Apple Looking to Make Its AR/VR Headsets More Immersive With Sharper Displays
According to the report, Apple is asking Samsung Display and LG Display to produce displays with 3500ppi (pixels-per-inch), an increase from the previous ask of 2800ppi, for the displays built into the headsets. Displays from LG Display and Samsung Display aren’t expected to be used in Apple’s first generation AR/VR product that’s rumored to be announced in January 2023, but will be used in future models already under development.
The displays that will be used in Apple’s headsets are rumored to be OLEDoS, a type of display technology that uses silicon instead of glass and is designed specifically for AR/VR products.
The report claims that the increase in display sharpness is part of Apple’s efforts to “increase the immersion consumers feel” when using its headsets. Apple’s first AR/VR headset, rumored to be called “Reality Pro,” is expected to be a high-end product that serves as an entry for Apple into the competitive AR/VR space with a price tag north of $2,000.

Germany Orders Shutdown of Digital Ad Displays To Save Gas
But as German outlet Invidis reports, the regulation was unhelpfully vague. For starters an updated ordinance [PDF] appears to have made the simple mistake of substituting 06:00 and 16:00 — meaning digital signage could only run from 4PM to 10PM. Invidis also pointed out that digital signage at bus stops and train stations can do double duty displaying ads and timetable information. Exceptions for such dual-purpose signs have been arranged. Those errors and ambiguities have reportedly left those who run digital signs unsure of what they needed to do and worried they might miss the deadline.
Further complicating matters is a requirement to turn off the screens altogether rather than leaving the displays blank. Digital signage is seldom switched off, and retail staff will have to learn how to do that. Many digital signs also include a computer — some are Android machines, others use compute sticks, the Intel NUC and even the Raspberry Pi. Admins will therefore need to cope with extra reboots. And then there’s the matter of content updates, which are often scheduled overnight. All of which adds up to a stressful moment for admins of digital signage, and not much time to get things right.

Duet Display’s second screen app is now available for Meta Portal devices
Meta is making its Portal smart displays more useful to remote workers. Starting today, you can use the Portal Go and second-generation Portal Plus as a second screen for your Mac or Windows PC. The new functionality comes courtesy of Duet Display, the app that inspired Apple’s Sidecar feature in macOS Catalina. Normally, you would need to either buy a copy of the software or subscribe to use Duet Display, but CEO Rahul Dewan told Engadget the company is making both wired and local wireless second display functionality free for Portal users.
One thing to note is you can’t use the app while video calling with the Portal Go or Portal Plus. Duet Display is available to download on Portal Plus in the US, Canada, UK, France, Spain, Italy, Australia and New Zealand, and Portal Go in the US, Canada, UK, France, Spain and Italy.
Meta is also releasing the Portal Companion app on macOS. The software allows you to share your screen while on call. You can also use the app to send links to the device and more easily access controls like the mute toggle. The Portal Companion app is available to download in the US and UK.
The arrival of Duet Display on Portal devices comes after Meta reportedly decided to reposition them as enterprise products. In June, The Information and Variety said the company would not announce any new consumer versions of the smart display line.
