Alicia Keys and Beyonce are easily their generation’s top female R&B performers – critically and commercially.
Unfailingly waving the genre’s flag over the last two decades, the ladies are no strangers to breaking Billboard records in the name of the musical format – including each other’s.
In August 2020 (as we reported here), Keys blast past Beyonce to claim the title of “most-certified female R&B artist of the millennium” for U.S.-based sales that exceeded 27 million on the digital front and 20 million on the album sales front (at the time).
Just two years later, Bey snatched the title back when a whopping 65+ of her titles were upgraded at the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) – upping her Stateside-certified digital sales count to 113.5 million while her album sales sit at 29.5 million (as of time reported).
And because of the ongoing success of her seventh studio album ‘Renaissance,’ that isn’t the only Alicia record Bey conquered this month.
While sitting atop the Billboard Hot 100 with her latest single ‘Break My Soul,’ Beyonce also broke major ground on R&B charts – namely the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Hot R&B Songs, Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay charts as she’s currently listed at #1 on each.
The latter is of particular note as Bey – already the female singer with the most top 10 hits on this tally (32) – watched ‘Break’ ascend to its perch and mark her 9th reign there, breaking a tie with Alicia to claim the title as the chart’s sole Queen. Among all acts in the chart’s history, the 40-year-old diva is tied with Chris Brown and only surprassed by Drake (27) and Usher (15) for most #1s.
Here are the 9 songs of Bey’s to top the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay Charts.
- ‘Baby Boy’
- ‘Love on Top’
- ‘Drunk in Love’
- ‘Irreplaceable’
- ‘7/11’
- ‘Single Ladies’
- ‘Crazy in Love’
- ‘Savage’
- ‘Break My Soul’
The R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart ranks the top R&B and hip hop songs in the United States based on audience impressions from a panel of Urban and Urban adult comtemporary radio stations monitored by Nielsen.
