The remake of Like A Dragon: Ishin is here, finally releasing worldwide today. This international release will be a first for the game, too, which had only ever been released in Japan before.
On top of that, Like A Dragon: Ishin is introducing new gimmicks and mechanics to the game to keep gameplay fast, smooth, and intuitive. More specifically, these new addtions are being made to ensure that combat feels as good as can be. One of the most intriguing additions to the game is that of Trooper Cards, which are cards with special attacks, abilities, and debuffs that can make or break a fight.
One of Like A Dragon: Ishin’s many Trooper Cards is going to feature avid gamer and horror legend, Rahul Kohli, who rose to fame on iZombie between 2015 and 2019. We were able to have a brief chat with Rahul, who you may recognise as Owen from The Haunting of Bly Manor, Sheriff Hassan from Midnight Mass, or maybe he’s already appeared on one of your favourite gaming-centric podcasts. Not ours, though. Yet.
All hail Garlic Jr., the only Dragon Ball villain who actually won (kinda)

Like a Dragon: Ishin review – An exceptional RPG that fulfils the Samurai fantasy

I spend one Ryo for access to the Gion brothel and take on Rock Paper Scissors on the hardest difficulty. It’s a tough fight but I clutch out a win against a now borderline-naked prostitute, and leave her confused as I walk out the door and back to the street. 30 seconds later, I’m unloading three bullets into the chest of a street thug, only for his friend to join my local police force. Like a Dragon: Ishin is exceptionally entertaining.
That might not be a shock to fans of the Yakuza series, a long-running powerhouse that has thrown players into Kamurocho with numerous games as generous with balls-to-the-wall action as it is with genuinely engaging narratives and a healthy dollop of wackiness. I was glad to discover after over 80 hours of in-game fighting, fetching, and fishing that this 19th Century historical rollercoaster lacks none of the bite of its modern brothers.
Let’s break it down for those of you who aren’t familiar with the Like a Dragon franchise. It’s a third-person action game, with a heavy focus on deep character-driven stories with often political twists and turns threaded throughout. This puts the series in a somewhat unique position among its peers: one second you’re pulling off explosively violent finishing moves, the next you’re learning about the importance of an empty lot. Like a Dragon: Ishin takes that tried and true structure and places it in an altogether different setting: 19th century Kyo.
Like A Dragon Ishin review: a step backwards in the best way

I am legendary ronin Sakomoto Ryoma. I shout “yosh!” as I harvest six (6) gleaming radishes from my allotment. I shoot a bandit in the head with a revolver. I send my adoptive daughter to trade some homemade pickles. I partake in a brooding chat, then stamp on a dude’s head. I help a recluse regain his confidence. I have totally forgotten what I was meant to be doing.
Like A Dragon: Ishin feels like a step backward, but in a brilliant way. Kiryu and co. may have moved onto a turn-based future, yet Sakomoto Ryoma and his pals have turned back the clock to an Edo period of brawlin’ and chicken betting that’s most reminiscent of Yakuza 0, only it’s not the roaring 80s but the bloody 1800s. There’s nothing here that will convert those who aren’t keen on the series, but if you’re an ardent fan or a newcomer eager to experience its wild swings between serious and silly, Ishin is an excellent place to start.
