Liz Truss preparing to ditch scrapping 45p tax rate following crisis talks with Chancellor after brutal Tory backlash
LIZ Truss was last night preparing to ditch scrapping the 45p tax rate in a humiliating climb down.
After a day of brutal Tory backlash the PM summoned her Chancellor to crisis talks where they drew up plans to ditch the controversial tax cut for millionaires.
The surrender will be a body blow to the new government just hours after Truss defended the move on TV as the “right thing to do”.
It followed a day of bitter Tory acrimony at the opening of their party conference in Birmingham.
It roared into action yesterday with Tory big beasts trading extraordinary blows over last month’s tax-cutting mini-budget.
After days of market turmoil and MPs’ jitters the PM finally admitted she had blundered and should have “laid the ground better” for her tax plans — but said she “had to act”.

But risking a rift she said slashing them for the richest earners “was a decision that the Chancellor made”.
Former Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries said on Twitter: “One of Boris Johnson’s faults was that he could sometimes be too loyal and he got that. However, there is a balance and throwing your Chancellor under a bus on the first day of conference really isn’t it.”
Downing Street warned anyone voting against the plans will be kicked out of the party — as a major row erupted on the first day of the gathering in the home of TV gangster Tommy Shelby’s Peaky Blinders.
The Sun has learned No 10 will try to delay a vote on cutting the 45p rate of tax until next March in order to give the economy time to pick up before forcing the issue with MPs.
But despite spooking the Pound and sending the pensions industry into a tailspin, the PM reiterated her commitment to the £45billion tax-cutting spree.
She told the BBC: “I do want to say to people, I understand their worries about what has happened this week. And I do.

“I do stand by the package we announced and I stand by the fact that we announced it quickly because we had to act.
“But I do accept we should have laid the ground better. I do accept that. I have learned from that. And I will make sure that in future we do a better job of laying the ground.”
In a day of open civil war, the PM;
- ADMITTED she did not consult Cabinet Ministers before scrapping the 45p rate of tax;
- REFUSED to confirm that benefits would rise in line with inflation;
- HINTED swingeing spending cuts were on the way to reduce borrowing.
Appearing live on Sunday morning TV with the PM, Michael Gove launched an explosive attack saying Ms Truss had failed to make a case to abolish the 45p top rate levy during her winning leadership contest.
Mr Gove said the tax plan must be dropped, hinting he would vote against the plan.
He said she should only stick to halting the corporation tax rise and reversing the National Insurance rise.
Mr Gove said: “Now, personally I’m wary of the changes that she’s making in both those areas but she did win on that basis. But what was not discussed during the Conservative leadership election was the prospect of income tax cuts for the wealthiest.”
He added: “You need to make sure that the changes that we make are in tune with the values on which Boris won the 2019 election, which are looking after the most vulnerable in our society.”
Meanwhile, former Chancellor George Osborne revealed it was “touch and go whether the Chancellor can survive”.
Speaking to Channel 4’s The Andrew Neil Show, he said if Mr Kwarteng’s speech goes badly tomorrow “it’s curtains”.
He predicted that there will be a “humiliating defeat” in the House of Commons if the Government does not back down.

And former Chief Whip Julian Smith said: “The first job of an MP is to act in the interest of their constituents and in the national interest. We cannot clap for carers one month and cut tax for millionaires months later.”
But a source close to the Chancellor insisted: “While the Chancellor obviously makes all tax decisions, the Prime Minister and Kwasi are in lockstep on this.”
Meanwhile, Mr Kwarteng will attempt to calm the financial markets following a week of turmoil following his announcement.
His “growth plan” was heavily criticised by the IMF and the Bank of England had to intervene with a £65billion injection to prop up pension funds on the verge of collapse.
Mr Kwarteng will tell delegates: “I refuse to accept that it is somehow Britain’s destiny to fall into middle income status or that the tax burden reaching a 70-year high is somehow inevitable.
“It isn’t, and shouldn’t be. We needed a new approach, focused on raising economic growth.
“We must stay the course. I am confident our plan is the right one.”

The Chancellor will set out a “new economic deal” for the country to help manage debt with an “iron-clad commitment to fiscal discipline” as he strives for 2.5 per cent growth.
But Conservative Party chairman Jake Berry has warned the Tories face an uphill struggle to win the next election, saying “it’s time to deliver, deliver, deliver” on the promises made in the 2019 election.
Inside the human cost of Better.com’s brutal layoffs
Digital mortgage lender Better.com continues to lay off staff, and seemingly in as callous a way as possible. Indeed, whereas most companies try to avoid repeated layoffs, the outfit — which gained notoriety by laying off about 900 employees over Zoom on December 1, 2021 — has since been laying off smaller groups very systematically, […]

‘God of War: Ragnarok’ looks even bigger and more brutal than before
If you liked 2018’s God of War reboot, we have good news: The sequel looks like more of that, only bigger and crazier.
Sony unveiled a new trailer for God of War: Ragnarok during its State of Play stream on Tuesday. Series icon Kratos and his now-teen son Atreus are once again traveling through a particularly gory version of Norse mythology, featuring gross-looking valkyries and a couple of gigantic wolves. The last game was a graphical powerhouse on PS4, and Ragnarok certainly looks like it’ll continue that legacy as it moves onto PS5.
But don’t worry, PS4 owners: God of War: Ragnarok launches on both consoles on Nov. 9.

Mikey said an ‘ex boxer’ was hired to play ‘a heavy’[/caption]
The soap star, 35, has now revealed the actor playing the role is a former boxer and was “doing it for real” as they filmed the scene.
Speaking to The Daily Star, Mikey said: “Weirdly, one of the ‘heavies’, we call them – one of the baddie’s sidekicks in this storyline – was actually an ex-champion boxer.
“And let me tell you that when he strangles you he is not acting. He is doing that for real, and Millie [Gibson] will vouch for that as well. When you see us being strangled that is not acting.”
Kelly, played by Millie, will soon discover the truth surrounding her dad Rick’s death at the hands of her father figure.

She then hires a hitman to get revenge on Gary – but her plan backfires.
Along with Gary, the “heavy” also turns on her, leaving both of their lives hanging in the balance.
It was confirmed in June that Millie’s character Kelly would plot to bump Gary off after discovering the truth about Rick’s death.
And even then, the actress admitted it was unlikely that Kelly would carry out the murder.

Millie said: “I think she has those spiteful moments where we sort of see her old self but I don’t think she could be capable of that.”
Fans will wonder if the upcoming hitman scenes will pave the way for Millie’s exit from the soap.
It was confirmed in the summer that her character would be leaving Weatherfield following a three year stint and viewers fear she will be killed off.
Corrie boss Iain MacLeod has also confirmed she will have a “high stakes exit” — being seen as a hint that she dies.
Producer Mr MacLeod revealed in September: “We created this incredibly cinematic sequence for the setpiece of this week, which I’m incredibly excited about.

“The gist of the week is we all know, and it leaves me with a heavy heart to say it, but we all know Kelly’s leaving the show.
“So we thought, well, actually, the fact that Millie is going and that therefore Kelly is going, allows us to go really big and do something incredibly high stakes.”

The Rust September update adds a brutal new mode to the survival game
The big Rust September update is just around the corner, adding a brutal new mode to the survival game and streamlining some of the crafting interfaces. There’s also a few smaller changes on the way, such as alterations to how you access the clan menu and some model and texture improvements, including a more realistic-looking campfire and big flashing light switches, which is handy if you *checks notes* find yourself never being able to see light switches.

Minecraft Legends is full of character, oozes authenticity, looks brilliant… and is a bit like Brutal Legend
Credit where credit is due: Mojang has made some incredibly smart bets about ways to expand the Minecraft franchise. Back when Microsoft announced its purchase of the studio and its monolithic IP, I struggled to imagine exactly what could be done with Minecraft beyond the base game. Sure, that would continue to expand and grow – but did people really want to do anything else in that universe?
At the time, I reasoned that it didn’t matter if the universe could expand or not. Minecraft alone was big enough and important enough that it was worth every penny of the $2.5 billion Microsoft paid for it. But then, something magical happened: Mojang kept making smart partnerships that expanded the universe in brilliant and often unexpected ways.
Lego Minecraft went from a one-off set for nerds to a fully-fledged series of toys, beloved by children everywhere. Minecraft Story Mode released its first episode not long after the acquisition, and then 2019’s Minecraft Dungeons, which was a truly brilliant pairing of the established traditions of Minecraft with a kid-friendly Diablo clone. The Pokemon Go-like Minecraft Earth was a swing-and-a-miss – but that was an AR mobile game that launched right before a pandemic locked everybody indoors – so I’ll give them a pass.
