President Biden introduces new democratic candidates Guy Fieri, Azealia Banks, and more in ‘SNL’ cold open
In Saturday Night Live‘s most recent cold open, President Joe Biden (James Austin Johnson) gave voice to what’s on all our minds heading into this year’s midterm elections: “Big yikes.”
Biden laments the Democratic Party’s current lack of star power. In his words, Democrats have “too many Raphael Warnocks and not enough Herschel Walkers.” So how does Biden plan to turn things around for his party? By bringing in major star power, of course!
The rest of the cold open is a parade of cast impressions as Biden invites celebrities to discuss their platforms. Guy Fieri (Molly Kearney) promises a “full plate of paid family leave dripping in donkey sauce.” Tekashi 6ix9ine (Marcello Hernández) wants “no cap” on Social Security. Oh, and Marianne Williamson (Chloe Fineman) is somehow back, this time with a Tibetan singing bowl. To see the rest of Biden’s slate of Democratic hopefuls, which includes Stormy Daniels (Cecil Strong), Azealia Banks (Ego Nwodim), and Tracy Morgan (Kenan Thompson), check out the full sketch.
PBS NewsHour talks to surging Republican candidates in ‘SNL’ cold open
After a break last week, Saturday Night Live returned with a PBS NewsHour rendition for its cold open. Here, host Judy Woodruff (Heidi Gardner) interviews Republican candidates Herschel Walker (Kenan Thompson), Dr. Oz (Mikey Day), and Kari Lake (Cecily Strong) as their numbers continue to surge in the polls despite “none of you having any political experience.”
Each candidate got a chance to plead their case for their respective election races as Walker mostly rambled unintelligently, Dr. Oz hawked weight loss products, and Lake tried to downplay her support of 2020 election fraud claims despite it being the focal point of her campaign.
Even more impressive than anything in this sketch though is Cecily Strong’s Kari Lake impression, complete with smeared Vaseline all over the camera lens to make it super authentic.
