Honkai: Star Rail rekindles memories of absolutely banging PS2 RPGs
Are you, like me, a gross little nerd that’s still grumpy about turn-based JRPGs being slowly relegated to mid-budget or handheld titles after the PS2 glory days? Do you miss being rewarded for getting through a tough section with a pre-rendered cutscene? Do you wish the only exploration you had to worry about was picking the dead end at a junction in a corridor to find a treasure chest? Does the very thought of Final Fantasy 16’s complicated real-time combos and parries and blocks make your fingers hurt? Excellent news. HoYoverse has followed up its unimaginably successful Genshin Impact with one of the best turn-based JRPGs in a generation.
Honkai Star Rail is a lavishly produced, immaculately localised and perfectly designed celebration of each and every single aspect of the genre. It’s a blessedly linear, solidly written adventure through fantastical sci-fi locales filled with interesting characters and engaging boss battles. It’s refreshingly old-fashioned, and if you miss this sort of thing being done with this sort of scale and polish, it feels like a godsend.
The game has a set-up that lends itself to the somewhat episodic structure of classic JRPGs (wait, are we still calling them that?) that involve moving from town-to-town, and solving their local problems that all tie into a larger narrative. You are the latest passenger of the Astral Express, a cosmic passenger train locked on a never-ending odyssey across the stars. You have mysterious powers, a foggy memory, and an overwhelming impulse to fight evil. It’s some real bread-and-butter JRPG business, and if it’s the sort of thing you’ve been missing, it’s delicious. Each stop the Express makes means a new world with its own characters, aesthetic, and adventure.
I did a plus-size bikini haul in a size 16/18, people say I look “absolutely stunning”, I’m obsessed with the black one
A PLUS size woman has shared her bikini haul and people think she looks ‘stunning.’
The size 16/18 content creator found herself falling in love with the black swimsuit in the haul.
Chelsea Rockey (@chelslouuise_) shared the haul video with over 30,000 TikTok followers.
The mid-size fashion influencer shared her sizes for reference.
“Plus size girlies… I’ve found some gorgeous swimwear that caters for bigger girlies!” she said.
“I’m wearing a size XL and am a 16/18 for reference,” she said.
Chelsea quickly cycled through the multiple styles she picked up.
First, she tried on a simple black one-piece, and next, a white two-piece with large sunflowers.
For a little more stomach coverage, she tried on a navy-striped two-piece with high-waisted bottoms.
People took to the comments to share their thoughts on the swimsuits.
“Omg I love them all,” said one commenter.
“Girl crush all day everyday,” said another.
“The black swimsuit is LUSH,” said a third.
Chelsea agreed: “I am obsessed,” she said.
OpenAI CTO Says AI Systems Should ‘Absolutely’ Be Regulated
Murati specifically discussed OpenAI’s approach to AGI with “human-level capability.”
OpenAI’s specific vision around it is to build it safely and figure out how to build it in a way that’s aligned with human intentions, so that the AI systems are doing the things that we want them to do, and that it maximally benefits as many people out there as possible, ideally everyone.
Q: Is there a path between products like GPT-4 and AGI?
A: We’re far from the point of having a safe, reliable, aligned AGI system. Our path to getting there has a couple of important vectors. From a research standpoint, we’re trying to build systems that have a robust understanding of the world similarly to how we do as humans. Systems like GPT-3 initially were trained only on text data, but our world is not only made of text, so we have images as well and then we started introducing other modalities.
The other angle has been scaling these systems to increase their generality. With GPT-4, we’re dealing with a much more capable system, specifically from the angle of reasoning about things. This capability is key. If the model is smart enough to understand an ambiguous direction or a high-level direction, then you can figure out how to make it follow this direction. But if it doesn’t even understand that high-level goal or high-level direction, it’s much harder to align it. It’s not enough to build this technology in a vacuum in a lab. We really need this contact with reality, with the real world, to see where are the weaknesses, where are the breakage points, and try to do so in a way that’s controlled and low risk and get as much feedback as possible.
Q: What safety measures do you take?
A: We think about interventions at each stage. We redact certain data from the initial training on the model. With DALL-E, we wanted to reduce harmful bias issues we were seeing… In the model training, with ChatGPT in particular, we did reinforcement learning with human feedback to help the model get more aligned with human preferences. Basically what we’re trying to do is amplify what’s considered good behavior and then de-amplify what’s considered bad behavior.
One final quote from the interview: “Designing safety mechanisms in complex systems is hard… The safety mechanisms and coordination mechanisms in these AI systems and any complex technological system [are] difficult and require a lot of thought, exploration and coordination among players.”
