Shortly before 11 a.m. local time, a black SUV crashed through the store’s glass facade at a high rate of speed and ended up at the back wall of the store, witnesses said. As of Monday afternoon, WCVB reported that one person has died and at least 19 people were taken by ambulance to area hospitals, with four of the victims in critical condition.
In a media briefing on Monday afternoon, local police and fire department officials said the driver of the vehicle is in police custody and there is an active criminal investigation, but they declined to provide further details at the time.
Update: Apple has issued the following statement to WCVB in response to the incident:
We are devastated by the shocking events at Apple Derby Street today and the tragic loss of a professional who was onsite supporting recent construction at the store. Our hearts go out to our team members and customers who were injured and all of those who were affected by this terrible incident.
