Qbits 30 Meters Apart Maintain Entanglement Across Refrigeration Systems
The experiment wasn’t the first to show that local realism isn’t how the Universe works — it’s not even the first to do so with qubits. But it’s the first to separate the qubits by enough distance to ensure that light isn’t fast enough to travel between them while measurements are made. And it did so by cooling a 30-meter-long aluminum wire to just a few milliKelvin. Because the qubits are so easy to control, the experiment provides a new precision to these sorts of measurements.
And the hardware setup may be essential for future quantum computing efforts… Everyone working with superconducting qubits says that we will ultimately need to integrate thousands of them into a single quantum computer. Unfortunately, each of these qubits requires a considerable amount of space on a chip, meaning it gets difficult to make chips with more than a few hundred of them. So major players like Google and IBM ultimately plan to link multiple chips into a single computer (something the startup Rigetti is already doing).
For tens of thousands of qubits, however, we’re almost certainly going to need so many chips that it gets difficult to keep them all in a single bit of cooling hardware. This means we’re going to eventually want to link chips in different refrigeration systems — exactly what was demonstrated here. So this is an important demonstration that we can, in fact, link qubits across these sorts of systems.
Or, as long-time slashdot reader nounderscores puts it, “Imagine a beowulf cluster of these.
“The Qbits that Simon Storz et al at ETH Zurich entangled at the ends of 30m of cryogenically chilled wire not only put the last nail into the coffin of hidden variable theory by being so far apart, they also allow quantum computing to scale to multiple refrigeration systems.”

May’s PS Plus Extra and Premium lineup includes ‘Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’
Last Friday was the final day for PS5 owners to claim Sony’s PlayStation Plus Collection, a bundle that came with nearly 20 free games, including Bloodborne and God of War (2018). When Sony announced at the start of February the collection was going away, the company said it would instead focus on growing the PlayStation Plus library of monthly games. Unsurprisingly then, May’s PS Plus lineup is chockful of titles you can download to your console, provided you subscribe to PS Plus Extra or Premium. In all, Sony will add 19 titles to the service this month.

Horrifying moment man plunges down ravine while being spun around in ‘astronaut training chair’ after it falls apart
THIS is the terrifying moment a man plunged down a ravine while being spun around on a rickety “‘astronaut training chair”.
The squeals of excitement from onlookers soon turned to screams of terror as the bloke tumbled off the cliff edge in Ayacucho, Peru.
The man was seen grimacing as two operators sent him into a stomach-churning spin[/caption]

In the footage, he is seen strapped into the dodgy contraption at the Cabrapata viewing point which boasts panoramic views of the city.
Two operators grab onto the chair every few seconds to send it into another stomach-churning spin as the crowd watches intently.
Bystanders can be heard laughing in delight as their pal flies in different directions on the chair, which is propped up by two metal posts.
But after 20 seconds of rotating, the frame began to buckle under the pressure and suddenly fell off without warning down the ravine.
The daredevil was still strapped into the DIY space simulator as he horrifyingly slipped away in front of his pals.
A shocked friend filming the stunt let out a blood-curdling scream, just moments after they were revelling at the man’s terror.
Miraculously, the bloke somehow cheated death and survived the spectacular fall.
It is thought that the frail frame that wobbled off the cliff edge saved his life, as he was strapped in to protect his head.
The thrill seeker was rushed to hospital after his near-fatal pursuit of fun, but is said to now be recovering well.
The chair is a budget version of the state-of-the-art Multi Axis Trainer used by space agencies to teach astronauts how to survive high-speed spins in weightless conditions.
The cliffside viewing point that the device was situated on is popular with tourists thanks to its spectacular views.
Extreme rides and walkways have sprung up at the beauty spot as people look to cash in on adventurous tourists who expect theme park safety standards.
Officials are now cracking down on all of them over safety fears and have closed them all pending safety checks, local media reports.
