I’m a 63-year-old bodybuilder – here’s my secret to losing weight healthily…. it’s easier than you think
A CHAMPION bodybuilder has revealed the secret to losing weight in a healthy way.
Lee Haney – who held the title of Mr Olympia on a staggering eight occasions – took to Instagram to reveal the sought-after trick.

Sending out a promotional post for his self-help fitness book ‘Fit at Any Age’, the 63-year-old addressed his 274k followers.
He said: “The key to losing weight is to make sure your body is in a calorie deficit versus a surplus in calories being consumed.”
Fondly known as Hercules, Lee was one of bodybuilding’s most decorated athletes.
He won every Mr Olympia competition from 1984-1991, breaking Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s record of seven in a row.
A consummate professional, the former Mr Olympia harnessed his remarkable talent to a phenomenal work ethic – and would obsess about improving his previous performances.
He revealed: “When you’re on top, there is nowhere to go but down,” Haney said during an interview with the founder and CEO of Labrada Nutrition, Lee Labrada.
“The pressure of how do I stay here, what can I do differently to bring about a better package than the last time.”
Despite the former champion’s advice, it is worth mentioning that this is not a one-size-fits-all approach.
In one of the most detailed clinical trials published by the National Library of Medicine, researchers found that how much weight the participants lost on different diets varied greatly, and some even put on weight.
It comes after personal trainer and fat loss specialist Emily Servante echoed Lee’s fitness advice.
Pushing a less is more approach to shifting the pounds, Emily said: “In actual fact, the fundamental science of fat loss is pretty straightforward.
“Eat less, exercise more, and create a consistent calorie deficit and you will lose fat. Simple.
“Unfortunately, whilst the science may be simple, actually putting it in practice is hard work.”
The PT compiled a list of tips and tricks to maintain a healthy weight.
I’m still a bodybuilder at 72 but I’m as fit as any 30-year-old – my secret is all in what I eat for breakfast
WHEN it comes to age, it’s just a number for this bodybuilder, who says he’s worked out every day for decades.
Xinmin Yang looks better than most 30-year-olds, which is why it is a shock to many when they find out he’s 72 years old.
Xinmin Yang says he looks better than people more than half his age and says all it takes is hard work and discipline[/caption]
He can squat over 370 pounds and has the bone density of a younger man, according to his doctor.
Xinmin cites his physique to his strict regimen of exercising daily and following his diet plan that includes six-to-eight eggs for breakfast.
He started bodybuilding in 1984 – just one year after China lifted the ban on the sport that was introduced to the country in 1953.
In the nearly 40 years since Xinmin has been in top physical condition – with normal blood pressure and normal blood lipids.
“The first thing my doctor said was ‘you don’t look a day over 60,’” Xinmin told Chinese fitness media company Change Production in 2018.
“Over the years, I have lived a healthy life because of bodybuilding training,” he said.
Aside from all the eggs he eats, Xinmin’s breakfast also includes “tomatoes, cucumber, oatmeal…and some chicken breast.”
“I’ve been eating like this for almost 10 years,” he said.
Throughout his career, Xinmin has won more than 100 trophies and medals and calls Arnold Schwarzenegger his biggest inspiration.
“My body shape, muscle strength, and power are better than most young people even though I’m [into my 70s] now,” he said.
Xinmin calls exercise the most important part of his life and, although being a champion isn’t his goal anymore, he hopes to maintain his healthy lifestyle.
Some of his secrets to his agelessness include going for a jog every morning followed by strength training for an hour and a half each day.
“When strength training, remember three things,” said Xinmin. “Make sure the movements are standard. Build muscle and shed fat. Try and improve your balance.”
Xinmin says that self-discipline and persistence are also key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
“To maintain my health and body status at my age could only be by the accumulations of years and years of daily workouts.”
His dedication has earned him the name “Iron Grandpa” in the online bodybuilding community.
“Mark my words, I will still be training at 80. Let’s make it 80,” said Xinmin.
“I want to push the limits of the human body.”

I’m an 80-year-old bodybuilder – I look unrecognisable in throwback pic from my heyday… but I’m still working out now
FEW people maintain gruelling exercise routines as they hit 80, but legendary veteran bodybuilder Frank Zane does.
The 80-year-old shared a picture of his sun-soaked and muscle-clad younger self, while still vowing to not let old age get in the way of his training.
The throwback picture is taken around the time the champ was winning Mr Olympia titles in the late 70s[/caption]
At 80, Zane still keeps up with his serious fitness routines[/caption]
The former bodybuilding champ has been looking back on his glory days to encourage others to stay motivated.
In an Instagram post, alongside a picture from his heyday, he wrote: “A lot of guys have better genes but if you work hard and consistently, you can outperform them.”
The tactic has clearly worked for Zane, who won the esteemed Mr Olympia and Mr Universe titles three times each.
Through his 50 year-long career, he has worked alongside other legends in the business, including Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Zane is one of only three in the world to have defeated Schwarzenegger in professional bodybuilding.
The veteran muscleman has achieved a highly coveted spot in the “Top 10 Legends of Bodybuilding” and a rightful space in the Bodybuilding Hall of Fame.
Now, he is often found sharing his wisdom online and acting as a performance coach for millions.
Recently, he shared that a secret to his success is focusing “on the quality of your sets instead of weight and number of reps”.
He also encouraged his followers to “never work to failure but success, striving to perform the last repetition in a set with perfect form before you stop and rest for maximum before the next set.”
In terms of his throwback thirst trap, his fans rushed to the comment section. One wrote: “You are living proof of that.”
Another said: “Old is gold champ .. god bless you always”.

I’m a bodybuilder in my 80s – I retired from sport aged 35 but came back when my wife got sick, now nothing will stop me
A MOTIVATED bodybuilder revealed what got him back into competing at an older age.
Toshisuke Kanazawa, 86, has been competing since he was 20 years old and called it quits by age 34 – but became re-inspired by his wife who was having health issues.

Kanazawa is good at what he does too; He recently competed in the Japan bodybuilding championship as the oldest person ever to do so and also beat his record for the same title from the year before.
He has been a Japan champion a total of 15 times during his overall career.
However, the bodybuilder restarted his career at age 50 to help encourage his wife’s health because she loved watching him compete and win, per My Modern Met.
Kanazawa explained that his bodybuilding is what would make her the happiest and would help with keeping her in a healthy state.
To prepare for the next chapter of bodybuilding, Kanazawa added that he had to resume training by spending three hours a day at the gym and got on a strict diet of rice, fermented soya beans, and miso soup with eggs.
The bodybuilder also has no plans to retire any time soon and hopes to continue with a successful career for at least another four years.
But he does want to stay healthy up until he is 100 years old.
“I hope I can reach the hearts of others when they see me take on a challenge even in old age,” Kanazawa said.
“I’m still not anywhere near the finish line. It’s important to keep setting goals and taking on challenges no matter how old you are.”
“I’d like to set myself as an example to other grandpas and grandmas in the world by living healthy until 100.”
Another bodybuilder who won a Mr. Olympia award in 2022 explained his story of how far he has come compared to when he used to feel uncomfortable taking his shirt off in public.
A female bodybuilder also described her story of how she earned the nickname “The Golden Panther.”
He said he hopes to live to be 100 to be an example for other elderly people[/caption]
I’m the world’s oldest female bodybuilder but I gave up on fitness when tragedy hit – here’s how I turned my life around
A BODYBUILDING grandma has told how she bravely turned her life around after the tragic death of her beloved sister.
Ernestine Shepherd – the world’s oldest female competitive bodybuilder – is in the best shape of her life at the ripe old age of 86.

Ernestine, 86, is the world’s oldest female competitive bodybuilder[/caption]
The grandma can easily outlift the majority of gymgoers after guzzling ten egg whites and a handful of walnuts each morning.
She credits the protein-rich concoction for fuelling her body to run 80 miles each week and getting up for her 4am workouts.
But the fitness fanatic, from Baltimore, only ventured into her health journey after hitting her 50s.
Ernestine was “prissy” when it came to exercise in her teen years and had never worked out a day in her life – until the age of 56.
She had been shopping for swimwear with her beloved sister Velvet, 57, when the pair vowed they would get into better shape.
The sisters, encouraged by the support of their local church, hit the gym and soon began to notice a huge difference in their physiques.
After getting into lifting weights, the sisters dreamed that one day they would make it into the Guinness Book of World Records.
But tragedy struck when Velvet suddenly passed away after suffering a brain aneurysm – sending Ernestine into a spiral of depression and anxiety.
“I went to pieces; I didn’t want to do anything… It was an awful way to live,” she said.
But after the gran’s pals rallied around her and her late sister came to her in a dream, she was inspired to restart her fitness journey and turn her life around.
Motivated by her love for Sylvester Stallone in the acclaimed Rocky films, Ernestine set out to achieve health and happiness.
Determined to bag a world record in honour of Velvet, she began sculpting her body into the perfect form for bodybuilding.
She got in touch with former Mr Universe, Yohnnie Shambourger, who offered his expertise to help her achieve world glory.
Ernestine switched up her diet and upped her weightlifting to create her enviably toned bod, before entering her first contest just seven months later, aged 71.
She won first place – seeing The Guinness Book of World Records contact her to crown her as the world’s oldest performing female bodybuilder in 2010.
The elderly marvel confessed she scattered some of her sister’s ashes while accepting the title on an Italian TV show.
“I’ll never forget standing on that stage as I collected my medal and certificate,” she gushed. “‘I’ve done what you wanted, Velvet’, I remember saying as tears filled my eyes.”
Ernestine’s triumph sparked a flood of interest in her lifestyle, seeing her earn a spot in Ripley’s Believe it or Not! book in 2011.
But she remained focused on her fitness, performing in several more bodybuilding competitions and completing nine marathons.
The 86-year-old claims chat show host Oprah Winfrey even Skyped her once to get workout tips.
Ernestine’s strength has continued to build, seeing her bench-press 115lb weights at the age of 86 to keep her muscles defined.
She now offers her knowledge to other seniors keen to get fit by running exercise classes as well as working as a personal trainer.
But she is still down with the kids and dons tight-fitting gym sets – and sometimes even heels – when burning some calories.
As well as being a role model for her husband, son and grandson, Ernestine has even “adopted” a group of youngsters at the gym who refer to her as “mum”.
Her incredible transformation even caught the eye of global superstar Beyonce – who gave her a cameo in her 2020 visual album Black is King.
Flexing her muscles and donning a bright orange t-shirt, the gran gave the music icon just as good as she got.
Ernestine gushed: “It was a wonderful, wonderful experience. Beyonce made me feel like a queen. I felt so honoured.
“I felt like I had the power to smile again. Beyonce has no idea what she’s done for me.”
