Down in Q1, US IT job market rebounded slightly in March: Report
Economic uncertainty coupled with widespread tech industry layoffs drove CIOs and CFOs to slow IT hiring last quarter. March was the first month this year that saw an uptick in the number of IT jobs added, according to a new report.
In the first quarter of 2023, the US IT job market lost 13,700 jobs, according to management consulting firm Janco Associates. That contrasts with 51,000 jobs created in Q1 of 2022. Currently, there are now just over 4.18 million jobs for IT professionals in the US.
Twitter slightly changed NPR’s “state-affiliated media” label
Different isn’t always better.
That’s arguably the case with one of the latest developments on Elon Musk’s Twitter. The official Twitter account for National Public Radio (or NPR) controversially got a “U.S. state-affiliated media” label on its profile last week, which was quietly changed to “government-funded media” over the weekend, per Gizmodo. The original label is typically attached to more overtly propagandistic pages.
NPR hasn’t tweeted since the label originally showed up.

The difference between the two is largely semantic. In fact, clicking on the label brings you to a page explaining what the previous label meant. According to Twitter, that label exists for “outlets where the state exercises control over editorial content through financial resources, direct or indirect political pressures, and/or control over production and distribution.”
That definition is vague enough that it’s impossible to say from the outside looking in whether or not it’s 100 percent accurate as it pertains to NPR. Strangely enough, the new label is actually less broad and thus potentially less accurate. Direct government funding only accounts for about one percent of the outlet’s annual budget, per NPR itself.
It’s a strange, evolving situation, as is just about everything else involving Musk’s ownership of Twitter.

MacBook Air With Slightly Smaller 13.4-Inch OLED Display Rumored
In a tweet shared with paid subscribers today, Young added that the MacBook Pro is unlikely to adopt an OLED display until 2026, when Apple’s supply chain is expected to have sufficient notebook-optimized OLED display production capacity. Until then, Young said suppliers will be focused on OLED displays for tablets, such as the iPad Pro.
In December, Young said Apple plans to launch the MacBook Air and 11.1-inch/13-inch iPad Pro models with OLED displays in 2024. Macs and iPads with OLED displays would feature increased brightness and improved contrast ratio compared to LCD models, and the displays would also be more power efficient for longer battery life.
It was reported earlier today that Samsung Display has started development of OLED displays that will be used in the future MacBook Air. In the meantime, Young expects Apple to release a larger 15-inch MacBook Air with an LCD panel this year.
Young has accurately leaked many display-related details about future Apple products, including ProMotion coming to the iPhone 13 Pro and MacBook Pro, the sixth-generation iPad mini featuring a larger 8.3-inch display, and much more.

The Wordle board game is fun for dedicated players, but slightly boring for others
I will admit, I was late to the Wordle craze. I obsessively play Wordscapes and Word Stacks, but something about seeing people tweet those little squares with their scores every day pissed me off to a point that I simply refused to play the game for a while. Being a hater is in my blood — I can’t help it.
Once my friends finally convinced me to give the game a try, I fully understood the hype. I spent hours playing the Wordle archive to make up for lost time. So, when I heard there would be a Wordle board game, I had to try it out.
The game released in October 2022 and retails for $19.99.
How do you even play Wordle IRL?
Each round of the game requires one player to be the host and come up with the secret word. The game comes with three whiteboards that look like the online Wordle grid, where other players write their guesses. The host then places green and yellow tiles on the letters guessed correctly, while leaving incorrect letters blank (instead of placing gray tiles, like in the virtual game).
It’s almost exactly like the online version of the game, just a little more manual. There aren’t any new elements or rules to the board game, which is good for die-hard Wordle fans.

Is playing Wordle in person actually fun?
The appeal of Wordle as a board game is that you get to make up your own words. You can play it safe with the included list of suggested words or get raunchy and make your friends guess some more adult words or inside jokes. It has the same sort of vibe as Telestrations but without any drawing.
Overall, the game was fun, but there were enough annoyances that I don’t know that I’d ever reach for Wordle over some of the other options in my game cabinet.
First of all, only four people can play the game at a time. My usual game night group consists of five people, so either someone sat out or we had a team of two on one of the boards. I wish this game were designed for at least six people.

Another issue was timing. One person might finish their guess a lot sooner than the others and move on to the next round. My friends and I had to make sure the host wasn’t putting tiles on anyone’s boards until everyone was on the same line. One of the great things about Wordle online is that there is no time limit so you don’t feel rushed. But I found myself wishing there were an included hourglass timer we could’ve used. Not having a time limit made the game stretch out and have boring moments of downtime for some players.
That said, it was really fun to choose a random word and see if my friends and I could get into each other’s minds to figure out what we came up with. Sometimes the words would be truly random and out there while other times it would be a callback to an earlier joke or conversation. It was also funny to watch us all struggle to remember what’s a real word and what’s not as we wrote our guesses.
The scorecard that comes with the game only has spaces for four rounds, and honestly, that’s all it needs. After each person had a turn at picking the word, we were all ready to be done playing and move on to the next game. It’s definitely a game that’s fun in short bursts.
Is the Wordle board game worth it?
If you’re an avid Wordle player, this is a really fun way to play with friends and get more than one word per day. As someone who petered out with the online version, I was not obsessed with the Wordle board game. But my friend, Nicole, who does still play every day, was very into the concept. So it really just depends on how much you love the original Wordle. I could also see the Wordle board game being more fun for elementary and middle school kids, or anyone trying to learn a new language.
The game only costs $20, so if it sounds even a little bit appealing, I’d give it a try. It might sit in the ranks with Codenames or Five Crowns for you.

Magic in Veil Of Dust doesn’t make life easy, just slightly less hard
Hot diggedy daffodil, am I glad I picked Casual difficulty in Veil Of Dust. Unlike some games, Veil Of Dust doesn’t make it sound like any sort of concession; the middle difficulty is called Challenge, and says “it’s pretty tough – you’ve been warned”. I took the warning seriously, and thank God, because even the easiest difficulty had me pouring dandelion tea down my brother’s throat like he was doing a kegstand (and in the game).
Áine and Shane are a pair of Irish siblings who’ve moved to Oregon to start a new life, which, in the main story, involves eating potatoes and trying not to get depressed. It’s difficult enough that I didn’t think I would like it at first, as even basic tasks deplete your stamina and sleeping in your 1860s hovel with a hole in the roof doesn’t restore very much per night. Áine can do spells, but they’re simple and only really take the edge off what is a very hard life. Magic isn’t a cure-all in Veil Of Dust, and using it has to be weighed up, just like everything else.
