A new promo video for Amazon’s big budget The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power TV show dropped this week and, my goodness, did the internet have jokes. Now, to be clear, this video is neither the opening credits of the show, as some folks thought, nor is it an official trailer.
It’s a mash-up of images from a promo with Entertainment Weekly. In fact, the video sits atop an in-depth EW story about the ambitious fantasy show. But that didn’t stop folks from posting sarcastic comments on Twitter about the video.
Though the post wasn’t from the show itself, there is plenty to laugh about. It’s quite strange to see what amounts to a mash-up of GIFs of actors in full LOTR garb making knowing glances, over-wrought reactions, and other vague capital-A-Acting expressions.
One person noticed a stunning similarity to a joke in Community.
People also set the video to different theme songs, ranging from the internet-famous Too Many Cooks, to Australian sitcom Kath & Kim, and soap opera The Young and the Restless.
Then there were memes and jokes. Lots of memes and jokes.
Of course, there were also lots of folks correctly noting that the video was neither the opening credits nor a trailer for the show.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premieres globally on Friday, but those in the U.S. will be able to watch it on Amazon Prime Video at 9 p.m. E.T. Despite the memes, you might want to give it a watch. Mashable’s Belen Edwards called the show a “stunning, meticulously crafted love letter to J.R.R. Tolkien and Middle-earth.”
The internet, however, welcomed the new show with anything but love.
Anker chargers aren’t the only thing on sale at Amazon this weekend. The retailer has also discounted the Echo Show 10. After a 20 percent price drop, the device is $200, down from $250. Both the Charcoal and Glacier White colors are included in the company’s latest promotion. We saw Amazon discount the Echo Show 10 to $180 during Prime Day in July, making this the best price we’ve seen since then.
Buy Echo Show 10 at Amazon – $200
Alongside the Echo Show 15, The Echo Show 10 is one of the more unusual products in Amazon’s smart display lineup. Engadget awarded the device a score of 83 in 2021. The rotating screen is an interesting feature that can make it easier to glance at information and participate in video calls while completing other tasks. It also sounds and looks great, and can double as a security camera. However, the problem with the Echo Show 10 is that it’s significantly more expensive than the Echo Show 8. When they’re not on sale, the former is double the price of its more affordable sibling. The Echo Show 10 also takes up more counter space. Amazon’s latest sale won’t help with that last point but a $50 discount does make it a more reasonable purchase.

Amazon is launching a new tool called Alexa Game Control that’s designed to let gamers use natural language voice commands so they can accomplish actions in video games. The first game to feature the technology will be the zombie-filled Dead Island 2, which was just re-revealed at Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event.
With Alexa Game Control, Amazon says you’ll be able to do things like interact with NPCs and switch weapons just by using your voice. You won’t need to use a wake word like “Alexa” or even have one of Amazon’s Echo devices, and the company says that the feature will work with “any microphone or headset connected to their PC or console.” However, you will be able to use Alexa features like controlling smart home devices and…

SAVE 45%: A solid budget-friendly pick for Amazon devotees, the Fire HD 8 Plus tablet is on sale for only $59.99 as of August 22. That’s $50 off its usual $109.99 MSRP.
The iPad is not the only tablet in town. If you’re an Amazon devotee, consider the Fire HD 8 Plus instead. It plays well with other Amazon services and it’s much easier on your wallet — especially on sale.
As of August 22, you can scoop up the Fire HD 8 Plus tablet for just $59.99 at Amazon. That’s 45% off its regular price of $109.99.
The Fire HD 8 Plus works best as a pure streaming and Kindle machine. It’s about the same size as an iPad mini with an eight-inch 1280 x 800 screen, and it supports Amazon’s Appstore. (It doesn’t support Google Play or Apple’s App Store.) According to Mashable tech reporter Alex Perry, it doesn’t exactly play well with third-party apps, and its overall performance is relatively weak. But if you rely on Amazon for literature, entertainment, and retail, it performs respectably.
You’ll get up to a half a day of battery life, which is certainly enough to read, stream, and shop to your heart’s content. The HD 8 Plus supports wireless charging (unlike its non-plus sibling) and has an upgraded 3GB of RAM. Otherwise, the HD 8 and HD 8 Plus are identical.
One feature we do particularly like about Fire tablets: You can use them hands-free with Alexa. Even if it’s asleep, the HD 8 Plus will recognize your voice instructions — tell it to pull up recipes, stream A League of Their Own, play your morning playlist, video-chat your mom, and more.
Images of Amazon’s Fallout production set have leaked online.
The images are said to have come from the in-production Fallout TV series in development for Amazon and appear to show the interior of Vault 32.
Originally posted to the Fallout subreddit before being deleted, the images show a nursery, conference room, a delapidated farm, and a Vault Boy poster (thanks, RPS).
