Barbie makers team up with Brit model, 21, to unveil first doll with Down’s syndrome
MODEL Ellie Goldstein gets to grips with her history-making toy — the first Barbie with Down’s syndrome features.
Bosses at Mattel teamed up with the 21-year-old Brit to unveil it as part of Barbie’s inclusive Fashionistas line.
Ellie, 21, said: “I am so happy that there is a Barbie with Down’s syndrome.
“Seeing the doll, I felt so overwhelmed.
“It meant a lot to me and I’m so honoured and proud that Barbie chose me to show the doll to the world.
“Diversity is important to me.
“People need to see more people like me out there in the world.”
The doll is available to pre-order from toy firm Smyths.
It comes after the first Barbie dolls with prosthetic legs and hearing aids were launched last year.
The diversed dolls include a Ken doll with skin pigment condition vitiligo and a Barbie in a wheelchair.
Other new Kens are shorter and less muscular.
The hearing aidswere designed in collaboration with audiologist Dr Jen Richardson.

Halle Bailey reveals new ‘The Little Mermaid’ doll made in her likeness
Actor and singer Halle Bailey shared an emotional reveal on Monday of a new doll made in her image, as the first Black actor to portray Ariel in the forthcoming live-action Disney remake of The Little Mermaid.
“I am literally choking up because this means so much to me,” Bailey said in a video shared on her Twitter and Instagram accounts for her more than 5 million followers. “And to have one that looks like me, that’s my favorite Disney character, is very surreal.”
Holding back understandable happy tears, Bailey emotionally pointed out the doll’s lookalike features, including a facial mole matching her own. Fans took to the comments to share congratulations and to join in on her enthusiasm, including Bailey’s sister and fellow musician, Chloe Bailey, who commented, “IM BUYING 100 OF THEM!!!”
The live-action remake of the 1989 animated classic is set to hit theaters on May 26. It will premiere in the wake of online criticism of the titular character being portrayed by a Black actor, despite the industry-wide call for greater representation on screen. Bailey’s previously opened up about feeling overwhelming pressure to do the character justice — for both her younger self and other fans — amid a growing online conversation that’s been impatiently awaiting the film drop since her casting was announced in 2019.
While the new adaptation has stirred multiple conversations criticizing the Disney production, including artistic choices made by directors and animators, The Little Mermaid release has seen an equally sizeable outpouring of support — especially from those excited to see themselves in the role of an iconic Disney princess.
The new Mattel doll will be available on shelves this spring.

SNL’s M3GAN Sequel Aims the Killer Doll Directly at the Gays
The success of Universal and Blumhouse’s M3GAN during the month can be attributed to a few factors, but it definitely resonated with queer audiences. Maybe it was because of her hair, the way she always looks like she’s throwing shade, or maybe just that she’s doing murders: call it what you want, she found that niche.
