Wellbeing company urges organisation leaders to start getting ready for the big changes in business and future of work.
How Moral Injury Is Damaging Organisations
Softer Success®, a leading wellbeing company that provides burnout solutions to organisations globally, has announced emerging trauma-infused workplace burnout trends revealed by qualitative and quantitative analysis.
Softer Success® together with Sheffield University and Affinity Health conducted innovative new research to assess the risk of moral injury in organisations and whether it can contribute to, and even cause burnout. The study, which looked at how morally injurious events affect people in the workplace and how moral injury can contribute to burnout, revealed that moral injury and moral stress is causing a more intense type of trauma-infused burnout in people across many business sectors, which is far more challenging for people to overcome.
The findings revealed that whilst participants’ experiences of moral stress differed in source, severity and length, in the vast majority of cases, people felt they had no other option but to resign from their jobs because of it. This highlights that it is not just the original transgression that causes the injury but also that the lack of validation and support from their workplace leaders or peers exacerbates it.
The Great Resignation
Potentially morally injurious events are events that challenge an individual’s moral beliefs. It happens when something happens in the workplace that goes against an individual’s values and beliefs. They can be directly experienced, witnessed or learned about such as: a colleague’s transgression or betrayal; unfair redundancy selection; failure to act upon a whistleblowing complaint; and leadership humiliation, manipulation or control.
This explains a contributing reason for the great resignation. People are leaving in their droves because their values, mission and purpose are no longer aligned with that of their organisations. In fact, there is a huge misalignment. By quickly recognising these trends, Softer Success® empowering organisations to take the steps towards a Work Reset Revolution – by helping companies tackle moral injury head on and identify the employees who are going to burnout before they do.
How To Address Burnout in the Workplace
“This study is a further sign that we need to change the way we work by addressing moral injury and burnout structurally,” said Cara de Lange, Founder of Softer Success®. “The solution to this is to continuously scientifically measure and assess the risk of moral injury and burnout. To future proof our businesses we need to rewire our brain to deal with ongoing uncertainty”
To help them address the structural procedures, policies, and ways of working that are stopping them from driving significant change, Softer Success® says organisations should start by taking a business wellbeing assessment to measure the risk of workplace burnout and toxicity. Then we offer a range of solutions and interventions to make
“Measuring burnout is a catalytic step in the Work Reset Revolution. Our online anonymous wellbeing assessment ‘A Walk Through the Forest’ assesses the level of workplace burnout and toxicity in 90 seconds,” said de Lange. “That is the first step , but then most importantly we provide a framework of solutions to dissolve the risk of burnout – for example amending company mission and purpose so it looks after employees wellbeing at highest level and adding wellbeing as a business goals.”
