North East could be the next region to get a directly elected mayor in new plans
North East could get directly elected mayor in £1.4billion devolution deal
THE North East of England could become the latest region to have a directly elected mayor — as the Government announced a £1.4billion devolution deal.
Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove said the plan would bring fresh powers over skills, transport and housing across areas including Northumberland, Newcastle and Sunderland.
Mr Gove said: “I’m proud to have agreed a historic new devolution deal with the North East that gives local leaders more power, more money, and an even greater say on how their areas are run.
“Devolution is all about letting leaders who live and breathe the region decide what is in their best interests, for their people and for their businesses.
“A new mayor will ensure local priorities in the North East are at the heart of decision-making, while our billion-pound funding boost will provide the financial certainty needed to level up the area right now and for years to come.”
Elections for a mayor could take place in May 2024 following a consultation process.
The deal would deliver the cash over 30 years.
It comes on top of a promised £17.4million for new homes on brownfield land, and another £20million for regeneration projects.
The move was hailed as a “significant step” by local politicians.

Major cancer treatment shake-up as GPs to get extra powers to book cancer scans directly in bid to tackle disease early

NHS England CEO Amanda Pritchard encourages the idea of early testing to catch cancers[/caption]
It should slash delays for the 67,000 sufferers a year who have vague symptoms such as tiredness or tummy aches.
They account for one in five cancers detected but GPs will no longer need to send them to a hospital specialist before ordering tests.
NHS England CEO Amanda Pritchard will tell an NHS conference today: “By sending patients straight to testing, we can catch and treat more cancers at an earlier stage.”
Health bosses say the programme will also free up hundreds of thousands of hospital appointments.

Many non-urgent cases will be false alarms — but the NHS finds 67,000 out of 289,000 cancers this way each year.
Fast-tracking MRI, CT and ultrasound scans will cut waits times down to four weeks.
By 2028 the NHS wants to diagnose three quarters of cancers at stages one and two, before they have spread — clinics currently manage just over half.
Prof Martin Marshall from the Royal College of GPs, said: “It can be helpful for patients who might not meet the criteria for rapid referral and have vague symptoms that could be cancer.”
