TikTok’s sketchy user ‘clusters’ reportedly drew internal complaints
It’s already known just how extensive TikTok is about collecting user data. From names, users’ approximate locations, and IP addresses, to even keystrokes, it’s pretty intense. This meticulous level of data collection is an advertisers’ wet dream, but it’s the method by which TikTok catalogs that data that reportedly gave rise to recent internal concerns.
As The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, former TikTok employees have claimed that the app has been tracking the videos that users watch under topics, including “LGBT,” and in essence compiling lists of users who watch such content, which could at one point be viewed by some employees through a dashboard.
The WSJ described the groupings as “clusters,” which function like the notorious “taste clusters” at Netflix that have been extensively mocked and parodied. They had names such as “mainstream female,” “alt female,” “southeastern black male,” and “coastal, white-collar male,” according to the Journal‘s report. TikTok does not ask for users’ sexual orientation, but based on the content users watch, it appears the algorithm was, at the very least, assuming that users were members of the LGBTQ community and categorizing them accordingly, all in the name of getting people to use the app more.
In one telling example, the WSJ notes that the “alt-female” cluster branches out into content related to “tattoos, some lesbian content, and ‘Portland.'”
As noted in the report, it is not uncommon for many social media and ad-tech companies to infer traits about their users based on online behavior. They use it to select which content or ads to serve to users. However, with TikTok’s “clusters” system, liking LGBT content didn’t just mean you were shown more queer-friendly content, but it seems the app as a whole essentially labeled users as members of the community.
This sketchy way of cataloging user data lead to internal worries, according to the WSJ, as some TikTok employees could view the unique identification numbers of users and the list of users who were watching videos in each cluster. This raised fears among the workers that the data could be shared with outside parties or used to blackmail LGBT users, the WSJ reported. Especially since Tiktok has admitted in the past to spying on reporters.
A spokeswoman for TikTok told the WSJ that the app doesn’t identify sensitive information based on what users watch and that users’ interests do not necessarily represent their identity. TikTok also confirmed that the dashboard used to access data on watchers of gay content was deleted nearly a year ago.
TikTok still collects this data but has simply replaced the cluster names with numbers and restricted access to a smaller number of employees within the company’s new U.S. unit.
It’ll be interesting to see how this new development plays out as the US continues to push to ban TikTok in the country. However, given the US government’s own capabilities of spying on its own citizens and its, at best, “tolerance” of the LGBTQ community right now, this might not mean much to the relevant policymakers in DC.

Emotional moment WWE cameras didn’t show after Intercontinental title megamatch amid Drew McIntyre’s uncertain future
WWE superstars Sheamus and British hero Drew McIntyre broke character at WrestleMania 36.
McIntyre and the Irish legend challenged Intercontinental Champion Gunther at the SoFi Stadium in Hollywood.
The three heavyweights put together one of the greatest WrestleMania fights of all time that may have stolen the show.
Gunther picked up the win after Powerbombing Sheamus on McIntyre before repeating the same move on the Scotsman for the victory.
As the Austrian walked to the back with his belt to celebrate, the cameras went off in California.
Sheamus and McIntyre then broke character by hugging each other in the middle of the ring.
The two heavyweights also received a loud ovation from the crowd after an incredible display.
The former world champions entered the match as rivals and hinted that their friendship was on the brink of falling apart over the Intercontinental Championship.
That took place amid intense rumours suggesting McIntyre is on his way out of WWE.
The two-time world champion’s contract is in its final year and there are “no signs” of an extension after WrestleMania.

There has reportedly been no progress towards a new deal between the wrestling giants and the 37-year-old.
The exact reason why negotiations have hit a snag between the two parties is currently unknown.
That means this could have been the first ever British WWE Champion’s last ever WrestleMania.

Ryan Reynolds, Drew Barrymore, and other celebs respond to their ‘Ted Lasso’ shout-outs
Awards are cool, sure. But have you ever received a shout-out in an episode of Ted Lasso?
If you think football is life, frequently crave biscuits, try to be a goldfish when times get tough, and believe in “Believe,” you’ll likely agree that being referenced in the wholesome sports comedy is one of the highest honors a person can receive.
Like Season 1 of Ted Lasso, Season 2, which started streaming on Apple TV+ July 23, is packed with witty jokes and pop culture references galore. Ted and his Richmond crew love to name drop celebrities, bands, authors, and other noteworthy figures. And because the show is so good, sometimes those celebrities just can’t help but gush over their shout-outs.
Here are a few familiar faces who’ve already responded to their mentions in Ted Lasso Season 2.
1. Lin-Manuel Miranda
This exchange between Coach Lasso and Coach Beard was stunning. But isn’t it even better knowing that at the end of the day even Miranda — an actor, singer, songwriter, rapper, producer, playwright, and so on — knows that football is life? You love to see it.
2. Reba McEntire
Thanks to Ted, Roy Kent used the alias “Reba McEntire” to pick up his Richmond tickets. Reba (aka Red Lasso) shared on Twitter that she couldn’t believe her ears when she heard her name in Season 2, Episode 5, and since then, Ted assured her that if she ever wants to attend a game she can pick her tickets up under the name “Roy Kent.” Adorable.
3. Pearl Jam
Not even the great Pearl Jam could resist getting into the Ted Lasso spirit. You have to admit: That’s inspiring.
4. Drew Barrymore
What’s better than watching Ted Lasso’s speech about believing in rom-communism? Watching rom-com icon Drew Barrymore watch Ted’s rom-communism speech and scream over her shout-out, of course.
5. Diane Sawyer
Seeing legendary broadcast news journalist Diane Sawyer tweet for the first time in over a year to shoot her shot with Ted Lasso? We ship.
6. Brené Brown
Brené Brown, like any true Ted Lasso fan would be, was perfectly cool and chill when she learned about her Season 2 shout-out. No big deal. Nothing to see here, right Coach Beard?
7. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney
And of course, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney went to great lengths to respond to their Ted Lasso joke. To recap: Higgins told Rebecca he’d just received a call from AFC Wrexham’s new owners, “showbix magnates,” Reynolds and McElhenney.
“I can’t tell if them buying the club is a joke or not,” Higgins concluded.
For context, the actors and friends co-own the Welsh football club under the company “RR McReynolds,” and per a very official looking letter, they requested that Ted Lasso cease and desist from casting doubt on their ownership. In said letter they also referenced another popular Apple TV+ comedy (Mythic Quest, in which McElhenney stars) and threatened to take legal action if they didn’t receive two large boxes of Ted’s biscuits in a timely manner.
As you would imagine, Ted delivered.
8. Rick Astley
In Episode 10 of the show’s second season, “No Weddings and a Funeral,” Rick Astley’s popular ’80s hit, “Never Gonna Give You Up,” took the spotlight on several occasions. After the episode aired, Astley himself took a break from Rickrolling the people to earnestly share his love of Ted Lasso on Twitter. We don’t want to spoil anything, so just watch.
Hannah Waddingham even slid into Astley’s DMs afterwards. We assume neither of them are ever going to give this up.
Fans are introduced to a new batch of sharp jokes and pop culture references with each new episode of Ted Lasso. Some are glaringly obvious, while others are extremely subtle. But the special few that reach the eyes of the sources who inspired them are perhaps some of the greatest.
We’ll be sure to update the list with any future celebrity responses.
The first 10 episodes of Ted Lasso Season 2 are now streaming on Apple TV+, with new episodes every Friday.
UPDATE: Sept. 27, 2021, 2:11 p.m. EDT This article was updated to include Rick Astley’s response to his song, “Never Gonna Give You Up,” playing on Ted Lasso.
