Inside Alton Towers’ mysterious plans for new ‘secret rollercoaster’ – here’s everything we know
PLANS for a new rollercoaster at Alton Towers have been given the green light.
But details of the £12.5 million ride – referred to as “new coaster” in the planning application – remain a closely-guarded secret.

Nemesis rollercoaster ride at Alton Towers Theme Park closed last year after thrilling Brits since 1994[/caption]
The Staffordshire-based park say they are keeping their lips sealed to maximise enjoyment for customers.
But there are some key giveaways that have been revealed in the plans passed by councillors earlier this week.
The first is that the mysterious ride will be dark green to match the surrounding landscape.
And it will be a whopping 20m (65ft) tall and include a vast 71 metre-long building.
The queue to reach the attraction will be through existing woodland.
Alton Towers has labelled the mysterious plans Project Horizon.
The land the new ride will be built on is currently being used as a maintenance and storage yard, but was once home to The Mouse ride.
Following the plans, Alton Towers boss Francis Jackson said it was “vital” the theme park “refreshes” its offers to remain competitive.
He added: “Ongoing investment in attractions is even more important against the backdrop of the recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.”
Mr Jackson stressed that the park was excited to “bring something new to the resort”.
Ben Emery, a local councillor of Staffordshire Moorland District, said colleagues were as clueless about the “highly secretive” plans as the thrill-seeking public.
He told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): “None of us know what’s going on in there.”
But he stressed the park has “consistently delivered good, impressive, exciting rides that our children and ourselves have loved for many years”.
The park’s massively popular Nemesis rollercoaster shut last year having thrilled Brits since 1994.
Bella Ramsay is incredible in HBO’s The Last of Us rollercoaster opener
I have not played The Last of Us. I’ve had plenty of opportunity to do so, and as the horror aficionado that I claim to be, it feels blasphemous that I haven’t yet checked out the games. However, I have commitment issues and a poor attention span, and despite my flatmate’s endless attempts at convincing me to sit down and play it, I’ve instead continually shied away from the game.
HBO’s The Last of Us has since rolled around, and like most others who also haven’t played the game, I was immediately eager to see what it was about the story that has so many fans raving about it to no end. Needless to say, I finished off the first episode of HBO’s The Last of Us feeling equal parts weepy and thrilled – but, most importantly, desperate for more.
What exactly am I desperate for more of, though? The show itself, for sure. However, to say that would do a severe injustice as to what made the first episode so enjoyable for me, and that’s Bella Ramsay. Frankly, all that’s echoing in my mind right now is: “Are you my fucking mom or something?”

A GREAT horror film can feel like riding a rollercoaster – you laugh, you scream, you want to get off and then you don’t want it to end.
All emotions that are felt when watching top-class terror, Barbarian.
Tess has to endure a night with stranger, Keith[/caption]
Tess (Georgina Campbell) has arrived at her Airbnb to find Keith (Bill Skarsgard) has already rented it[/caption]
The low-budget but highly skilled film is a tale of two halves.
The first is set up as a relatable nightmare.
Tess (Georgina Campbell) has arrived at her Airbnb to find Keith (Bill Skarsgard) has already rented it.

It’s dark, raining, Tess has an important job interview the next day and there’s a convention in town, meaning every hotel room is booked.
While Keith seems like a pretty reasonable chap, it’s never a good idea to stay in a house with a slightly socially awkward man.
First-class fear
You have a deep sense there’s something very off about Keith. The casting of Skarsgard — who is old hat at horror having played Pennywise in the recent IT franchise — is perfect.
He’s a bit good-looking but also a bit, well, strange-looking. And he’s able to make his eyes disconcertingly unreadable.

But after much convincing, Tess does stay — with Keith on the sofa and her in a bedroom with a lock.
Things do go bump in the night, though, and soon Tess finds herself in a terrifying basement room that holds a filthy mattress, bloody hand-prints on the wall and a camcorder up to no good.
After much mischief in the basement occurs — none of which I can share without spoilers — the film suddenly cuts to arrogant actor AJ (Justin Long, on some excellent comedy-horror form) who is driving along a sunny coastal road in his sportscar.
His smarmy smile is soon wiped off his face with a call from his agent, who reveals AJ’s latest co-star has accused him of sexual assault and he has been dropped from his movie.
There’s only one thing for it. AJ has to sell some of his rental properties — one of which is, you guessed it, the one where Tess and Keith are having that interesting time in the basement.
On his visit to the house, he finds a lot more than just some dodgy damp patches — and soon this film is spinning out into a world of first-class fear.
The cast’s main trio put in top performances, getting the perfect balance of comedy, empathy and just plain awful.
By the time it’s over, you’ll want to queue up for another go.
THE GOOD NURSE

WHY did American nurse Charles Cullen kill a suspected 400 patients in his care?
If you are hoping this Netflix dramatisation of real events is going to answer that question, you are going to be disappointed.
Eddie Redmayne’s Cullen is as distant as a UK economic recovery – and for me that’s what makes The Good Nurse so great.
It does not seek to get under the skin of this serial killer or explain his actions.
Such monsters should not be “understood.”
Instead, the focus is on Jessica Chastain’s hero nurse Amy Loughren, who helped bring her colleague Cullen to justice.
While others turned a blind eye to the threat posed by this killer on the wards, she risked her job and health to take him on. Danish director Tobias Lindholm sensibly approaches this as a thriller rather than a medical drama – I watched creepy Cullen’s interactions with single mum Amy through my hands. Lindholm also draws intense performances from both Redmayne and Chastain.
Be warned, The Good Nurse will leave you psychologically drained.

Family of rollercoaster crash victim, 26, in coma with ‘horrific injuries’ slam online trolls after cruel abuse
THE family of a rollercoaster victim who was horrifically injured and is fighting for her life have slammed online trolls after being hit with cruel abuse.
Shylah Rodden, 26, remains in a coma in critical condition after the tragic accident which unfolded at the Royal Melbourne Show in Australia on Sunday evening.

And while her family sit heartbroken at her bedside, they’re fighting online trolls[/caption]
Her dad says she has been left brain damaged with horrific injuries after she was said to have been dragged nine metres into the air before she plunged to the ground in front of horrified visitors.
But, as Shylah’s loved ones rally around her broken body in hospital, they are also battling online abuse.
Her sister Caisha told the DailyMail: “It’s sad and disgusting to see the false stories and cover up when my sister is fighting for her life.”
Online trolls have coldly blamed Shylah for the tragedy, after police and show organisers said she had been hit while trying to retrieve her mobile phone.

One man wrote under a news story about the tragedy: “Serves herself right for going where she is not supposed to be going.”
Another said: “It’s not a freak accident, when she was somewhere she wasn’t supposed to be.”
Many of the comments were so cruel the press has chosen not to publish them.
Caisha said the rumours were causing even greater pain to her family who are already struggling to cope.

She said: “Definitely misinformation regarding the accident, which is really sad and causing more distress for our family.
“Shylah is in critical condition and we won’t know more until later today as we will be discussing with police and giving some eye witness statements.”
Her father, Alan Rodden, said mystery still surrounds how Shylah was hit.
He said: “There are a lot of stories going around and I don’t know which one is true and if someone is covering their tracks.”
On the day of the tragic accident, paramedics treated Shylah for serious facial injuries at the scene before rushing her to hospital in a critical condition.
Alan said his daughter will be in a coma for quite a while.
He told the Daily Mail: “The injuries are horrific. Horrific. She’s brain damaged. It’s pelvic, her arms, legs, back, neck – there’s hardly a thing that’s not broken.
“I just can’t work out how the hell so much damage has been done.
“Even the doctors have said they haven’t seen anything as bad as this for a long time.”
‘Loud bang and screams’
Caisha had said Shylah was working at the show when the horrific event unfolded.
She said: “She was helping out her friend at her stall for the day and she was sent on her break with another worker and they decided to go on a few rides to kill time and this happened unfortunately.”
One show attendee, Nathan Sanders, said he saw something fall from the corner of his eyes and heard screams.
The 18-year-old said: “Me and my friend were like ‘what the hell was that?’
“They were quite quick to act, they put up the barrier quite quickly and then there was an ambulance down and the crowd gathered around and they started pushing people away saying nothing happened… but obviously at the end of the day you don’t want to scare people.
“There were huge crowds of people.”
Another eyewitness said: “She flew from the ride, loud bang. Followed by a scream and very loud crack of her hitting the ground.”
A stall owner at the show said she heard the rollercoaster suddenly come to a screeching halt as people starting screaming.
She told The Herald Sun: “The screaming was so loud. I think everyone must have been really scared.
“The ride went up like normal, then there were screams, then it stopped and stayed that way for ages.”
‘Tragic accident’
On Monday, CEO of the Melbourne Royal Show Brad Jenkins said it was a “tragic accident that shouldn’t have happened”.
Mr Jenkins said: “From our understanding, there was a mobile phone at the base of the Rebel Coaster that she dropped on the ride and she went back to recover the mobile phone.
“Regrettably, she was tragically struck by the cart coming down.”
He also clarified that the incident was a “tragic accident, not a malfunction of a ride,” and that the rides were safe for public use.
However, speaking to ABC Mornings on Monday, Mr Jenkins refused to speculate as to whether the ride was cordoned off by a fence, and how Shylah accessed the base of the Rebel Coaster.

He said: “I can’t comment specifically on that particular ride. There [are] operators down at each of the rides.”
Investigations by WorkSafe are ongoing, however, the ride could be reopened to public as early as Tuesday.
