Dark and Darker hit by “sophisticated” DDoS attack
Ironmace, the developer of dungeon-looting RPG game Dark and Darker, reports that it has suffered a “sophisticated” DDoS attack during the most recent round of online tests. The announcement comes as the game and its developer face a range of challenges, including a copyright infringement lawsuit from publishing company Nexon, claiming that Dark and Darker is made using assets and artwork created for one of Nexon’s own games.

DDoS Attacks Shifting To VPS Infrastructure For Increased Power
“The new generation of botnets uses a fraction of the amount of devices, but each device is substantially stronger,” explains Cloudflare in the report. “Cloud computing providers offer virtual private servers to allow start ups and businesses to create performant applications. The downside is that it also allows attackers to create high-performance botnets that can be as much as 5,000x stronger.” Cloudflare has been working with key cloud computing providers and partners to crack down on these emerging VPS-based threats and says it has succeeded in taking down substantial portions of these novel botnets.

Reflection DDoS attacks are on the rise again
A specific DDoS operation known as a “reflection attack” is again finding widespread use by cyber-criminals, abusing unprotected Microsoft servers to overload targeted websites with traffic. Black Lotus Labs notes the culprit is the Microsoft variant of the industry-standard Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) known as CLDAP.
Minecraft server targeted by a major DDoS attack
Cloudflare reported that a 2.5Tbps DDoS attack hit Minecraft server Wynncraft amid an increase in such attacks globally.
Blizzard and Overwatch 2 struck by third DDoS attack in a week
A DDoS attack on Blizzard caused issues for Overwatch 2 players earlier today, following on from similar attacks on the company during the free to play shooter’s launch last week. The latest attack came just after Overwatch 2 had finished a period of emergency maintenance. Although Blizzard have confirmed the DDoS attack has now ended, the recurring attacks aren’t exactly a good sign for a game already beset by technical issues.
Overwatch 2 is temporarily missing two heroes, and has been hit with more DDoS attacks
It’s safe to say that Overwatch 2 hasn’t had the smoothest launch since its release on October 4. On launch, servers were at full capacity while simultaneously being hit with DDoS attacks, meaning it was a long wait to get into a game you might be disconnected from.
Then, Blizzard removed its controversial SMS Protect system (for Overwatch 1 players) that was also locking out some players from jumping into all the action. There was a chat bug that saw players accidentally making purchases, and Bastion’s ultimate is completely broken.
Ultimately, Overwatch 2 is the latest in a long line of terrible game launches, beyond the initial grudges we had against the queues.
