Path of Exile update 3.20 adds roguelike dungeon The Forbidden Sanctum
Path of Exile update 3.20 has been revealed by Grinding Gear Games, and it centres around a new roguelike dungeon coming to the RPG game called The Forbidden Sanctum. In addition, the update is reworking several big systems including the Atlas Tree and Eldritch altars, as well as providing some big buffs to underused unique weapons. It will also see the introduction of new Path of Exile monster mods to replace the controversial Archnemesis system, and the full rollout for a Ruthless mode aimed at hardcore Diablo 2 veterans.

Path Of Exile 2 is coming in 2023, and we’ll find out more at Exilecon in July
The long-awaited Path Of Exile 2 will be fully unveiled next year, first at Exilecon 2023 before heading to Gamescom in August for European players to check out in the flesh, devs Grinding Gear Games have confirmed. Path Of Exile 2 had been pencilled in for a 2022 release, but it’s now looking like the sequel could arrive in time for the series’ tenth anniversary. A beta is planned, too, and dates for that will be announced when the game is shown at Exilecon.
Path of Exile 3.20 replaces controversial Archnemesis system
Grinding Gear Games has clarified its new Path of Exile 3.20 balance manifesto, which addresses some of the changes being made in the next major update for the RPG game. Key among them is the decision to introduce new monster mods designed to replace the controversial Path of Exile Archnemesis system that has been frustrating fans through the past couple of seasons. GGG says it aims to create new mods that are clearer, and associated reward systems that avoid the notorious ‘MF culling’ build requirements created by what came to be known as Path of Exile loot goblins.

Fans hope Path of Exile Ruthless ultra-hard mode eases base game grind
As Grinding Gear Games unveils its new Path of Exile Ruthless mode, an optional ultra-hard setting for the RPG game, some fans say they are looking forward to the challenge it provides while others hope that it will free the fantasy game’s base modes of some of the perceived “tedium” and grind of recent seasons. Players have expressed frustration in recent months with the Path of Exile Archnemesis system and the resulting trend of PoE loot goblins that have left players feeling forced into a very all-or-nothing farming style as they search out endgame gear.

Path of Exile ‘loot goblins’ highlight RPG’s magic find woes
Path of Exile ‘loot goblins’ are the talk of the ARPG game’s community right now – a description for players spending hours upon hours farming with minimal rewards in search of one extremely high-payout enemy. Many fans say this phenomenon, which has become the focus of much endgame play in PoE patch 3.19, is emblematic of both big problems with the magic find system and ongoing frustrations about the Path of Exile Archnemesis mods.

Path of Exile Archnemesis system continues to frustrate fans
The Path of Exile Archnemesis system continues to frustrate fans of one of the main Diablo competitors. PoE has long been seen as one of the best RPG games on PC and as a game that gave fans of the genre who felt disappointed by Diablo 3 a new place to call home. However, recent updates to the free PC game such as the disappointing Path of Exile Lake of Kalandra release have left the community in disarray, and continued frustrations arising from the Archnemesis system have even seen some players turn to the Blizzard series they long ago snubbed in search of an alternative.
The Path of Exile Archnemesis challenge league ran from February 4 – May 10 2022, as part of PoE’s patch 3.17 update Siege of the Atlas. Its unique twist was allowing players to build their own boss fights by applying new ‘Archnemesis modifiers’ to them before the fight. These introduced a series of dangerous behaviours and traits to the foes, but rewarded players with a range of valuable items and resources in return.
The league was seen as fairly rewarding, but some of the modifiers could be rather frustrating to deal with. However, as these were under player control it was very much a ‘you made your bed, now lie in it’ situation. This became a more dramatic issue when the next league, Sentinel, began – the Archnemesis modifiers were instead introduced to the pool used by all rare monsters in the game, meaning that players began encountering packs featuring some of the most frustrating variants. However, they weren’t given the previous reward bonuses as compensation for doing so.

Path of Exile devs hope to appease frustrated fans as Diablo 4 looms
Path of Exile developer Grinding Gear Games is attempting to navigate heavy community fallout after a series of recent updates leave fans frustrated with the state of the game. Path of Exile has long been considered one of the best ARPG games on PC since its release in 2013, but several of its more recent patches and seasonal updates have proven unpopular with the fantasy game’s usually dedicated playerbase, leaving GGG searching for a salve for the issues as Blizzard’s Diablo 4 release date looms over the horizon.
The newest Path of Exile expansion, Lake of Kalandra, launched on August 19. It promised a cool new way for players to earn endgame gear by exploring the titular lake, which has the power to reflect entire encounters from elsewhere in Wraeclast. The expansion also looked to offer exciting lore around Kalandra herself, a figure known for being the creator of the Mirror of Kalandra, one of the most powerful Path of Exile currencies – an endgame crafting item with the capability of creating a duplicate of any item it is used on.
However, players found that while the concept for Lake of Kalandra was interesting, the expansion didn’t add much new content and felt rather unrewarding. This lack of hype for the new expansion, explains Path of Exile YouTuber ZiggyD in a video on the topic, meant that players weren’t distracted from previous issues they were already having with the game, such as the Archnemesis system, Harvest crafting, and Tainted fusings. “The Path of Exile playerbase is the most united I’ve ever seen,” says ZiggyD, “unfortunately, it’s over being very unhappy with the current state of the game and developer GGG’s initial response to their complaints.”
