Elon Musk is entering the world of artificial intelligence
The middle section of a Venn diagram between guys who like Elon Musk and guys who are really into artificial intelligence sounds like a nightmarish grouping of fellas. And that nightmare squad is having a really nice time.
According to The Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times, Musk is planning to launch a new generative AI start-up to compete with ChatGPT’s OpenAI and has called it X.AI Corp. This is notably not a name for one of his children, although it would be reasonable to confuse it as one. Musk is the sole director of the company, and he is also buying thousands of Nvidia GPU processors — processors essential for AI tech building, the Financial Times reports.
The Twitter tzar has been critical of AI despite having co-founded OpenAI before leaving the company a decade ago. Musk is also buying 10,000 of Nvidia GPU processors, which are essential tech for building an AI that can rival ChatGPT, the Financial Times reports, and he’s hired two former DeepMind researchers who will allegedly work on the project.
This comes just weeks after he signed an open letter saying that training powerful AI systems should be halted for at least six months.
“AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity,” the letter reads.
In response, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said: “I think moving with caution and an increasing rigor for safety issues is really important. The letter I don’t think was the optimal way to address it.”
The Wall Street Journal reported that Musks thinks ChatGPT is politically biased and is planning to use X.AI Corp to create an AI model that is “truth-seeking.”
Whatever that means.
Elon Musk quietly starts X.AI, a new artificial intelligence company to challenge OpenAI
Elon Musk Founds a New Artificial Intelligence Company Named X.AI
Elon Musk has created a new company dedicated to artificial intelligence — and it’s called X.AI, as first reported by The Wall Street Journal. The company, which a Nevada filing indicates was incorporated last month, currently has Musk as its director and Jared Birchall, the director of Musk’s family office, listed as its secretary. The filing, which The Verge has also obtained, indicates that Musk incorporated the business on March 9th, 2023.
Rumors about Musk starting up an AI company have been floating around for days, with a report from Business Insider revealing that Musk had purchased thousands of graphic processing units (GPUs) to power an upcoming generative AI product. The Financial Times similarly reported that Musk planned to create an AI firm to compete with the Microsoft-backed OpenAI. Musk even reportedly sought funding from SpaceX and Tesla investors to get the company started.

Elon Musk has created his own artificial intelligence company
Elon Musk, who’s been vocally critical about artificial intelligence lately, seems to be planning something AI related. According to The Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times, Musk has founded a new artificial intelligence company called X.AI Corp. Based on a state filing from last month that the sources have viewed, the new company is incorporated in Nevada and lists Musk as the sole director, as well as Jared Birchall, the director of his family’s offices, as the secretary. The multi-company executive is known to have a special affinity for the letter ”X” and has even recently renamed Twitter, Inc. as X Corp.
Musk is no stranger to AI projects. He co-founded OpenAI before leaving the company almost a decade ago. After ChatGPT’s meteoric rise in popularity, though, Musk advocated for the technology’s regulation and signed an open letter that urged tech leaders to put a six-month pause on its development. The Journal says Musk thought ChatGPT was politically biased — he once commented on the “danger of training AI to be woke” — and that he’s looking create AI models that are “truth-seeking.”
At this point, though, Musk’s plans for X.AI Corp and whether he’s looking to build a veritable ChatGPT rival remains unclear. While details are still scarce, previous reports provide clues on how Musk’s AI efforts are progressing. He reportedly hired two former DeepMind researchers in March, including scientist Igor Babuschkin, who’s believed to be helming the new project. Musk also reportedly purchased 10,000 GPUs for AI development at one of Twitter’s data centers. In addition, according to The Times, he’s already in talks with Tesla and SpaceX investors to put money into his new venture.
