Netflix Claims Password-Sharing Rules Won’t Apply To US Yet, Were Posted By Mistake
Netflix’s divisive password-sharing crackdown policies are apparently not coming to the US just yet, despite a comprehensive breakdown of rules that were posted to its member Help Center FAQ earlier this week. According to comments a spokesperson provided to The Streamable, those policies were posted by mistake.
“For a brief time, a help center article containing information that is only applicable to Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru, went live in other countries,” the spokesperson told The Streamable. “We have since updated it.”
What a spokesperson wouldn’t be free to say is that perhaps the policies–which included a mandatory account check-in every 31 days, among other new rules–were posted deliberately to gauge reactions. Unsurprisingly, the sudden rollout of these rules were met with significant pushback from customers. For example, many criticized the requirement for traveling customers to request and subsequently secure a temporary code from the service, which would only grant access to an account for seven consecutive days.
Thousands of households have weeks left to apply for £85 payment to help with rising costs
THOUSANDS of hard-up households can get up to £85 in cash to help with the cost of living.
The help is being dished out under the new round of £421million funding given by the government to the Household Support Fund.
Councils have been given a slice of the new funding on offer, which will be given out to struggling households to help them with the rising cost of bills and food.
Each council gets a different portion of funding depending on the size of the catchment area, population, and need.
The vouchers or grants on offer vary by location so you’ll have to check to see what you can get and how your council will pay you.
You’ll usually need to be on a low income to receive the help.
Bedford Borough Council is giving out £85 free cash to spend on energy and water bills as well as food.
More than 50% of the funding will go to families with children who qualify for free school meals – though many more will qualify.
The amount you will receive depends on your circumstances.
For example, pensioners entitled to 100% council tax support will get £85 while pensioners entitled to less will be given £50.
Then, households entitled to 100% council tax support will get £85 while those who qualify for less will receive £50.
Applicants must be over the age of 18, have recourse to public funds, live in the area and be struggling with costs of the above.
They must also receive Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction but not receiving any of the following benefits:
- Pension Credits
- Universal Credit
- Child Tax Credits
- Working Tax Credits
- Income Support
- Income Related Employment and Support Allowance
- Income Based Jobseeker’s Allowance.
The cash will be dished out to eligible families directly into their bank accounts.
Only one application per household is allowed during the lifetime of the scheme.
You’ll need to be quick as the deadline to apply is February 28.
You can apply for the cash via the council’s website, you’ll need to use a passcode which you should have received in a letter about the scheme.
Other councils such as Runnymede in Surrey are also offering cash payments of up to £800 to residents.
While Hastings Borough Council is offering residents £250.
Make sure to keep an eye on your council’s website for updates about the scheme.
Can I get help if I don’t live in Bedford?
Yes – you can still get help under the Household Support Fund.
What support you can get will vary, because each council is in charge of how to spend the funding available.
Some decide to dish the help out automatically, while you’ll need to apply in other cases.
Some councils choose to distribute funding in the form of vouchers, while others give out cash payments.
To get more information on what support is available, and how to get it, you’ll need to contact your local council.
You can find yours using the gov.uk council checker tool.
What can I get?
Councils decide how to distribute their funding.
But in the last round of funding, you could get up to £250 in free cash support from some councils – like Rother in Sussex.
For example, thousands of residents in Luton are due electronic vouchers to help pay for food and other household essentials.
North Yorkshire council is giving out £325 help for struggling households.
Check your local council to see what it’s offering.

CES 2023: L’Oréal is helping those with limited mobility apply lipstick
At CES 2023, L’Oréal unveiled two new devices that solve some very different problems.
HAPTA is a machine that helps people with limited hand and arm mobility apply lipstick, and L’Oréal Brow Magic is an electronic eyebrow makeup applicator that gives you customized brow looks in seconds.
Guive Balooch, the lead innovator and head of L’Oréal’s technology incubator, told Mashable at CES 2023 that the HAPTA machine is comparable to the spoons that help people with limited mobility eat on their own.
“People that could never eat on their own, could eat on their own,” Balooch said. “And their community [wanted] something similar to use for makeup. A lot of times in my career, I’ve done things that push, but this one was really pull.”
HAPTA is a handheld smart makeup applicator that offers people who live with limited fine motor skills the ability to steadily apply lipstick at home by using technology created by Verily Life Sciences. It works by combining motion controls and customizable attachments to stabilize and level the lipstick itself as the user brings it closer to their mouth. HAPTA — which was piloted with L’Oréal-owned Lancôme — comes with a magnetic attachment, a built-in battery, and the ability for the user to rotate the lipstick 360 degrees.
“For L’Oréal, the future of beauty is inclusive. And this future will be made more accessible by technology,” Nicolas Hieronimus, the CEO of the L’Oréal Groupe, said in a press release. “The two consumer technologies we are unveiling this year at CES represent the true purpose of our company: to create the beauty that moves the world.”

L’Oréal also introduced Brow Magic at CES 2023, a beautiful and innovative product that involves quite a different set of technology than the HAPTA. Brow Magic, developed by L’Oréal and Prinker, is a handheld device that uses AI to give you the perfect brow. You use it by scanning your face on the L’Oréal Brow Magic app, choosing the shape, thickness, and effect of the brow you’d like, brushing L’Oréal Brow Magic primer over your eyebrows, moving the device across your skin, and then applying a top coat to finish it all off. It has two conical elements — one you hold and the other you press to your face — which use 2,400 tiny nozzles to print eyebrows onto you in a matter of seconds. They’re essentially non-permanent tattoos that you can remove after a day or two with makeup remover.
Both HAPTA and Brow Magic are expected to launch in 2023.
