American McGee is leaving game dev following rejection of Alice: Madness Returns sequel
Some bad news for Alice: Madness Returns fans, as creator American McGee has said that a proposal for a new game has been rejected.
In a new Patreon post from American McGee titled “End of the Adventure,” the creator of the cult classic series has shared the news that fans shouldn’t expect a new game, as EA has rejected any potential sequel. McGee set up the Patreon in order to help fund a design bible for Alice: Asylum, the hypothetical sequel, which he’s built up over the past few years. However, according to McGee’s post, EA has rejected funding a sequel.
“After several weeks of review, EA has come back with a response regarding funding and/or licensing for Alice: Asylum,” reads the post. “On the question of funding, they have ultimately decided to pass on the project based on an internal analysis of the IP, market conditions, and details of the production proposal. On the question of licensing, they replied that Alice is an important part of EA’s overall game catalogue, and selling or licensing it isn’t something they’re prepared to do right now.”
Long time Halo dev Joseph Staten is leaving Microsoft after nine years
Head of creative on Halo Infinite and cinematic director on the original three Halo games Joseph Staten is leaving Microsoft.
As reported by IGN, Staten is leaving Microsoft after nine years with the company, though the reasoning behind his departure hasn’t been confirmed as of yet. “We’re grateful for Joseph’s contributions to the Halo franchise and Xbox as a whole,” reads a statement from a Microsoft spokesperson. “We wish him all the best in his new adventure.” Staten has been a notable name behind the Halo series for years, working on the first three Halo titles (Combat Evolved, Halo 2, and Halo 3) as a cinematic director, and also served as a lead writer on Destiny while working at Bungie.
Staten commented on the report himself, writing, “Hey folks, I am indeed leaving Microsoft. I’ll have more info to share soon, but for now, I’d just like to thank all my Xbox colleagues for all their understanding and support as I embark on a new adventure.” Earlier this year, Staten left 343 Industries to return to Xbox Publishing, where he was prior to joining 343 Industries to lead development on Halo. This came shortly after Microsoft laid off around 10,000 employees, which did affect 343 Industries.
Payday 3 Dev Knows Pressure Is On To Deliver With Sequel
Just because the first two Payday games have been successful, that doesn’t mean Starbreeze is resting on its laurels with the upcoming Payday 3. Far from it, according to Starbreeze boss Tobias Sjogren. He told GI.biz that fans, and the industry at large, will expect Payday 3 to live up.
Sjogren said when he worked at DICE years ago, he remembers a meeting with EA about Battlefield 2. The developers at DICE felt confident given how much of a success Battlefield was, but a higher-up at EA reminded Sjogren and others that past success does not necessarily guarantee future success.
“‘You are never better than your next game,'” Sjogren recalls this person saying. “That’s something I’ve carried with me since because it is so true. In this industry, you can rely on your past to some degree, but it can never change what’s coming next. Everything you do next is important and that’s very much the case for Payday 3.”
Cyberpunk 2077 dev says cut content is cut “for a reason”
As with all games, Cyberpunk 2077 had content cut by CD Projekt Red. Whether it’s due to quality, production schedules, or an idea not meshing with the rest of a project, RPG games are no stranger to leaving things on the cutting room floor. So if you want to hear it from a Cyberpunk developer themself, and why this happens, we have a treat for you.

Want to see Street Fighter 6 at its best? Check out this dev gameplay
It’s nice to have flashy trailers that really show off an art style, or that really dig deep into an aesthetic. But to really understand a fighting game – I mean, really know how it’ll actually feel on the stick – you need to watch people that know what they’re doing have a fight.
Often, with fighting games, the really decent players won’t necessarily be the flashiest. If you watch a high-level Tekken game, for example, it’s a lot of footsie work and backdashing followed up by some impressively long (but not that over-the-top) combo work. The same goes for Street Fighter 6, it seems: the character trailers we’ve seen to date revel in big bombastic moves, flashy supers, and jaunty camera angles that show off new and returning cast members – but an actual fight between two devs? That’s the real deal.
In the video above, you’ll clock veteran Brit Cammy battling it out with French newcomer Manon. Cammy players will recognise some signature moves in the mix (Spiral Arrow, Cannon Spike, and Hooligan Combination), combined with some interesting new techniques realised via her Super Arts. Manon, very much into her dance and catwalking, forces Cammy to go along with her footwork (where we see Manège Doré, Renversé, and Pas de Deux in action), ending one combo in a great super that sees both do a routine before the Brit is unceremoniously tripped up, faceplanting the concrete.

RPS@PAX 2023: We chat with solo dev Billy Basso and publisher Bigmode about their upcoming moody metroidvania Animal Well
Out of all the game demos Liam and I have played at PAX East, we both agree that Animal Well is something special. It’s a 2D metriodvania where you play as a little blob trying to navigate a subtterranean labyrinth filled with creatures – some cute, some not so cute.
To find out more about this strange puzzle platformer’s beginnings and development, we spoke to solo develeoper Billy Basso and Bigmode’s Leah Gastrow which you can view in the two videos below.
