WSJ: Apple to Release iPhone Journaling App for Logging Daily Activities
From the paywalled report:
The software will compete in a category of so-called journaling apps, such as Day One, which lets users track and record their activities and thoughts. The new Apple product underscores the company’s growing interest in mental health.
The Apple journaling app, code-named Jurassic, is designed to help users keep track of their daily lives, according to the documents describing the software. The app will analyze the users’ behavior to determine what a typical day is like, including how much time is spent at home compared with elsewhere, and whether a certain day included something outside the norm, according to the documents.
Based on documents seen by WSJ, a personalization feature will highlight potential topics for users to write about, such as a workout, while the app will also offer “All Day People Discovery” to detect a user’s physical proximity to other people.
According to the report, Apple’s app will have the ability to gather much more user data than third-party journaling apps, and will have access to text messages and phone calls, but privacy and security will be central to the software’s design. The analysis of the user’s day will take place on-device, and journaling suggestions will remain in the system for four weeks, after which they will be removed.
It’s not known when the app will be released, but it could be announced as soon as WWDC in June, when iOS 17 is set to be previewed, and could be a feature of the new operating system. The documents seen by WSJ offered no indication as to whether Apple plans to charge for the journaling app. An Apple spokesperson declined to comment.

MLB App Now Supports Live Activities
On the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, scores can also be tracked through the Dynamic Island. After updating to the latest version of the app, users can choose the “Track” option from the list of games to add the up-to-date scoring to the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island.
Live Activities for MLB games was already offered through Apple’s own TV app, but until this week, the MLB app itself did not support the feature. Live Activities have been available for third-party apps since the October release of iOS 16.1. Given that the MLB partners with Apple for content, it is not clear why it took so long for the feature to be implemented.
The MLB app was updated for the 2023 season yesterday, and in addition to Live Activities support, the app now includes a new onboarding experience, a Watch tab with 24/7 programming available, 2023 team schedules and tickets, a refreshed standings page, and more.
The MLB app can be downloaded from the App Store for free, but unlocking all content will require a subscription. Access to every out-of-market game costs $24.99 per month or $150 for the year. [Direct Link]
Friday Night Baseball games will resume on Apple TV+ when the 2023 season begins. The first games are set to premiere on Friday, April 7, with the Texas Rangers playing the Chicago Cubs and the San Diego Padres playing the Atlanta Braves.

Uber Rides Now Easier to Track on iPhone’s Lock Screen and Dynamic Island as Live Activities Expands Worldwide
Live Activities is an iOS 16 feature that allows iPhone users to stay on top of real-time events right on the Lock Screen on all iPhones and in the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The feature will make it easier for iPhone users to track the live progress of an Uber ride at a glance without opening the app, including the latest ETA, the trip status, and the vehicle’s description and license plate number.
Apple announced that Uber would support Live Activities back at WWDC 2022, and the feature has been in testing in select countries since late last year. With the latest update to the Uber app, the feature is available around the world.
Live Activities will also be supported by the Uber Eats app for food deliveries “in the coming months,” according to a company spokesperson.
Other popular third-party apps that support Live Activities include Flighty for flight tracking, Citymapper for public transit, ParkMobile for parking, CARROT Weather for weather forecasts, and soon Google Maps for turn-by-turn navigation.
