FIFA 23 and other EA titles will come with controversial “kernel-mode” anti-cheat software
The latest game publisher to add kernel-level cheat protections is EA. The new EA Anti-Cheat (EAAC) debuts in the upcoming FIFA 23 for PC later this month. Senior Director of Game Security & Anti-Cheat Elise Murphy explained that it would eventually roll out to all of EA’s multiplayer competitive titles.
EA announces kernel-level anti-cheat system for PC games
Electronics Arts (EA) is launching a new kernel-level anti-cheat system for its PC games. The EA AntiCheat (EAAC) will debut first in FIFA 23 later this fall and is a custom anti-cheat system developed in-house by EA developers. It’s designed to protect EA games from tampering and cheaters, and EA says it won’t add anti-cheat to every game and treat its implementation on a case-by-case basis.
“PC cheat developers have increasingly moved into the kernel, so we need to have kernel-mode protections to ensure fair play and tackle PC cheat developers on an even playing field,” explains Elise Murphy, senior director of game security and anti-cheat at EA. “As tech-inclined video gamers ourselves, it is important to us to make sure that any…
EA will debut new anti-cheat tech with ‘FIFA 23’ on PC
Electronic Arts is determined to keep cheaters at bay. The company has developed a kernel-level anti-cheat system for PC that it will deploy alongside FIFA 23 when the game arrives on September 30th. According to the publisher, the move was necessary to “ensure fair play” by taking on PC cheat developers who are increasingly building kernel-level exploits that OS-level anti-cheat tools are unable to detect.
In a blog post, EA’s senior director of game security and anti-cheat Elise Murphy wrote that the company created EA AntiCheat (EAAC) because “third-party anti-cheat solutions are often opaque to our teams, and prevent us from implementing additional privacy controls or customizations that provide greater accuracy and granularity for EA-specific game modes.” It should also be able to address security issues head on.
EAAC won’t be used in all EA games, though the publisher says it’s necessary for competitive titles with an online focus, such as FIFA 23. This year’s edition includes cross-play support and, in theory, EAAC should prevent console players from having to deal with PC cheaters. The company may take different anti-cheat approaches in games without leaderboards or a competitive system. As such, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see EA add EAAC to the likes of Apex Legends, but it seems unlikely to be patched in to the 2021 Game of the Year (don’t take my word for it) It Takes Two.
The tool will only be active when a game with EAAC is running on your PC. It will be uninstalled when you remove all EA games that require it (you can uninstall EAAC manually, but the likes of FIFA 23 won’t be playable). Murphy wrote that “EAAC will have negligible impact on your gameplay,” so it shouldn’t diminish performance.
As far as system privacy and security goes, Murphy says that EAAC will only examine the files it needs to for anti-cheat reasons. EAAC will hash the information that it does collect and jettison the original data. The tool won’t collect data from your browsing history, apps that don’t interact with EA games or anything else that’s irrelevant to its purposes, according to the blog post.
EA isn’t the first publisher to adopt a kernel-level anti-cheat approach. Riot and Activision use similar tools in Valorant, Call of Duty: Vanguard and Call of Duty: Warzone.
EA and the developer of Dynasty Warriors team up to take on Monster Hunter
‘The next great hunting game’ is a partnership between EA Originals and Koei Tecmo
EA is working with a surprising dev partner on an upcoming AAA EA Originals game
The next major release from EA Originals, the EA label typically responsible for smaller projects from indie teams, is one you may not have seen coming if you don’t tend to keep up with industry rumours.
EA is partnering with Omega Force, the Koei Tecmo studio responsible for the Warriors series – Samurai Warriors, Dynasty Warriors and others. The developer is working on a new AAA IP that’s set in a fantasy version of feudal Japan.
EA called the project, “the next great hunting game,” suggesting it’s a Monster Hunter-style action RPG, though the publisher didn’t reveal any details. The good news is that more information will be shared later this month, potentially at TGS, given the studios and publishers involved.
The next EA Original is a fantasy hunting game set in feudal Japan from Koei Tecmo
The next EA Original has been announced, and it’s coming from Koei Tecmo and Omega Force, developers of the Dynasty Warriors series. Set in Japan during its feudal period but with a fantasy twist, EA and Koei Tecmo describe the as-yet-untitled project as “the next great hunting game”. Dispel those mental images of theHunter: Call Of The Wild and Big Buck Hunter though, because it sounds like this is more in the vein of hack-and-slash monster hunting shenanigans.
EA Is Making A New AAA Hunting Game With Dynasty Warriors Publisher Koei Tecmo
A new game under the EA Originals label has just been announced, which will be developed in partnership with the team behind Dynasty Warriors–publisher Koei Tecmo and studio Omega Force. The as-yet untitled project is a AAA hunting game that will be set in a fantasy version of feudal Japan.
The upcoming game, which will introduce an original IP, seems set to try and compete with Capcom’s Monster Hunter series, with its focus on hunting action and fantasy feudal Japanese setting. In a press release, Koei Tecmo said it would be a “new type of hunting game,” with “unexpected and innovative mechanics.” More details on the new title will be revealed later this month.
Studio Omega Force is most well-known for its Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors games, as well as other titles in the musou genre such as Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors. The studio has also branched into more hunting-style games, notably including two Attack on Titan games that tasked players with taking down the titular giant humanoid titans.
