The RPS Advent Calendar 2022, December 17th
For day 17 of the RPS Advent Calendar this year, you’re feeling the need – the need for speed. There’s a beautiful load of levels to leap through out there, and if you can take out all the enemies in your way then so much the better.
Super Nintendo World will open its US doors on February 17th
Two years after Super Nintendo World’s opening in Osaka, Japan, its first American counterpart will arrive at Universal Studios Hollywood. Like the Japanese version, Hollywood’s Super Nintendo World is less of a self-contained theme park and more of a new area at Universal Studios. Roughly coinciding with the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the California “theme land” will open on February 17th, 2023.
Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge is the centerpiece attraction, an augmented reality-powered go-kart simulator inspired by Nintendo’s racing franchise. Attendees wear AR visors displaying an alternate digital world with fantastical racetracks, Koopa shells and familiar competitors, who you blast using your steering wheel trigger. Unfortunately, although Nintendo and Universal believe the attraction includes enough variety to invite repeat visits, it’s Super Nintendo World’s only proper ride at launch. (The Japan park only has one other ride, a slower-paced Yoshi adventure, which hasn’t been announced for the US.)
Beyond AR Mario Kart, the park invites you stimulate your senses and spend money. You can buy a Power-Up Band, which helps families keep score and unlock “extra-special interactions” with question-mark blocks and costumed characters. Additionally, if the ride’s AR visor wasn’t enough, you can pick up a pair of interactive binoculars to “discover a new dimension of Super Nintendo World.” You can buy lunch at Toadstool Cafe, where Chef Toad serves delicacies like Toadstool Cheesy Garlic Knots, Piranha Plant Caprese and the Mario Bacon Cheeseburger. And, of course, there’s the 1-Up Factory, a retail shop selling character hats and plush dolls.
Super Nintendo World is a collaboration between Nintendo and Universal Creative. Mario creator and Nintendo visionary Shigeru Miyamoto was instrumental in designing and constructing the original Japan park, which its Hollywood sibling largely mirrors. A second US park is in the works for Universal Studios Florida, which will open sometime down the road.
‘Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’ is a direct sequel to ‘Fallen Order’ arriving March 17th
The Game Awards is often full of surprise announcements and reveals but one thing we knew going into this year’s ceremony is that it would provide a first look at Star Wars Jedi: Survivor gameplay. The game takes place five years after the events of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Fittingly, the trailer shows an older and more rugged Cal Kestis, who’s now a Jedi Knight.
You’ll journey to new planets in the Star Wars galaxy, each of which has unique biomes and enemies. You’ll have fresh gear, skills and abilities at your disposal to help you survive these worlds. For one thing, Cal will be able to wield two lightsabers at once. He’ll also have an ascension cable for vertical traversal and the ability to tame and ride creatures.
The trailer for the next entry in Respawn’s Dark Souls-inspired series closed with a release date. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will arrive on current-gen systems on March 17th, adding another prominent title to what’s shaping up to be a busy first quarter for major game releases.
“As long as we fight, hope survives.
Experience the next chapter in Cal Kestis’ story. #StarWarsJediSurvivor is available March 17. Pre-orders will be available later tonight!” pic.twitter.com/A79FYy1SLo

The Settlers: New Allies has finally settled on a February 17th release date
It’s been a bumpy road, but the new generation of plucky Settlers are at last approaching their destination. Now known as The Settlers: New Allies, Ubisoft’s Settlers reboot is due to come out on February 23rd.
Katharine quite liked what she played of the town-building RTS last January, but the devs decided feedback from their closed beta meant the game warranted more time in the oven, and thus a third major postponement since the game’s original 2018 announcement. Come watch the trailer below to see what’s new.
It’s Mario Kart DS’ 17th anniversary, and Waluigi Pinball is still one of the best tracks in the series
It might make you shiver when I tell you that Mario Kart DS is the first way I experienced Mario Kart. I later visited the N64 version and (of course) would go on to frequent the Wii version, too. But Mario Kart DS will always have the most special place in my heart among them all.
Growing up, I did a lot of travelling between parents. I still do, but not as nearly as often as I should be. Anyway, you better believe that my Nintendo DS and trusty R4 card came everywhere with me – and what better to play during a long car journey than a racing game about fast cars and Nintendo superstars?
While I never had as much fun solo as I did racing against friends from school, I must’ve spent hours upon hours recording time trials over the years. I probably had a much better time back then than I do now, despite my obnoxious insistence that I will one day acquire the world record for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s Waluigi Pinball at 150cc. I will do it, and I won’t shut up about it. Watch this space. It’s only a matter of weeks. Or months. Or years.
