In his latest YouTube video, Sam Kohl assessed the Apple Watch Ultra’s durability by subjecting the watch to some major abuse, as part of an unscientific but entertaining test. Kohl dragged the Apple Watch through some rocks on the ground, smashed it against hard objects like a concrete wall and metal pole over 50 times, and more. In the end, the titanium case was quite scuffed, but the sapphire crystal cover was still in tact.
Durability tests on YouTube are often quite silly, but it is still impressive that the Apple Watch Ultra held up to this much intentional mishandling.
Apple Watch Ultra launched last Friday. In addition to having a rugged design, the high-end watch features improved water resistance up to a depth of 100 meters, a customizable bright orange “Action” button, up to 60 hours of battery life with an upcoming low power setting, a Night mode, an 86-decibel siren for emergencies, and more.
If these durability tests are your sort of thing, the Apple Watch Ultra was smashed with a sledgehammer in another recent video.

TechRax, a channel popular for testing the durability of products, first tested the Apple Watch Ultra by dropping it from around four feet high. The Apple Watch Ultra was left mostly unscuffed, aside from some minor dents along the titanium casing. Next, the Apple Watch Ultra was mixed around in a jar of nails and was once again left with no visible marks.
TechRax also tested the durability of the Apple Watch Ultra’s sapphire crystal display cover by repeatedly hitting it with a hammer. In the test, the watch withstood repeated hits with the hammer until it finally cracked, and only after the table took some damage first.
While the Apple Watch Ultra’s display did not initially take damage, the watch did fail to turn on after repeated hits. The failure to power on could indicate that while the sapphire may not have broken at first, some internal components may have suffered damage. Of course, the test is unrealistic in portraying a typical use case of the Apple Watch Ultra, but it may provide some customers reassurance about the strength of the sapphire crystal display cover.
Apple claims the Apple Watch Ultra is its most rugged, durable, and extreme Apple Watch yet, appearing to be aimed to compete directly with Garmin. In response to the Apple Watch Ultra, Garmin said it measures battery life in “months” and not “hours.” The Apple Watch Ultra is priced at $799 and began arriving to customers on Friday.

YouTuber JerryRigEverything does an annual scratch test on new iPhones using the Mohs mineral hardness scale, and with the iPhone 14, the results were as expected. Apple is still using the same Ceramic Shield used in the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, and faint scratches were observed at a level 6 hardness.
Much more noticeable scratches appeared with the level 7 tool, which is the exact same result that was observed with the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 12 before that, so there are no quiet improvements to the display durability this year.
The aluminum frame scratched easily, which is no surprise, and the sapphire crystal camera lens scratched at a level 6, which is notable because sapphire typically ranks at level 9 on the Mohs hardness scale.
Other YouTubers subjected the iPhone 14 devices to hammers, knives, screws, and other tools to attempt to demonstrate durability, but it’s difficult to glean useful information from tests like these. It can be impressive how much damage the iPhone 14 models can endure before a scratch shows up, but real world conditions vary and the wrong angle or the wrong edge on a tool can cause a scratch in one situation where it might not in another.
Apple did not make notable durability specific claims about the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models, with the new iPhones using the same glass components as the prior-generation iPhone 13 models.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is the latest in the line of Samsung’s foldables to endure JerryRigEverything’s torture test that subjects devices to razor blades, lighters, and handfuls of dirt. Like the Fold 3 and Fold 2 before it, the Fold 4 managed to survive the test, albeit with quite a few scratches and some burnt-up pixels.
But the real question is whether the Fold 4 can pass the test of time. Samsung has taken significant steps toward improving the durability of its lines of foldables, making them water resistant, as well as adding stronger screens with a more rigid aluminum frame. And while the company has released videos — both this year and the last — designed to inspire confidence about the durability of its devices, they still don’t…
