United and Archer will open an air taxi route to Chicago’s O’Hare airport in 2025
Archer Aviation and United Airlines announced a partnership today to launch a commercial air taxi route in Chicago. The companies plan to open the flight path between downtown and O’Hare International Airport in 2025.
Besides being United’s headquarters and largest hub, Chicago’s airport commute makes it an ideal testbed for flying taxis. For example, the drive to or from O’Hare, in the western suburb of Rosemont, can take anywhere from 35 minutes to over an hour, depending on traffic; even in one of the city’s elevated trains, it can take around 45 minutes. But Archer estimates a flight in one of its air taxis will only take 10 minutes to travel from O’Hare to its destination at a downtown helipad. The program will initially be limited to the mainline O’Hare / downtown route, but the companies eventually plan to add smaller paths to surrounding communities.
Archer describes the upcoming route as “cost competitive” for passengers without going into specifics. But even if it’s initially limited to deep-pocketed business travelers, the program should be good for the environment. Archer’s air taxis use electric motors and batteries and don’t produce emissions. “This exciting new technology will further decarbonize our means of transportation, taking us another step forward in our fight against climate change,” said Mayor Lori Lightfoot. “I’m pleased that Chicago residents will be among the first in the nation to experience this innovative, convenient form of travel.”
The partnership is the latest in United’s aggressive investments in flying taxis. Last year, the airline ordered at least 200 electric flying taxis from Eve Air Mobility; that followed a $10 million deposit it placed with Archer the month prior.
In addition to Chicago’s (ground-based) taxis and ride shares, the city has a robust public transportation system built around elevated trains and buses, the latter of which the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has committed to converting to electric by 2040. (The CTA already deploys 23 electric buses.) If all goes according to plan, the flight path will help decrease emissions and traffic congestion, something most Chi-town residents can get behind.

Waze is adding electric vehicle charging stations to its route planning tool
Electric vehicle owners who prefer Waze to other navigation tools, rejoice: the Google-owned company is adding EV charging stations to its route planning tools in an effort to improve the experience for plug seekers.
Starting today, Waze users can input their vehicle information into the app, as well as their preferred plug type, and Waze will find the nearest stations along their route. The feature will roll out to users globally in the “coming weeks,” the company says. (How it will work at launch is up for debate: some users were reporting being routed to gas stations instead of EV chargers.)
Waze briefly trialed adding EV chargers to its route planning tool back in 2021 in partnership with Volkswagen. But that trial…

Netflix goes gaming: Kentucky Route Zero, Twelve Minutes and TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge are heading to the service
Kentucky Route Zero is a point-and-click adventure game that follows Conway, a truck driver making one final delivery for the antiques company he works for. You’ll encounter plenty of strangers along Route Zero in Kentucky as you make your way through five acts. The first arrived way back in January…
Netflix subscribers can now play ‘Kentucky Route Zero’ and ‘Twelve Minutes’ on mobile
Netflix has added two more titles to its (very good) stable of mobile games: Kentucky Route Zero and Twelve Minutes. They’re the first Annapurna Interactive titles to join the lineup. They’re available now for all subscribers, including those on the ad-supported plan, on iOS and Android.
It’s been a while since Netflix first said it would bring Kentucky Route Zero to its library and it’s a welcome addition. It’s a narrative-driven point-and-click adventure game that took the developers at Cardboard Computer almost a decade to see through. The first chapter debuted in 2013 and the fifth and final one arrived in 2020. It was a long journey, but the BAFTA award winner garnered strong reviews along the way.
Twelve Minutes, on the other hand, wasn’t received quite as warmly. It’s a time loop game with a trio of stars in the main roles: Daisy Ridley, James McAvoy and Willem Dafoe. However, we felt that some bad twists ruined a promising idea. You can try it out on your phone now.
Netflix also revealed a couple other games that are coming to the service in the first three months of 2023. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, which dropped on other platforms earlier this year, is an absolute joy. Tribute Games did a fantastic job of capturing everything great about the TMNT beat-’em-ups of the late ’80s and early ’90s and updating them for a modern audience. Shredder’s Revenge will only be available on mobile if you’re a Netflix subscriber.
Also on deck for early 2023 is Vikings: Valhalla from Tilting Point. This is a tie-in to Netflix’s sequel to Vikings, which debuted earlier this year. In this strategy game, you’ll lead Viking clans and build settlements. Eventually, you’ll battle against others as you try to extend your reach across the continent.
Meanwhile, Netflix recently announced Valiant Hearts: Coming Home, the first of three Ubisoft games that are coming to the service next year. It’s a sequel to Valiant Hearts: The Great War and will tell the story of the Harlem Hellfighters, who were the first African-American infantry unit to fight in World War I. Expect this one in early 2023 as well.
