He admitted: “I still wanted to be a coach, which remains for me the best part of the football business.
“One of the main reasons I turned down chances to go on Strictly Come Dancing – despite the money on offer being good – was because I was concerned about not being taken seriously as a football coach after it.”
The formidable centre-back, who won 66 caps for England, is still the only player to captain a team to three top titles in three different decades.
Dad-of-six Adams said of the dance challenge: “To say I’m excited is an understatement.

Speaking to The Mirror, she said: “I think my sister’s definitely orchestrating things for me. It all feels so serendipitous.

She recalled: “I really held Jenna back in freestyle disco-dancing. Even though I had pizzazz and something about me, back in the 90s if you were chubby you weren’t a dancer.
“My sister wasn’t like that and she was really good – but what it gave me was this real ease on stage which was really useful for stand-up.”
The sisters were very close and Jayde was devastated when Jenna suffered a seizure out of the blue in 2005.
It was then revealed she had a brain tumour, and six years later she passed away aged 28.

Jayde was the fifth celebrity to be announced for Strictly, and shared her excitement with fans.
She said: “Since I watched the first series in 2004, I feel like every step I’ve taken in my career over the last 11 years was to be on Strictly.
“I cannot begin to express the emotions I am feeling, this means so much to me and my family. I’ve always watched it, apart from a brief hiatus in 2011 as I was relentlessly gigging every weekend (to try and get on Strictly).
“I’ve been a massive fan of the show for years. I feel like I’m watching myself in a dream and I can’t believe I’ve manifested this. Holding this in has been torture for me!”
Strictly Come Dancing begins on Saturday, September 17 on BBC One.

Nicola Adams and Ella Baig reveal name of their new baby
STRICTLY star Nicola Adams and her model girlfriend Ella Baig have revealed the name of their first child.
The couple, who have been together for four years, welcomed the baby boy in July, a month before his due date.
Adams, who was the first woman to win a boxing Olympic gold medal, told Hello! magazine that her son being born is “the most amazing thing that’s ever happened” to her.
“I can’t even explain the feeling – I felt this instant love,” she added.
And she revealed his name – Taylor Nate Adams.
The couple’s journey to parenthood began in 2020 when they started IVF using Adams’ egg fertilised via a sperm donor who resembled Baig.

Baig carried the baby and gave birth on July 9 via caesarean section.
He weighed just 3lb 14oz at the time as he was born a month prematurely.
Baig recalled her shock when she woke up early on July 8 to find that her waters had broken and said that when she asked Adams to ring the hospital she replied: “Right – what’s their number?”
She also feels the baby has inherited Adams’ boxing spirit, saying: “I said he was a fighter when he was in my stomach and he’s definitely come out like that.”
“He’s progressing really fast. He’s trying to do things he shouldn’t be able to do yet – like holding his own bottle,” she added.
“On the day he was born, I had him on my chest and he threw his head back.”
The couple said they debated Taylor’s name until he was born, with Adams explaining: “We had a few names in mind because we wanted to see what he looked like first to see if the name suited him.
“We didn’t want to get stuck on one name and have to think of a new one if it didn’t work.”
They added that they are now looking forward to life as parents.
