With Baldur’s Gate 3 heading to PS5, could it be a bigger deal than Starfield?

Could Baldur’s Gate 3 be bigger than Starfield? It seems like an absurd proposition. Bethesda, after all, are giants of the RPG world. Skyrim is probably, arguably, the most successful role-playing video game to date, and Starfield promises to be Skyrim in Space. Word of a release date is, naturally, awaited with bated breath. There probably won’t be a more significant release this year. Assuming it’s still coming this year: the radio silence on that front has been deafening, although there are rumours that a Starfield focused showcase is imminent.
But consider: there was a time when the idea that CD Projekt RED could challenge the might of Bioware and Bethesda in terms of cultural impact or Business Done would have seemed daft. But The Witcher 3 is probably on a par with Skyrim in terms of critical, cultural, and financial success. It catapulted a niche series of Polish fantasy novels – popular in their home country but fairly unknown elsewhere – to huge international success, with a Netflix series and everything.
Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t a PS5 console exclusive because it’s also in the works for Xbox

Larian Studios has put Xbox Series X/S users at ease by announcing that Baldur’s Gate 3 is in the works for Xbox, as the game is not a platform exclusive.
This is according to Larian’s community manager, who said the development team has run into a few technical issues with the Xbox Series X/S version, particularly with the split-screen co-op.
When the release date for the RPG was announced earlier this week, alongside the PS5 version, it was thought the lack of an Xbox Series X/S announcement meant the game was a console exclusive. Again, that is not the case whatsoever, according to the developer.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Is In Development For Xbox, But There’s A Series S Snag
Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t avoiding Xbox Series X|S because of a console exclusivity deal with Sony for PlayStation 5. Instead, the Xbox omission stems from a developmental issue regarding split-screen support on Series S.
Developer Larian Studios cleared the air about Baldur’s Gate 3 on consoles after the RPG was unveiled it’s heading to PS5 during Sony’s State of Play event yesterday. “We’ve had an Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 in development for some time now,” Larian Studios said in a statement.
“We’ve run into some technical issues in developing the Xbox port that have stopped us feeling 100% confident in announcing it until we’re certain we’ve found the right solutions–specifically, we’ve been unable to get splitscreen co-op to work to the same standard on both Xbox Series X and S, which is a requirement for us to ship.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 is out on August 31st – with an iconic villain voice actor

I am extremely sympathetic to professionals complaining about celebritites horning in on their turf, but I will make an exception in the case of J.K. Simmons voicing video game villains. Portal’s Cave Johnson remains one of the greatest turns in video game voice acting history, and we can now look forwards to Simmons playing a well evil, invincible necromancer in Larian Studios’ RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 – which, incidentally, is releasing into 1.0 form on August 31st. Fair play to ’em: they said August, and August it is. A new trailer featuring Simmons’ character Kehteric Thorm, and the release date, was showcased at Sony’s State Of Play event last night.
