Google Drive has suddenly decided to introduce a file cap – but you might never hit it
Google Drive rolled out a hard file limit with no warning
Google has put a hard limit on the number of files Drive users can have in one account, according to a report from Ars Technica. The rollout came without warning and many paying Drive users found themselves suddenly locked out of new file uploads.
As Ars Technica reports, the file limit was not a bug as some Reddit users had suspected. A Google spokesperson confirmed to the publication that the restriction was “a safeguard to prevent misuse of our system in a way that might impact the stability and safety of the system.”
While the surprise rollout that’s been affecting accounts for months sounds scary, it really isn’t. The file limit imposed by Google is up to 5 million. The average user is nowhere near that number in their Drive account, and the company told Ars Technica that “the number of impacted users here is vanishingly small.”
However, the surprise rollout came with no public statement from Google. Ars Technica writes that the file limit has been at play since at least February, with users left in the lurch with no explanation. An especially troubling revelation for those who pay large sums of money for Google Workspace plan packages.
For 30TB of storage with Google One, the company charges a whopping $150/month, and with an “enterprise” plan, Google promises “As much storage as you need.” Needless to say, a hard limit on the number of individual files undermines this claim.
The company added additional nuance, clarifying to Ars Technica that the limit applies to “how many items one user can create in any Drive,” not a “total cap for all files in a drive.”
Google did not immediately respond to Mashable’s request for comment.
Google Drive Has a Hidden File Limit
The issue was flagged by users on Reddit as well as Google’s Issue Tracker and appears to have been put in place around mid-February. The file limit in place puts a hard ceiling on the total number of files stored in Google Drive at five million items. This limit ignores file size and type, and is a simple count of the number of files in your online storage bucket. This also includes items stored in the trash (which is automatically emptied every 30 days). When that limit is reached (or if the account has already exceeded it), Google Drive shows the following message: “This account has exceeded the creation limit of 5 million items. To create more items, move items to the trash and delete them forever.”
One user reports having seven million items in their account prior to the limit being enforced, with their account no longer able to add any new files. Effectively, that user and anyone else in the same situation are locked out of their accounts, with the files stored now in a “read-only” mode. Google appears to have confirmed the limit to some users via support, but has yet to speak out publicly about it.

Finally, there’s a girlfriend simulator that can also file your taxes
This tax season, fall for MSCHF’s dating sim, not tax scams.
On Monday, MSCHF launched a free anime dating game for doing your taxes. From the cheeky creator behind the Big Red Boots, Tax Heaven 3000 is a real, working game that enlists a dating sim named Iris to help you prepare your federal income taxes. “Hi there! Iris here,” she says on the taxheaven3000.com website. “It’s always been a dream of mine to meet that special someone…and file their tax return. Join me and we’ll search for deductions while searching for love!”

Predatory tax filing services are the latest target of MSCHF, an art collective known for creating viral products that offer provocative commentary on late-stage capitalism, fandom, and hype-driven consumer culture. The company has generated media attention for its “Satan Shoes,” custom Nike Air Max sneakers made in collaboration with Lil Nas X that contained a drop of blood, “Eat the Rich Popsicles,” and “Ketchup or Makeup,” packets that either contained ketchup or lip gloss. Now, MSCHF is calling out companies like TurboTax and H&R Block for taking advantage of confused taxpayers.
If you made less than $73,000, it is free to file your taxes in the U.S. But a ProPublica investigation revealed how tax-filing company TurboTax deliberately confuses and misleads customers into paying for their services. TurboTax also lobbies heavily to keep these using these deceptive tactics. As we enter the dreaded tax season, Tax Heaven 3000 is here to remind you that filing your taxes can be free…and sexy.

“TurboTax, per its own internal documents, is built on the ‘Fear Uncertainty and Doubt’ that ordinary people have about their taxes,” says the website. “Against this we pit free software instead built on parasocial desire for intimacy and benign horniness! If TurboTax is Dark UI, TH3K is Pink UI, the nightcore of tax software.”
Tax Heaven 3000 was leaked on Steam last week and subsequently taken down from the popular gaming platform. But Daniel Greenberg, co-founder of MSCHF, said it is now available via itch.io. You can also buy a collector’s edition of the game on the Tax Heaven 3000 website for $90. The purchase includes a physical collector’s box with a CD of the game, an instruction manual, an IRS mailing envelope, and an Iris body pillow (otherwise known as a dakimakura).
Snuggling up to Iris seems like a better investment of your money than paying for service that is technically free. At least she won’t break your heart like the IRS.

Dating sim that helps you file your taxes delisted from Steam for obvious reasons
A dating sim visual novel designed to file your taxes, Tax Heaven 3000, has been removed from Steam, unsurprisingly.
Visual novels are a pretty broad genre, covering a range of topics, sometimes heavy, sometimes light. The general public probably mostly just sees them as dating sims, but most of the time they offer very personal and complex stories. Tax Heaven 3000 appears to not be one of those kinds of visual novels. Instead, it is a game that quite literally helps you file your taxes (if you’re from the US, that is). And to the surprise of no one, it has been removed from Steam.
Tax Heaven 3000 stars Iris (get it?), the typically cute anime woman who helps you to “actually prepare your 2022 federal income tax return,” as noted on the game’s itch.io page, which is still up and running. Looking at the trailer, it has all the callings of the stereotypical dating sim, like going on dates, and sharing your social security number. You know, the usual stuff.
macOS 13.3 Coming Soon With Fix for Network File Sharing
Several users who were affected by the issue have noted that network file sharing is functional again as of the third beta of macOS 13.3 and later, with one user saying that Apple confirmed a fix was implemented. macOS 13.3 is in the final stages of beta testing and is expected to be publicly released as soon as next week.
Users complained about macOS 13.2 breaking network file sharing across the MacRumors Forums, Apple Support Community, Reddit, and Twitter.
File Sharing can be enabled in System Settings → General → Sharing and allows for a Mac’s files to be accessed remotely over a local network. For example, a user may have a Mac mini set up as a server and enable File Sharing on that computer in order to remotely access files from their primary computer, such as a MacBook Pro.
