California court upholds Prop 22 in win for Uber, Lyft, DoorDash
A California appeals court on Monday reversed a lower-court ruling that found Proposition 22, the ballot measure passed in November 2020 that classified Uber and Lyft drivers as independent contractors rather than employees, to be illegal. The decision by three appeals court judges, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, is a win for app-based […]

Now DoorDash will deliver Starbucks across the US, too
DoorDash will soon start delivering Starbucks food and drinks in all 50 US states, the company announced in a blog post. The service will initially roll out to Northern California, Texas, Georgia, and Florida before expanding into the rest of the US in March.
Through the partnership, users can place orders with the DoorDash app instead of the Starbucks app. Starbucks says it’ll make about 95 percent of “its core menu” available through the service and will let customers customize their orders as if they were using Starbucks’ own app.
While DoorDash first started delivering Starbucks products last year, the program was only limited to select cities, including Atlanta, Houston, Sacramento, Seattle, Portland, and New York City.

Starbucks will offer nationwide DoorDash delivery by March
DoorDash and Starbucks plan to expand their delivery partnership to all 50 US states by March this year, the companies announced Tuesday. Following a pilot that began last year in Atlanta, Houston and Sacramento (and later expanded to Seattle, Portland and New York City), people in North California, Texas, Georgia and Florida can now turn to DoorDash when they want a Starbucks coffee delivered to them.
According to Starbucks, it will offer 95 percent of the items found on in-store menus through DoorDash. You can also customize your order just like when you order in person. The app allows you to specify whether you want syrup in your drink, your milk preference and your choice of expresso roast. DoorDash also promises prompt delivery of coffee orders but stops short of a specific guarantee. DashPass customers won’t need to pay additional delivery fees to get their pumpkin spice latte orders to their door. For everyone else, DoorDash’s standard delivery and service fees apply.
Uber Eats has offered nationwide delivery of Starbucks orders since 2019, making the timing of the DoorDash expansion somewhat puzzling. By all accounts, the era of massive growth delivery firms saw during the first two years of the pandemic has come to an end. Between the easing of lockdown restrictions in many jurisdictions and cost of living increases, fewer people are using delivery apps.

DoorDash is piloting drone deliveries with Wing in Australia
Alphabet’s Wing division has teamed up with DoorDash to deliver some convenience and grocery items — such as pantry staples, snacks and household essentials — by drone. Customers can place an order through the “DoorDash Air” section of the DoorDash app and receive their items in as little as 15 minutes.
When they check out, users will need to select a delivery spot for the drone to drop off their package. The DoorDash app will ask them to confirm that the drop zone is clear before the user completes the order.
The pilot is live in Logan, Australia, where Wing has been testing its services for a few years. DoorDash drone deliveries are only available to a small number of households for now, but availability will be expanded in the coming months. The drones can carry a payload of just over a kilogram, DoorDash said.
This is a big step for Wing, as it marks the first time that the company’s services have been accessible through a third-party app. DoorDash employed Wing’s new API to make the integration work. Until now, the Wing Delivery App has been the main way for customers to order and receive items via the company’s drones.
Wing says it has been working on a way to offer third-party app integration for some time. “We see this new functionality as a logical step on this journey to make drone delivery a plug-and-play option for more businesses and consumers — no matter what app they use,” Wing wrote in a blog post.
Wing has been expanding its footprint in recent months. The company announced last month that its drone delivery service was coming to Ireland imminently. It’s also operating in Christiansburg, Virginia and Helsinki, Finland.
