Intel needs 7,000 workers to build its $20 billion chip plant in Ohio
Intel is building what it claims is the “largest silicon manufacturing location on the planet” in Ohio, and it’s going to need 7,000 workers to construct it, according to a report from the Associated Press. However, a labor shortage affecting the construction industry could make it hard to recruit the workers it needs for the $20 billion job, and competition for workers could slow the pace of homebuilding in the area which is needed to support the growing workforce that Intel’s plant is supposed to attract.
Intel first announced the Ohio project in January of this year and is on track to begin construction in late 2022. Once finished, the 1,000-acre site will house two factories, or fabs, and employ at least 3,000 people. But it has…
Elon Musk is reportedly considering investment in Neuralink’s rival brain chip company
Neuralink, a company co-founded by Elon Musk, has been working on an implantable brain–machine interface since 2016. While it previously demonstrated its progress by showing a Macaque monkey controlling the cursor in a game of Pong, it has yet to start human trials. Now, according to Reuters, Musk has reached out to rival company Synchron in recent weeks to discuss a potential investment.
It’s unclear what kind of deal Musk has offered — whether it’s a collaboration or a financial investment —since none of the players responded or confirmed the report with the news organization. Reuters‘ sources also said that a deal isn’t certain and that Synchron has yet to decide whether to accept Musk’s offer. Apparently, the executive approached Synchron CEO after expressing his frustration to Neuralink staff over the company’s slow progress.
Neuralink announced way back in 2019 that it would seek approval for human trials in 2020. In January of this year, the company started looking for a clinical trial director who would oversee the testing of its medical device on human subjects. However, that has yet to happen, and the FDA has yet to reveal how far along Neuralink is in the process of securing its approval.
Meanwhile, Synchron announced in July that it had implanted its brain-computer interface into the motor cortex of a human patient in the US for the first time. Doctors in New York’s Mount Sinai West did so as part of the company’s COMMAND trial, which is aiming to examine the safety of Synchron’s implant in patients with severe paralysis. The company also completed a study in Australia, wherein four people were determined to still be safe even after a year with its implant.
Like Neuralink, Synchron is also hoping to provide people with limited mobility the ability to control devices like smartphones and computers with their minds. That will give them the independence to email, text and do various digital tasks. Earlier this year, Max Hodak, the Neuralink co-founder who left the company in 2021, revealed that he took on an advisory role with Synchron. He also financially invested in the company “given [his] excitement for what they’re doing.”
It’s worth noting, though, that Musk reportedly held discussions with other Neuralink rivals in the past. Reuters says he also approached brain-machine interface developer Paradromics in 2020, but those talks were ultimately abandoned.

What to Expect From Apple’s 10th-Generation Low-Cost iPad: Updated Chip, USB-C and Major Design Changes
This guide highlights everything that we know about the 10th-generation iPad.
Design Changes
Multiple rumors have indicated that the 10th-generation iPad is going to get some notable design changes. Without going into specifics, DigiTimes said that there are “major” design updates in the works, and leaked renders from MySmartPrice said to be of the next-generation iPad have given us some insight on what might be coming.
The upcoming tablet may feature a design that’s similar to the iPad mini with flat edges and rounded corners. There could be a power button at the top, but the bezels are not expected to be eliminated. The tablet is expected to measure in at 248.62mm (height) x 179.50mm (width) x 6.98mm (depth), which would make it wider and thinner than the current model. Rumors indicate the 10th-generation iPad will continue to feature a Touch ID Home button rather than Face ID.
A single-lens rear camera is expected, as is a front-facing camera, and Apple may include an LED flash. There is no word as of yet on whether the lens will be improved or if it will use the same 12-megapixel rear camera that’s in the existing model.
The 9th-generation iPad continues to feature a headphone jack, but it appears that Apple will remove the headphone jack from the 10th-generation model, bringing it in line with other iPads.
Display Size
According to respected display analyst Ross Young, the next-generation iPad is going to feature a larger 10.5-inch display, which would be an increase over the existing 10.2-inch display the ninth-generation iPad sports.
USB-C
Apple has been shifting the iPad line from Lightning to USB-C, and it’s the iPad’s turn for an update. The 10th-generation iPad is expected to feature a USB-C port for charging instead of a Lightning port, similar to the iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini.
Apple is planning to update its entire iPhone, iPad, and AirPod product lineup to USB-C starting next year in order to comply with new rules in Europe that require products to have a common charging port for device interoperability.
A14 Chip
The current iPad has an A13 Bionic chip, but Apple is rumored to be planning to upgrade the 10th-generation iPad to an A14 chip, which was first used in the iPhone 12 and the fourth-generation iPad Air. It will bring a moderate increase in performance and efficiency compared to the existing model.
5G?
Apple has added 5G connectivity across its iPhone product lineup and to iPads that include the current iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini models, so it stands to reason that the 10th-generation iPad could also get faster 5G connectivity.
Launch Date
The 10th-generation iPad is expected to launch later in the year, in either September or October. DigiTimes has suggested Apple is aiming for a September launch, but in years past, Apple has held a second Mac and iPad-centric event in October, leaving the September event for iPhones and Apple Watches. That said, the ninth-generation iPad did come out at Apple’s September 2021 event, so September 2022 is a strong possibility.
