Riot on Project L: “We’re going to understand what the fighting community is looking for”
Project L — the 2 vs 2 fighting game lined up as industry giant Riot Games’ next big release — is still a ways out. There’s no release date yet, only a handful of characters, and via our last major update we know the team have only just locked in the foundational gameplay and have moved onto full-on feature and character creation. The reality of people jumping on stage to play Project L for money is still a distant vision. However, does this mean Riot Games haven’t been setting up the groundwork? No way mate – I certainly didn’t think so.
As such, since I was in Sweden for the LEC Summer Finals where the best European teams were battling it out in top-of-class League of Legends, I thought it best to do some digging. Sitting across from me in a curtained interview room was senior director of esports for the EU Alberto Guerrero, who was the perfect person to question about what their plans were for Riot’s yet-to-be-release fighting game, what they had done in this primordial pre-release stage, and what special stuff they had in mind for the Fighting game community (FGC).
But why should anyone care? Sure Riot Games is working on its fighting game right now, but why does its future esports vision actually matter to those who play fighting games right now? Well, it doesn’t take a fortune teller to predict that Project L will send shockwaves across the genre. It’s free to play, which means it’ll have a strong initial base, and with pre-existing Riot Games fans — and Riot Games money — behind it, how it stands on the big stage will likely influence or outright alter how other developers and publishers approach their own titles.

Brit dad-of-four, 33, fighting for life after hitting head on hotel floor during seizure on last day of Mexico holiday
A BRIT dad is fighting for his life in a coma after hitting his head on a hotel floor during a seizure on the last day of his Mexico holiday.
Dad-of-four Paul McKenna had been due to fly back to the UK with his family on Sunday after a two-week holiday in Cancun when he suddenly fell ill.

The 33-year-old electrician was rushed to hospital with a suspected brain haemorrhage after having a seizure and hitting his head on the floor of his hotel room.
The dad has been moved between three different hospitals in the last two days to access the specialist treatment needed to keep him stable, his family said.
Paul is now reportedly on life support in an induced coma with his wife and children at his bedside.
Pals say his hospital bills are already tens of thousands of pounds and are appealing for help with a fundraiser, which has already hit £25,000.
His family and friends believe he had a seizure after catching a bug on the holiday and taking a turn for the worse.

Pal Joe Snellgrove told the Liverpool Echo: “They think it started from some sort of bug because the family had been ill.
“Then on Sunday, he had a seizure, fell and banged his head. He was then induced into a coma.
“Still there is uncertainty surrounding what has actually happened.”

Joe added: “We’re devastated. He’s a brilliant fella and he’d help everyone, like last year during a storm I had some damage to my house and he came out to help straight away.”
Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has chipped in £5,000 to help Paul.
James Stanley, who launched the fundraiser, said: “Whilst on a family holiday in Mexico with his wife, young children and family, Paul suffered a suspected brain haemorrhage and was rushed to hospital.
“Paul is currently on life support, his condition at present is serious but stable.
“His travel insurance does not cover his current condition so the family have already incurred costs in the tens of thousands for medical care, accommodation and essentials due this happening on the last day of their holiday.
“His close friends and family are trying to support his wife Amy to raise as much as possible in order for them to pay for the highest quality of care possible and to ensure that they can stay with him during this time any rehabilitation that he will require when he comes around.

The family are hoping to raise £100,000 to help dad Paul.

“I want it now!” What do hardcore fighting game players think after hands-on with Street Fighter 6?
VsFighting X, the 10th instalment of the UKs biggest fighting game event made its glamorous return this past weekend in the heart of central Birmingham. Walk past all the construction through the doors of the Millenium Point venue and excited crowds of competitors and spectators dominated the space. However, as brilliant as the tournament itself was, one of the most popular attractions was Street Fighter 6 on the 2nd floor.
With a crowd of eager players larger than even some of the titles with their own dedicated tournament space, four monitors of the version 1.0 build quickly became a hot spot for every attendee. The game, as you may have noticed if you’ve been following it since its announcement, has a lot of hype around it as all mainline Street Fighter titles have had in the past.
While the opinions of many influencers and press outlets are out in the wild — including our own impressions of the game — this was a great opportunity to find out what your typical gamer thinks of the next big thing flying out the doors of Capcom. To find out, I made the journey out to Birmingham to get the consensus.
