survival Ascended for $39.99). On top of that players would have to buy upcoming expansion packs. Now, in a new post from Wildcard, apparently none of this is the case.
Ark remaster now even more expensive, doesn’t include Ark 2 any more
On March 31, Studio Wildcard announced that the Vin Diesel-starring survival game Ark 2 would be delayed until 2024, and that a remaster of the original Ark Survival Evolved, built using Unreal Engine 5, would release as Ark Survival Ascended. Included with Survival Ascended would be access to the full Ark 2, with the bundle priced at $50 USD. However, the developer has now altered its plans, announcing that Survival Ascended will instead be sold separately for $59.99 USD, and will no longer include access to the sequel, as we approach the Ark 2 release date.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection Is Coming To Consoles On April 19
Square Enix has announced that the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series will be released for PS4 and Nintendo Switch on April 19.
The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series contains remastered versions of the first six Final Fantasy games. Updates include rearranged soundtracks with original composer Nobuo Uematsu at the helm, modernized UI, auto-battle functions, and more.
For the console release, players can switch between the original and rearranged soundtracks and if they’d like to explore the map, turn off random encounters. There are also boost features that speed up the amount of experience accumulated for faster and easier runs, and players can gain up to four times the amount of experience with adjusted settings.

Ark 2 is delayed, so they’re turning off Survival Evolved’s official servers and charging $50 for a remaster
ARK 2 has been delayed until the end of 2024. The dinosaur survival sequel currently best known for having Vin Diesel in it, for some reason, was originally aiming for a 2023 release, but developers Studio Wildcard say they need more time.
To compensate, they’re going to instead release Ark: Survival Ascended in August, a remaster of the original Ark: Survival Evolved that moves it over to Unreal Engine 5. That’s the good news. The bad news is you can only buy it in a $50 bundle with the sequel (which won’t be finished for at least a year), and that the original Survival Evolved servers will be switched off when Ascended launches.
Ark 2 delayed but a Survival Evolved remaster is coming, for a price
Studio Wildcard announces an Ark 2 delay, meaning that we won’t see Vin Diesel take up his spear in the next iteration of the hugely popular dinosaur survival game until “the end of 2024” on Steam and PC Game Pass. Instead, the team says players can look forward to a remaster of the first game titled Ark: Survival Ascended – although the decision to make the update paid, despite past suggestions it might be free, and shut down official servers for the original after the remake’s launch leaves many scratching their heads.
