There are more magnificent, messy murders to solve in the DLC for last year’s most devious detective game
Buying DLC for Game Pass and PS Plus titles can seem essential, but you’re left owning content you can’t use
Nothing in this world is permanent. Everything goes away, in the end. We’re all going to die. Even the universe itself, ultimately, is running on a clock. Heat death is coming for us all. But, more immediately, we have to contend with things we love dearly cycling in and out of our chosen subscription services. Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown leaves Netflix, Final Fantasy 13 leaves Game Pass, all the worthwhile PlayStation exclusives leave the it-was-never-permanent PS Plus Collection. Life goes on. We learn. We grow.
I am a massive Monster Hunter fan. Long-time readers of the site may know this by now; I can’t seem to shut the hell up about it. For my sins, I own the massive and very good expansion to Monster Hunter Rise, Sunbreak, no less than three times – on Switch, on PC, and now on Xbox. After the game was added to Xbox Game Pass at the start of the year, I thought I’d jump back in again… little did I know I’d get hooked (again) and go as far as owning the DLC for a third time. I have a problem, yes, but that’s not what this piece is about.
Owning the DLC but not the main game puts me in a weird space when it comes to being able to access content I own… given that I access the base game via Game Pass, but now I have a paid expansion on my account, that means that when Capcom inevitably rotates Rise out of the service, I will be left with £30+ of DLC that I cannot access. Unless I swing for the base game out of my own wallet. Which feels kinda counter-intuitive to what Game Pass is trying to achieve with its all-you-can-eat buffet promises.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns gets its final DLC next week, but the Nintendo Switch version has been cancelled
Frey is out to save Athia once more in this Forspoken DLC gameplay trailer
Square Enix and Luminous Productions have released a video showing off the first DLC for Forspoken, In Tanta We Trust.
Set to release on May 26, the DLC takes place 25 years before the events of Forspoken. In her search for a way to eradicate the Break from Athia, Frey finds herself following a mysterious voice that leads her to a place where she is transported to the Purge of the Rheddig.
Surrounded by chaos, destruction, injured, and draped in blood-soaked clothing, Frey finds the recently thriving Athia at war. Accompanied by Tanta Cinta, and a new set of magic, Frey must uncover the answers and save Athia once more – and attempt to save herself.
Spooky fishing sim Dredge lays out plans for a passive mode, paid DLC and more
The underwater scares of Dredge are about to run even deeper. Developer Black Salt Games have revealed a roadmap for their spooky fishing game, promising four new bits of content coming over the next year including a chiller passive mode, nice quality-of-life additions, and a larger paid DLC pack with a new non-eldritch horror threat.
Super Mega Baseball 4 Will Not Have Microtransactions But Some Paid DLC
Developer Metalhead Software has provided an update on Super Mega Baseball 4, confirming that the upcoming game won’t have microtransactions but will have DLC.
In a recent Reddit post, Metalhead discussed the game’s development progress, saying that the team has been “heads down building a bigger and better baseball experience in the next SMB,” and that a reveal of Super Mega Baseball 4 is planned for May 2. It added that it’s also been developing new game content and features that players have been requesting and that it’s wanted to pursue for years.
“Developing Super Mega Baseball as a part of EA Sports has been an amazing process where we’ve received more support and resourcing for our creative vision than we’ve ever had,” the post reads. “This game is every bit a Metalhead game as any of our first three releases; made by the same team (plus some new faces) and we think that’ll be obvious when you see it.”
Excellent detective game The Case Of The Golden Idol is getting three prequel DLC cases next week
The Case Of The Golden Idol was one of my favourite games of 2022, but one twist I didn’t see coming from the heir to Obra Dinn’s detective crown was more of it, or more of it so soon, for that matter. Happily, developers Color Gray Games have announced a new DLC pack is coming for The Golden Idol next week called The Spider Of Lanka. Set in 1741, a year before the first scenario of The Golden Idol proper, this trio of new cases looks set to shed extra light on the titular idol whose mysterious powers set the original game in motion. I’m afraid I can’t tell you much more than that, as most of the announcement details have been slapped with big black REDACTED marks. Have a watch of the reveal trailer below instead.
The final Cities Skylines DLC takes you on holiday before its sequel
The final Cities Skylines DLC Hotels and Retreats gets a release date on Steam and Epic. With the Cities Skylines 2 release date on the calendar for 2023, it’s time for one last outing in the original Paradox city-building game. Rather fittingly, then, it’s time to pack your bags and passport as this ultimate Cities Skylines expansion takes us all on a relaxing holiday break.
