DOJ Offers $10 Million Reward for Info on Alleged Russian Ransomware Hacker
A Russian national has been charged for his alleged role in the cyberattacks against law enforcement, government agencies, hospitals, and schools. The U.S. Department of Justice unsealed two indictments on Tuesday against Mikhail Pavlovich Matveev, who is known online as Wazawaka, claiming he demanded a total of $400…
Alleged Russian Hacker Charged in $200 Million Ransomware Spree
Ransomware groups typically hack into computer networks and deploy malicious software that encrypts computers and makes them unusable. The groups demand extortion payments in cryptocurrency and threaten to leak stolen data online if the ransom is not paid.
Matveev was allegedly a member of the Lockbit, Babuk and Hive ransomware gangs. Those groups are “ranked among the most active and destructive cybercriminal threats in the world,” Philip Sellinger, the US attorney for the district of New Jersey, wrote in an indictment. Matveev, along with other members of the ransomware gangs, attacked as many as 2,800 victims in the US and around the world, Sellinger wrote. The alleged victims include the Metropolitan Police Department in the District of Columbia, which was attacked with ransomware in 2021. The hackers proceeded to publish dozens of stolen personnel files. The groups also targeted churches and nonprofits, the Department of Justice said.

France Investigating Apple Over Alleged ‘Planned Obsolescence’ Arising From Serialized Repair Parts
Apple’s self-service repair program requires customers to enter a device’s serial number when ordering parts for devices like iPhones and Macs, and any parts ordered need to be paired with the same device after installation. HOP said this policy gives Apple the potential to restrict repairs to approved technicians only, and limit the functionality of devices repaired with uncertified parts. The organization added that Apple’s self-service repair program is bad for the environment given that Apple ships large and heavy tools to customers.
Do-it-yourself repair website iFixit also expressed disappointment about the serial number requirement when Apple’s program launched last year.
“Integrating a serial number check into their checkout process is a dire omen and could allow Apple the power to block even more repairs in the future,” said iFixit’s Elizabeth Chamberlain. “Building the technology to provision individual repairs easily sets Apple up as the gateway to approve—or deny—any repairs in the future, with parts from any source.”
The Paris Public Prosecutor’s office is handling the investigation, and has yet to formally accuse Apple of any wrongdoing in relation to HOP’s complaint. The organization previously filed a complaint about Apple throttling the maximum performance of some older iPhone models with aging batteries when necessary in order to prevent the devices from unexpectedly shutting down, leading to a €25 million fine in France.

Turkish Presidential Candidate Quits Race After Release of Alleged Deepfake
The former school headteacher and longtime member of the Republican People’s party (CHP) said an alleged sex tape circulating online was a deepfake, using footage taken from “an Israeli porn site.” He added: “If I had such images of myself, they were taken secretly in the past. But I do not have such an image, no such sound recording. This is not my private life, it’s slander. It’s not real.”
The high-profile deployment of deepfake videos has already hit Turkey’s 45-day election cycle, after Erdogan played an alleged deepfake that claimed to show banned Kurdish militants declaring their support for Kilicdaroglu at a pre-election rally last weekend. “What I have seen in these last 45 days, I have not seen in 45 years,” said Ince.

Nurse Lucy Letby revealed she was ‘stunned’ at death of her first alleged victim
MURDER accused nurse Lucy Letby yesterday told a court she was “stunned” at the death of her first alleged victim.
Letby gave evidence for a second day in her trial where she is accused of killing seven babies and attempting to murder ten more.
She was asked how she felt after the collapse and death of Child A, a premature twin boy, shortly after a night shift started.
Letby, 33, who worked on the neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital in the city, said: “Stunned. It was a complete shock to all of us.
“I felt like we had walked through the doors into this awful situation. The first time I had met (Child A), the first time I had met his parents. It was a huge shock.”
Defence barrister Ben Myers KC said: “It is alleged, of course, that you did this. Did you?”
Letby said: “No.” Mr Myers then asked at Manchester crown court: “What’s it like to have that allegation made?”
Letby said: “It’s awful. I was not even supposed to be working that night. It was just a shock to walk into that situation.”
She added: “You never forget something like that.”
Letby, of Hereford, denies all the charges, which span from June 2015 to June 2016.
The trial continues.
Alleged iOS 17 Wallet and Health App Redesigns Shown Off in Mockups
In the Wallet app mockup, there’s a navigation bar at the bottom that separates the different functions available in the app. Cards, Cash, Keys, IDs, and Orders are listed categories. Note that this is a mockup, so the “ID’s” spelling is likely an oversight. There’s also a “Passes & More” tab, and the leaker claims there are other features coming as well.
Users will reportedly be able to swipe down to access a search interface to find a specific card or pass, and there’s a “Transactions” button. Compared to the current Wallet app design, this would be a functional improvement because it would make finding certain features like specific passes and order details simpler. It would not be a surprise to see a design like this given the many functions the Wallet app now serves in addition to storing credit and debit cards.
As for the Health app, Analyst941 claims that the “Favorites” section under “Summary” will see a redesign with a card-style interface. Each card will have “visual data” that includes “colored graphs,” “tables,” and other information. Since the Summary tab in the Health app also includes Trends and Highlights, it is not clear how the card design for Favorites would work with those sections.
Analyst941 leaked accurate information about the iPhone 14 Pro‘s Dynamic Island ahead of its launch last year, but this leaker does not have a long-term track record as of yet and the information shared should be viewed with some skepticism in light of that.
Analyst941 has shared a number of rumors about features coming in iOS 17 in recent weeks, suggesting that there’s a “special” version of iOS 17 in the works for a 14.1-inch iPad and that iPads will get iPhone-style Lock Screen customization, plus they have mentioned vague changes coming to Search, the Dynamic Island, Control Center, and more. They have also made claims about a new watchOS 10 Home Screen layout and have said that in the future, the Apple Watch will be able to pair with multiple devices, including the iPad and Mac.
It’s worth noting that Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman has expressed doubt about Analyst941’s claims and believes that some of the information is inaccurate. We’ll know more about Analyst941’s accuracy in just over a month when Apple unveils iOS 17, watchOS 10, and other updates at the June 5 WWDC keynote.
Regardless of whether these mockups are accurate, there are other reliable rumors suggesting updates for the Health and Wallet apps. On the MacRumors podcast, Gurman confirmed that Apple is working on updates to the Wallet app, and he also recently said that Apple is working on new features for the Health app such as an expansion to the iPad and a mood tracking feature.
