Going to the movies is becoming a test of what you can afford
Back in the Great Depression of the 1930s, people found escape from the bad news of the day by going to the movies. In fact, I can’t count how many movies — Sullivan’s Travels, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Matinee, Cinema Paradiso, just to name a few — are about people going to the movies for entertainment and escape. People stood in line and rushed to get their favorite seats; first come, first served. You’re part of a couple who are both comfortably making six figures? You’re paying off a college loan or trying to make it on your Social Security benefits? Doesn’t matter. You’re entitled to the best seat you can wrangle.
Even when theaters began selling advance reservations, it was still first come, first served — if you wanted to see a…
I can finally afford to buy a headstone for my son after winning £35,000 on lottery – it means the world
A HEARTBROKEN dad who won £35,000 can finally afford to buy a headstone for his son who tragically passed away six years ago.
Adam Scaife lost his baby boy when he was just four days old, and has been trying to save for his memorial site ever since.
Adam Scaife, 48, was among six lottery winners on Saltburn Street to each land cheques for £30,000 and a £5,000 holiday prize[/caption]
The Hull dad also wants to start his own farm to help educate his children about food, animals and nature[/caption]
The 48-year-old is now able to purchase a headstone in memory of Adam, who was named after him.
Adam told HullLive: “We lost our son, Adam six years ago, who was a twin to our daughter Eve. We haven’t been able to afford to buy him a headstone or anything.
“The twins were born three and a half months premature, and Adam passed away after four days, and it was a really difficult time for all of us.
“We wanted a place that was special, and we have been saving a bit for a memorial but it’s really hard at the moment to actually keep your savings.
“But now with this, we can give him a place to rest, because we just couldn’t afford it.”
Adam’s postcode was announced as a winner on Tuesday, February 21 with People’s Postcode Lottery and moments after he was handed the huge cheques he shouted to his family: “We’re going to Disneyworld!”
The dad-of-two explained his family usually can’t afford to jet off anywhere because their wages go towards all the bills and day-to-day essentials.
Adam’s wife Dawn has also battle chronic back and hip pain after complications from the twin’s birth.
“It’ll be nice for her to sit down and relax on a beach and not have to worry about anything because she’s an absolutely unbelievable mother, so she needs it,” the caring husband added.
The Hull dad also wants to start his own farm to help educate his children about food, animals and nature – and hopes the £35,000 will help him on his way.
The ambitious 48-year-old had already secured an acre of land and two 40-foot containers before scooping the jackpot.
In a stroke of luck, Adam’s next-door neighbour, Donna Hall, also raked in £35,000.
The 45-year-old said she is now on the hunt for a new caravan and renovating her home.
Donna said: “It means the world; we can do so much with the money and more. I can get a top-of-the-range caravan.
“I can also go to Zanzibar. I’ve wanted to go there since we started going away, me and my partner – the beaches, everything, that’ll be lovely.”
Postcode Lottery ambassador Judie McCourt said: “A massive congratulations to our six lucky winners in Hull!
“It was so lovely to meet Adam and Donna and it was amazing to hear what a difference it will make to their lives.
“I hope they all enjoy celebrating tonight, spending the cash and have a great time on holiday.”
People’s Postcode Lottery costs £10 a month to play and participants play with their chosen postcode.
Everyday throughout the February draws, one postcode will be announced as a £30,000 prize winner.
All the players in the postcode will win £30,000 and an additional £5,000 for a holiday for every ticket they hold.
This comes as hundreds of Postcode Lottery winners celebrate their giant scoops across the country.
Lucky locals living in the AB24 1 postcode in Aberdeen were shocked when they bagged a five figure windfall.
Two neighbours won eye-watering jackpots after playing with the full winning postcode – 83-year-old Alexender Hardingham was handed over £730,000.
He said: “I can’t believe it, I thought I was just getting £5,000, as £5,000 would still be a lot to me, but this feels like a fairy tale, just like the movies.
“Believe you me. This has been a day and a half to me that I still can’t believe.”
Great-gran-of-two Tilly Adams, 70, also played with the full winning postcode and netted over £360,000.
Amazingly, the lucky pensioners were joined in their victories by 123 of their neighbours.
The locals each took home between £13,996 and £83,976 depending on the number of tickets played with.
