Kroger-Owned Grocery Store Chain Harris Teeter Begins Accepting Apple Pay
Apple Pay also started rolling out at some actual Kroger locations in Kentucky and Ohio earlier this month, as the company finally embraces NFC technology. Kroger was one of the largest Apple Pay holdouts in the U.S. since the service launched in 2014, alongside Walmart and The Home Depot, but it now accepts Apple Pay at some or all Kroger, Fred Meyer, Ralphs, QFC, King Soopers, and Harris Teeter locations across the country.
Apple Pay allows customers to tap to pay with an iPhone or Apple Watch at checkout, providing a convenient and secure payment method. Alongside Apple Pay, Kroger continues to offer its own service called Kroger Pay, which requires customers to scan a QR code at checkout to pay with a debit or credit card stored in the Kroger app.
Apple Pay was rolled out at all locations.

Kroger Begins Accepting Apple Pay After Years of Holding Out
It’s unclear how many Kroger locations are now accepting Apple Pay, or if NFC-based payments will be expanded to all of the over 1,200 grocery stores that operate under the namesake Kroger brand. We have reached out to a company spokesperson for comment and will update this story if we receive any additional information.
Kroger was one of the largest Apple Pay holdouts in the U.S. since the service launched in 2014, alongside Walmart, The Home Depot, and Lowe’s. Kroger did roll out Apple Pay at some of its other grocery chains in the past few years, including Ralphs in California, QFC in Washington and Oregon, and King Soopers in Colorado and Wyoming.
Kroger-owned chain Fred Meyer also recently started accepting Apple Pay at its stores in the Northwest, a spokesperson confirmed, while its North Carolina-based banner Harris Teeter tweeted it is “working towards accepting Apple Pay.”
In a press release last year, Apple said that Apple Pay was accepted at more than 90% of U.S. retailers, and Kroger is a significant addition. The company also continues to offer its own service called Kroger Pay, which requires customers to scan a QR code at checkout to pay with a debit or credit card stored in the Kroger app.

Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link is now accepting sign-ups for January beta test
Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was announced all the way back in April 2022, and will be a new mobile instalment for the series. Set in Scala ad Caelum, the game will fill out the gaps left in-between the stories of previous mobile entries to Kingdom Hearts, Union X and Dark Road.
Kingdom Hearts 4 was announced alongside the mobile game, obviously overshadowing it, and while we don’t yet have a release date for either, Missing-Link was initially said to start beta testing in winter this year. Alas, we’re well into winter, and we now finally have an update on the game of sorts.
Shared to the Twitter account for Kingdom Hearts Dark Road, game director and designer Tetsuya Nomura revealed on December 19 that recruitment for Kingom Hearts Missing-Link play tests has now started. Sign-ups to the beta test will be available up until December 26, leaving you a small window of just a few days to try your luck.
Live Activities on iOS 16.1: App Store Now Accepting Apps, Sports Scores via TV App Potentially Delayed
iOS 16.1 introduces support for Live Activities in third-party apps. The feature allows iPhone users to stay on top of real-time events, such as a sports game or a food delivery order, right on the Lock Screen or in the Dynamic Island.
Live Activities appear at the bottom of the Lock Screen on iPhone 13 models and earlier, as well as on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. On the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, Live Activities appear in the Dynamic Island when the device is unlocked, or on the Lock Screen when the device is locked or in always-on display mode.
Live Activities will also support sports scores via Apple’s TV app for select leagues, including the MLB for users in the U.S., Canada, Australia, U.K., Brazil, Mexico, Japan, and South Korea, along with the NBA and Premier League for users in the U.S. and Canada only. This feature was working in earlier iOS 16.1 betas, but reader Alec Cohen informed us that it is disabled in the iOS 16.1 Release Candidate, so this might not launch until later.
iOS 16.1 is expected to be released on October 24 alongside iPadOS 16.1 and macOS Ventura. The update will include iCloud Shared Photo Library, the ability to share keys in the Wallet app via apps like Messages and WhatsApp, an Apple Card savings account option, a Clean Energy Charging option in the United States, support for Matter accessories in the Home app, Apple Fitness+ workouts without an Apple Watch, and more.
Apple also opened App Store app submissions for macOS Ventura, watchOS 9.1, and tvOS 16.1.
