Thousands of violent sex attacks committed in NHS hospitals — with dozens happening every week, report reveals
THOUSANDS of violent sex attacks have been committed in NHS hospitals – with dozens of offences happening every week, a new report reveals today.
More than 6,500 rapes and sexual assaults, including against children under 13, were reported in hospitals across England and Wales in the last four years.

At least 2,088 rapes and 4,451 sexual assaults in hospitals were reported to police between January 2019 and October 2022.
One in seven of the offences occurred on supposedly secure hospital wards.
And figures uncovered by the Women’s Rights Network reveal just 265 people – fewer than five per cent of alleged perpetrators – were charged for their offences.
It means dozens of brutal attacks take place in hospitals every week, with WRN founder Heather Binning claiming the statistics were “just the tip of the iceberg”.
She said: “Hospitals are places where everyone – patients, staff and visitors – should feel completely safe.
“But rapes and violent assaults are taking place every week in hospitals. To add to the horror, those men committing the crimes are getting away with it.”
Ms Binning likened the revelations to paedophile Jimmy Saville’s widespread abuse of patients at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, calling the stats “absoloutely terrifying”.
She added: “A charge rate of 4.1 per cent is appalling – the hospitals and police are failing women and children yet again.
“No one should have the added worry that they or a loved-one is at risk of being raped or sexually assaulted when they are in hospital.”
The stats – released under a Freedom of Information request – revealed at least 10 rapes were committed against underage girls at hospitals across Cambridgeshire, Lancashire and the West Midlands.
The WRN say the true figure is likely to be higher, as only 35 of the UK’s 43 police forces provided data to the charity’s investigation.

Apple Watches and iPhones are Placing Dozens of False Distress Calls About Skiers
“Do you have an emergency?” [911 emergency dispatcher] Betts asked. No, the man said, he was skiing — safely, happily, unharmed. Slightly annoyed, he added, “For the last three days, my watch has been dialing 911.”
Winter has brought a decent amount of snowfall to [Colorado]’s ski resorts, and with it an avalanche of false emergency calls. Virtually all of them have been placed by Apple Watches or iPhone 14s under the mistaken impression that their owners have been debilitated in collisions. As of September, these devices have come equipped with technology meant to detect car crashes and alert 911 dispatchers. It is a more sensitive upgrade to software on Apple devices, now several years old, that can detect when a user falls and then dial for help. But the latest innovation appears to send the device into overdrive: It keeps mistaking skiers, and some other fitness enthusiasts, for car-wreck victims.
Lately, emergency call centers in some ski regions have been inundated with inadvertent, automated calls, dozens or more a week. Phone operators often must put other calls, including real emergencies, on hold to clarify whether the latest siren has been prompted by a human at risk or an overzealous device. “My whole day is managing crash notifications,” said Trina Dummer, interim director of Summit County’s emergency services, which received 185 such calls in the week from Jan. 13 to Jan. 22. (In winters past, the typical call volume on a busy day was roughly half that.) Ms. Dummer said that the onslaught was threatening to desensitize dispatchers and divert limited resources from true emergencies.
“Apple needs to put in their own call center if this is a feature they want,” she said.
Apple acknowledged this was occuring in “some specific scenarios,” the Times reports — but a spokesperson also “noted that when a crash is detected, the watch buzzes and sends a loud warning alerting the user that a call is being placed to 911, and it provides 10 seconds in which to cancel the call.”
But the Times points out that “skiers, in helmets and layers of clothing, often do not to detect the warning, so they may not cancel the call or respond to the 911 dispatcher.”

Fuming passengers complained on social media with many stuck on the plane for hours after it landed.
One Twitter user wrote: “Flights cancelled. Where are the shuttle buses? No information, no buses, no staff, long queue standing in freezing cold for well over an hour.”
Another tweeted: “We’ve parked but there’s no shuttle bus available to take passengers from the plane to the terminal…an hour late, now.”
A third said: “Landed over an hour ago at T5 and still haven’t got off the plane.”
The cancellations come after temperatures dropped as low as -8C, resulting in dangerous fog across the runways.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, explaining why it affects airlines.
The website states: “Fog, snow, ice and crosswinds mean that air traffic controllers have to increase the gap between planes that are landing, reducing the number of aircraft that an airport can manage.
“The same weather can make it slower and more difficult for the planes to taxi between runway and terminal building.”
It comes after around 70 BA flights were cancelled yesterday due to the weather as well.
A British Airways spokesperson said: “Like other airlines, our schedule has been affected by the continued freezing fog weather conditions experienced across London.
“We’ve apologised to customers whose flights have been affected and are doing everything we can to get them on their way as quickly as possible.
A Heathrow spokesperson also said: “Poor visibility is forecast this morning at the airport and across the South East.
“While there may be minor changes to today’s schedule as a result of the weather, we want to reassure passengers that our colleagues are working in close collaboration with our airline and air traffic control partners to get them safely away on their journeys as quickly as possible.”
